It looks like he is good at winning headers from the video posted above. That will help improve one of our weaknesses at centerback, which will be critical when we start facing the taller teams from West Asia in WC qualifying next year. For now I would pair him with Juani at centerback. Communication is important at that position and Silva would have an easier time manning the defence if his defensive partner can speak his native language.
Having 2 professional centerbacks that are 6'3' and 6'2" in height should improve our defence immensely. Juani still has a few years left to play even though he is now 34 y/o as centerbacks tend to have longer playing careers than other field players in football. Dooley also played his first game with the US at the age of 30 and kept on playing with the national team until he was 37 y/o and finished his playing career in the MLS at the age of 39.
It seems that our Spanish players have been more successful lately, at helping scout and convince their compatriots to join the Azkals than our English players have, as Silva would be the 4th straight professional Spanish recruit since Angel Guirado joined the team, while only Curt Dizon has been added from England since Gier joined the team in 2009 and Curt who is still very young does not have the professional credentials that our Spaniards have brought with them.

I'm sure I've said it somewhere and I'm sure a few others have mentioned it as well, that Spain is a country where we should be digging deeper to find potential players of Filipino descent! It won't be surprising if there were a few more at least that could be of Filipino descent, half or even a quarter!

brimstone,
Only half Filipinos can be recruited to the Azkals, if we go by what Filipino law would allow when it comes to citizenship(even though FIFA rules might allow players whose grandparents are from that country as well). And I agree with you in hoping that we can find a few more professional players of Filipino descent from Spain, since many of us are of Spanish descent ourselves and have many ties to that country culturally and in terms of religion.

Surely that's wrong! There are WNT players/prospects who are only 1/4 Filipino and have acquired their Filipino passport. I can't exactly name anyone off the top of my head but one that I do know is Natalie Sanderson who is uncapped. She's 1/4 Filipino and got her passport in September 2013.

If we can just look at a loophole here, if FIFA allows a quarter of ancestry to a foreign to be eligible to his desired NT, maybe we can remove that 5 yr residency is get that 1/4 Fil-For is he subjected to naturalization.

If that is the case, then there might be a loophole somewhere in our laws that I don't know of, that might allow this. It would be like how our Danes were able to retain their Danish citizenship while acquiring Philippine citizenship, despite Danish law not allowing dual citizenship by using a loophole in their laws.

More video on Silva:
BTW, I would be surprised if he signs with a UFL team. From what my Romanian friends tell me, they usually pay quite well in the Azerbaijan leagues(financed with oil revenues) and many foreigners including Romanians end up playing there because of this. He would have to accept a discount if he wants to play in the UFL.

My insider said that Alvaro Silva is just one-fourth Filipino but 2 out of 4 of his grandparents were born in the Philippines. . .

My insider said that Alvaro Silva is just one-fourth Filipino but 2 out of 4 of his grandparents were born in the Philippines. . . He would be the first member of the Azkals to not have a parent who is entirely Filipino in that case. That maybe why it took so long for him to obtain his passport.

How is our former captain Aly Borromeo doing? Him and Alvaro could marshall our back line together as well. Both of them have height and are 30 yrs old.
Watcha guys think?

Aly starts for kaya again right? As per Gabe Norwood I think he is not naturalize because in FIBA rules their should be only one naturalize player in a team.

wow..from what I've read..azer & romanian league which he's from seems in a decent level. Which kinda reminded me of germany's division 3.
Great acquisition for the azkals.
BTW, any news on bernat alomar?. We should also go for him coz he will have alot of playing time at 27y.o.

He would have to accept a discount if he wants to play in the UFL. i hope he reconsiders to continue playing in Azerbaijan League or even Other Asian Clubs. I wouldnt want him in the UFL coz playing against more competitive players would keep his skill and stamina in top shape for the Azkals next games like Suzuki Cup. Alvaro wit Juani at CB would be like a WALL haha..and Angel up front . Azkals height got a bit taller haha..

He is currently at a Azerbaijani team Khazar Lankaran FK and last 2013-2014 season, he played 30 games with 2556 playing time.
If his contract with this team is ended, better stay off with Thai team perhaps go back to Spain and play there to maintain fitness but if not, then good for him to stay longer with the team. BTW, he's already with this team for 2 seasons. Maybe he has a long term contract with this team.
