At the Athletic Jaka Baring 1 Stadium, Vietnam walked away easy 3-0 winners over the Philippines in spite of the hard defensive work the latter put in the first half. Vu Thi Hoa opened account in the 48th minutes as Dang Thanh Thao then added two more goals (51st and 80th minute) for the win. “The rain affected play in the first half. But we recovered in the second half when the rain stopped,” said Vietnam head coach Nguyen Thi Mai Lan. Added Philippines head coach Marielle Benitez: “We started well but we faltered in the second. We failed to make the semi-finals this year but we have picked up some good lessons.” www.aseanfootball.org/v3/u16-girls-myanmar-and-vietnam-vie-to-win-group-a/

The Philippines Girls Under-16 Team clinched their place to the second round of the AFC U16 Women’s Championship 2019 Qualifiers as one of the best second placed teams despite a 1-5 loss to Myanmar, last Sunday 23 September 2018 at the Halchowk Stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal. Mikaela Villacin scored for the Philippines in the 62nd minute. The forward, who hails from Cadiz City, was sent free by a through pass and before slotting it in to the back of the net. The Philippines finished Group E in second place with six points having won their matches over Nepal (4-0) and Malaysia (1-0). Head coach Joyce Landagan and assistant coaches Marielle Benitez and Eleonora Dillera were over the moon after securing qualification to the second round. The Philippines is one of the three best second placed teams at the end of the group stage and will join China PR, Laos, IR Iran, Australia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Vietnam in the next round. “We’re very happy that we qualified, it was a surreal feeling especially as Myanmar and Malaysia were the favorites to go through, but the players showed heart and worked their way to win their matches,” said Landagan. “It’s fulfilling and I’m happy because in the span of two weeks, we were successful in molding them into a team, a sisterhood and that was the deciding factor on the pitch.” “We’re really proud of how this team performed in the tournament,” said Benitez, who served as head coach in the AFF U16 Girls’ Championship 2018 last May. “We’re very happy that we made it through to the next round and are already excited to continue our preparation for next year.” “Youth football is going in the right direction,” added Dillera. “We are so proud of what the team has achieved despite the obstacles. I think it is a well deserved win.” PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes congratulated the team on a successful qualifying campaign in Nepal. “We congratulate the Philippines Girls Under-16 Team for qualifying to the second round of the AFC U16 Women’s Championship 2019 Qualifiers as one of the best second placed teams,” said Gastanes. “The team showed grit, determination, and heart in all of their matches. We wish them the best of luck as they continue on to the next round.” The second round of the qualifiers will be held on 23 February until 3 March 2019. The teams will be grouped into two groups of four with the group winners and runners up qualifying to the final round on September 2019. pff.org.ph/2018/09/24/philippines-u16-girls-through-to-the-second-round-of-the-afc-u16-womens-championship-qualifiers-2019/

Congratulations to the young Malditas. But watching their last game against MYA, it appears (just as in the senior Malditas) that not much will be expected from them come the second round as they still seem to be miles behind MYA plus VIE and THA. I would place the Malditas at 4th in the SEA region at all levels (youth to seniors) thus far.
We had a very strong youth Malditas squad not too long ago but that's because of the heavy filam connections. I am not sure if they will have some additional reinforcements come the second window where the teams are stronger.

The eight teams in the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2019 Qualifiers Round 2 have identified their group opponents following the official draw ceremony at the AFC House on Wednesday. Australia, one of the two teams with a perfect record from Round 1, were drawn into Group A and will face Vietnam, Islamic Republic of Iran and host nation Laos, who were unbeaten in the first round of the qualifying campaign. Bangladesh, Philippines and China PR will travel to Myanmar for their Group B fixtures. Round 2 of the Qualifiers will be played on February 27 to March 3, 2019, where the eight teams will be divided into two groups of four, with the group winners and runners-up from the respective groups advancing to the Finals. The four teams will then join the top three teams from the 2017 edition - DPR Korea, Korea Republic, and Japan - along with host of the 2019 Finals, Thailand, next September.

Will the team be reinforced by pinays based abroad come the second round of Qualifiers? If they retain the present line-up, it would appear that China and MYA (they are the hosts and they won 7-1 over PHI in the 1st round) will be favored to progress from our group. However, if we get some key additions, then we may just ease out MYA for the second spot in the group.

Rush preparations as usual. Although these girls are at least performing better than the boys.

The PWNT U17 team were drawn into Grp G in the AFC U17 2024 Championships Qualifiers alongside Lebanon and Guam. The U17 girls were drawn from Pot 1. Much better draw than that of the U20 girls who were drawn from Pot 4 because they did not participate in the last edition. In their previous outing the Philippines U17 Women’s National Team made it to the second round of the qualifiers last February 2019 and missed out on a spot in the final round.

In a surprising development PFF Sec Gen Gastanes just announced that women's coach Alen Stajcic has taken over coaching the U17 girl's team and women's assistant coach Nahuel Arrarte is taking on the U20 WNT in addition to their PWNT duties. Both coaches must have liked the level of talent they saw during the tryouts in California (which I heard was pretty high) in order to accept those jobs in addition to the PWNT.
Coach Allen Stajcic in particular has a very good reputation developing young players for the Australian girl's teams in the past before becoming the Australian head women's coach so this should benefit the Philippines too. He also has an easier job getting past the first round of the AFC qualifiers as the top seed and strongest team in their group.
Coach Arrarte has the tougher job though getting past the first round of the AFC qualifiers in March. Because the Philippines did not participate in the previous edition of the AFC U20 qualifers they were unranked and were grouped with a traditionally strong team (China) in the first round this time around. Since only one team from the group gets to advance, the Philippine U20 team will have no choice but to win against China in their very first game in the group to advance to the 2nd round of the U20 AFC qualifiers.
Both coaches will next head to the Philippines to administer the tryouts for U20 and U17 players there as well next week.

I am quite impressed that current members of the US youth national team pools have joined the Philippine U17/U20 tryouts in California, one of whom(Ava Harrison) last year played and started for the US in the U15 Concacaf Championship which the US won as well as in the Euro tour where she scored a goal against the Germany girls U15NT and provided 2 assists against the Netherlands girls U15NT. Another(Grace Thao) was captain of the US U15 and U16 National Futsal teams and has been part of USNT soccer youth training camps for the past 4 years winning the Golden Boot and Golden Ball Awards at the USL Academy Cup in 2021. Ava Harrison's sister Mia Harrison also attended the U17 tryouts. This also opens the door to their elder sister Nya Harrison who plays for NCAA Division I powerhouse Stanford U to join the senior team.

Markey also played for the U20 last month and was a late confirmation. The lone Fil Aussie Isabella Preston was previously called up to the Matildas U17 training camp last February but was absent in later camps. Isabella Preston from what I have seen from pics and reels(jersey #5) will be the tallest player on the team which is advantageous in her favored position at forward.
