The U-16 team are the third women’s team that the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has sent to an international tournament. Following in the footsteps of the U-14’s successful AFC campaign, and the modest showing of the senior women’s national team at the AFF Women’s Championship earlier this month, the U-16 girls have reached the qualifiers for the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) U-16 Women’s Championship set to take place next year and are halfway through. Marnelli “Let” Dimzon had been tasked to take the helm for the youth team, her first with the U-16, and has been preparing since as early as June. Dimzon flew to different parts of the country holding tryouts and then selected 30 members for an intensive four-week training camp in Clark, Pampanga, that included various tune-up friendlies with UAAP teams (the Far Eastern University, University of the Philippines, De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University) before eventually arriving at the final roster of 20. The sole representative from Mindanao is Rena Clariza Agudolo (Zamboanga del Sur). Three represent Visayas in Mae Jan Tan (Negros Oriental) and Tejanee Marie Isulat and Christine Dale Pañares (both are from Negros Occidental). From Luzon are Marienell Cristobal (Pampanga), Michaela Maligalig (Laguna), with Glynnes Dela Cruz, Stacey Arthur, Andrea Tiongson and Regine Rebosura repping Metro Manila. Cristobal has the special distinction of having played in the U-14 team which took home the AFC silver medal earlier this year, while the other girls have played for U-14 teams in previous years. Coming all the way from North America are Faith Ruetas (Ontario, Canada), Hannah Villasin (New Jersey, USA), Tara Shelton (Washington, USA) with Danezza April Graellos, Denice May Graellos, Maeva Collatos, Erin O’Connor, Caitlin Levasseur, Isabella Mahoney and Gabrielle Breton all hailing from California, USA. With Dimzon as the head coach, her staff consists of Patrice Impelido and Joyce Landagan as the assistant coaches; Kim Versales as the goalkeeper coach; and Eunice Maliuanag as the physical therapist. PFF official Lalaine Sarmiento is with the team as the head of delegation. Since the U-16 team’s arrival in Weifang City last Friday, August 26, the Philippines has posted two big wins. Three days ago there was a particular sense of uncertainty usually reserved for the first match of a tournament. But the sentiment dissolved quickly when Isulat scored early in the 6th minute against India, then it turned to thrill by the time Tiongson added an assurance goal in the 75th to notch the Philippines’ first win. Ruetas, who wore the captain’s armband for the game, made sure to shut out India’s eager attacks, making one big save after another. For the second match yesterday, the girls blitzed their way to a 13-0 rout of Northern Mariana Islands, with Isulat again finding the net after just 22 seconds. She would go on to score three more (13th, 32nd, and 63rd minutes). Graellos (May) overwhelmed the Mariana Islanders when she doubled the Philippine lead in the 2nd minute, but the horror wasn’t over for them when Levassuer tripled it in the 6th. Even defenders got into the scoring frenzy when Collatos added one her own twelve minutes later and Dela Cruz in the 43rd. Together with midfielder Villasin’s 33rd minute goal the halftime score stood at 8-0. The Islanders’ defense faltered again early in the half when Graellos (April) sneaked in a goal just two minutes after restart. Eight minutes later Mahoney brought the score to double figures. The Islanders labored to get the ball away from their half of the field, and in the rare moments that they managed to break through, goalkeeper O’Connor defused all their hope. With ten minutes left in the game, Arthur, who also served as captain, turned heads with a long range cracker. Four minutes later, substitute Rebosura wrapped things up with the last goal. To date, Tejanee Isulat has been named by AFC officials as the Player of the Match for both the India and NMI games. The Philippines currently sit at the top of the table with 6 points and a goal difference advantage of 15. They get a bye on matchday three, then resume play two days later on September 3, Saturday at 4:00 P.M. against the toughest opponent in the group, Korea Republic. The team will end proceedings on September 5 at 11:00 A.M. versus familiar foes Malaysia. Every match in the qualifiers is a crucial one, with only one team progressing from the group to the finals at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship next year. The next fixture against Korea will be a real test for the Philippines U-16 team, but head coach Dimzon is not daunted. “We will do some adjustments in our defending shape and we’ll give individual tasking for some players,” she said. Dimzon will look into the strengths of her rotation adding emphasis on defense, but she assured that the team will not bunker down. “We will still do the same attacking pattern,” she promised. tiebreakertimes.com/tbt/rp-u-16-girls-post-two-big-wins-in-china-for-afc-qualifiers/64962

FULL TIME: Malaysia 0 - 5 #PilipinasU16 (Denice Graellos 7' 78', Tejanee Isulat 51', Caitlin Levasseur 58', Isabella Mahoney 65') The Philippines end their campaign with another win, and a third clean sheet. Denice Graellos has been named PLAYER OF THE MATCH after scoring a brace. Tejanee Isulat was this game's captain and contributed a goal herself which makes her overall scoring tally a team-high 6. Marienell Cristobal started the game which makes her the only player to feature on two female national teams this year, the U-14 and U-16. Her start also means that all players on Coach Let Dimzon's squad were able to cap for the Philippines in this tournament. The #PilipinasU16 end the AFC U-16 Qualifiers with 9 points through 3 wins and 1 loss falling in second place of the group behind Korea Republic, the team they only lost to. Korea, having won their last game over India means they won all their games and top the group with 12 points. This also means that the Koreans are the team that will advance to the #AFCu16WC2017 finals next year.

Philippines U16 girls national team prepares for AFF tournament Once again, Pinay football is set to take on the region's best. The Philippines' Born 2003 girls team is in Palembang, Indonesia for the Asean Football Federation U16 Girls Championship from May 1 to 13. The Pinays are in a five-team round-robin group. After drawing a bye on May 1, the squad takes on Malaysia on May 3, Singapore on May 5, Vietnam on May 7, then Myanmar on May 9. The top two advance to the semis. Coach Marielle Benitez's squad hopes to exceed the feat of last year's U16 team that finished second to Thailand in Laos. The 2017 team was bolstered by six overseas born-and-bred Filipinas. This year's squad features Bella Hosking, a very capable Filipina-Brit centerback living in Thailand, and Isabel Mapanao, a towering, full-blooded Filipina raised in Switzerland. But the rest of the squad is completely home-grown, and culled from a vast pool of players from all over the nation. Benitez and her assistants, Belay Fernando and Elyo Dillera, traipsed all over the country scouting for talent in the Philippine Football Federation's Festivals of Football, or scouting combines held in several provincial areas, including Tarlac, Davao, Iligan, Davao del Norte, San Carlos, and Metro Manila. The staff looked at around 700 players and have whittled the squad down to 22. Former women's national team mentor Buda Bautista will also be a consultant for the team. There are three girls from Dipolog, Sarah Tulabing, France Gayapa, and Bianca Sy. Compostela Valley has one player on the roster, Gean Templaza. Baguio is represented by Lorjane Aludos, a veteran of last year's campaign, Kylie Panagan, and Eunique Bocalan. San Carlos in Negros Occidental has one player in Gen-gen Umbao while Bacolod's offering is the gifted midfielder MJ Villacin. Gretel Tan is the lone player from Davao City. The balance of the team are from the Metro Manila area, like DLSZ's terrific Maria Lazo and Miriam College's Jazzy Borra, who the coaches remark was nothing remarkable when she tried out last year but has blossomed into an international-caliber player since then. This competition was originally slated for June, but the AFF moved it up a month early. That compressed the training schedule greatly, and the staff needed to scramble to sew up the odds and ends of the campaign. The girls have been playing friendlies against several boys teams from Kaya, Football Funatics, Ceres Youth, and Green Archers United to toughen them up for the rigors of international play. While they understandably have had difficulty against male teams, they have played them tough every time. Last Thursday night they also took on a mixed team of DLSU high school and older college girls in a friendly game and impressed many onlookers. The bulk of the squad's training sessions since the second week of April took place in the PFF Artificial Turf Pitch in the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite. “It's wonderful,” said coach Belay Fernando of the ground. “It's much better to train on than grass because of the consistency,” she added. Benitez had other reasons to praise the facility. “Since you are isolated, you can focus, and there are less distractions for the players.” But Benitez also noted that SLLP is still not too far away, usually an hour from Makati or even less. In some of the friendly matches the parents of the Manila-based girls were able to come down to watch. “The pitch is a good way to introduce the kind of play of our national team to new players,” said Benitez, herself a former women's national team standout. “It sets the standard for what a proper training ground should be.” Benitez also notices that even on oppressively hot summer days, a strong breeze blows from the East, cooling down the players. She also says the girls make use of the nearby locker rooms to shower after training. The PFF Artificial Turf Pitch in Carmona measures 105 meters long and 68 meters wide, the preferred dimensions for elite play. The surface has passed the FIFA Quality Pro standard, formerly known as FIFA 2 star. sports.abs-cbn.com/football/news/2018/04/30/ph-u16-girls-national-team-prepares-aff-tournament-40993Any Fil Ams in this team? That is where they get most of their reinforcements abroad normally like most players from the picture above. I wonder if the last minute national team coach change(and resulting roster change) in the US that the PFF pulled off has affected their scouting and recruiting efforts in the US. I still believe that if it weren't for the coaching change at the last minute and several players not being selected or pulling out as a result we had a better chance of qualifing for the World Cup. They basically burned a lot of bridges with that decision with folks who were basically helping them out for free.

03 May 2018 AFF U16 Girls Championship - Philippines 0-2 Malaysia PALEMBANG (3 May 2018) – Vietnam and Malaysia picked up their first win in Group A of the AFF Under-16 Girls’ Championship after two rounds of matches. Vietnam, who were drawn scoreless by Myanmar in their first game, blasted Singapore 4-0 at the Athletic Jaka Baring 1. Across town at the Bumi Sriwijaya Stadium, Malaysia – held to a 3-3 draw by Singapore two days earlier – played a tighter game to beat last year’s finalists Philippines 2-0. “It was a very balanced game,” said Malaysian head coach Justin Ganai afterwards. “The girls played well and the difference today was that we just took our chances well.” The Malaysians, who were eager to shore up their defence after the slump against Singapore, pushed hard at the start and it did not take them long to carve out the lead. Just ten minutes in, Nur Qiasatina Nizam fired in from some 20metres which caught Philippines keeper Isabelle off guard and as she scrambled for the save, Ain Nur Qaseh Azman came in to slot the ball home. Just three minutes later, Malaysia doubled their advantage when Ain Nur picked up the pass from Nur Mecca Hazri to score. The Philippines tried hard to get into the game and where they finished the first half with a cracker from Maria Gloria Lazo that failed to beat Malaysian custodian Nuralyaa Natasha Zukefli. The second half saw both teams pushing in numbers but the Philippines improved their defensive line to prevent Malaysia from adding to the scoreline. For the Malaysians, they were not going to let it slip like they did against Singapore as the first three points gave them a booster ahead of their next match against Myanmar next. “It was an unfortunate loss where the two early goals shook the team,” said Philippines head coach Marielle Benitez. “We managed to keep possession but our finishing was lacking.” www.aseanfootball.org/v3/u16-girls-win-for-malaysia-and-vietnam/
