Azkals have less than two weeks to prepare for World Cup qualifiers R By Karlo Sacamos THE Philippine men’s football team will try to make do with the little preparation time it has ahead of the start of the Fifa World Cup Qualifiers in the middle of next month. Players still have club commitments until the end of the month, and coach Thomas Dooley has set a local training camp starting June 1, giving him less than two weeks to whip his wards into shape for their major tournament of the year. “What can we do? We just have to deal with what we get and have a short window where we have to work with and do as much as we can,” the Azkals coach said on Friday. Dooley admitted he would have wanted to have more time with his players, most plying their trade in the United Football League. “It’s (training time) never enough,” he said ahead of the Azkals’ opener of the first-round qualifying for the world’s showpiece event on June 11 against Bahrain at the Philippine Stadium. “If I could have them for two months or the whole year, I would.” “But I’m not complaining,” the German-American mentor was quick to add. “I’m just saying it’s kind of hard. In that time, you can only do so much.” The last time the Azkals linked up was in a training camp in Bahrain last March. The late availability of the national booters has also forced the Philippine Football Federation to scrap plans of a friendly against an available footballing neighbor. The PFF was eyeing a friendly against Malaysia on June 31. One thing going for the Azkals is the return of star midfielder Stephan Schrock and striker Javier Patiño as well as the anticipated arrival of new acquisitions in Iain Ramsay, Stephen Palla, Luke Woodland, and Kevin Ingreso. Dooley said the overseas-based standouts, including Jerry Lucena, are set to arrive in the first week of June, while Palla is expected to arrive later as the Filipino-Austrian defender is getting married on June 6. “The quality of players you have plus the preparation you can do equals the success that you can have,” Dooley said. So you cannot say you want to win the World Cup and we don’t train together. Everything has to work together.” “I will try to work with the players as much as possible that they get as much information as possible about the opponent, that they have confidence,” the no-nonsense coach said. “But everybody should bring one-hundred percent.” Read more at www.spin.ph/football/azkals/news/thomas-dooley-preparations-world-cup-qualifiers-bahrain-training-camp-no-friendly-football#Li5o1avDuy1GEAYu.99

4 newcomers reinforce Phl Azkals by Olmin Leyba MANILA, Philippines - New recruits will beef up the Philippine Azkals for their bid in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers beginning next month. Azkals coach Thomas Dooley said Ian Ramsey, Stephen Palla, Kevin Ingreso, and Luke Woodland, along with comebacking Stephan Schrock and Javier Patiño, will start arriving June 1 for Phl XI’s training camp. The Azkals will host Bahrain on June 11 at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan to commence their campaign in the home-and-away, double round-robin Group H preliminaries. Five days later, they will play Yemen in an away game to be staged in Doha, Qatar. “We’ll have Schrock and Ian Ramsey, who are quick, good shots, and with good dribbling. That’s what we need on the wing. Up front, (there’s) Javier. We need somebody who can score with one touch. In the midfield, we got Palla, who is experienced and can bring something on the right side. Like Ramsey, he plays leftback but is a forward with a good offensive mind, so that’s perfect,” said Dooley. “We have young guys like Ingreso and Woodland from good European backgrounds who are coming over and we’ll see how they play,” he added. Dooley has less than two weeks to whip the holdovers and the new recruits into shape for the first two matches. “Is it enough (training period)? I’m always positive, yeah. I will try to work with the players as much as possible, to give them as much information about the opponents and confidence (to go up against the rivals). If everybody brings 100 percent, we’ll have a chance,” he said. The Azkals face tall odds against groupmates Bahrain, Yemen, North Korea and Uzbekistan in the second round of the qualifiers. “We have a really tough group. We’re totally the underdogs and it would be very difficult. With the team we have, there’s something positive but again we have to be on our toes, we have to perform 100 percent,” said the former US World Cup team captain. m.philstar.com/314195/show/a404acdade9819bfd2ccfb1b6dca8dca/?

Azkals Schrock, Patiño returning By Peter Atencio | May. 25, 2015 at 12:01am THE Philippine Azkals national football team is getting ready for the return of star midfielder Stephan Schrock and striker Javier Patiño. The Azkals, making do with the little preparation they have, will have the two around when they start practice the first week of June. Schrock and Patino are expected to be around, just in time for the start of the Fifa World Cup Qualifiers in the middle of next month. “We’re waiting for our first sessions in June. We have new players. We have Schrock coming back and there’s Patino,” said Azkals coach Thomas Dooley. The two are among the many players who still have club commitments until the end of the month. When they arrive, Dooley said local training camp will be organized June 1. The late availability of players for the national squad has forced the Philippine Football Federation to scrap plans of a friendly against an available footballing neighbor. Dooley said they are also waiting for the arrival of new acquisitions Iain Ramsay, Stephen Palla, Luke Woodland and Kevin Ingreso. Overseas-based bets, including Jerry Lucena, are set to arrive in the first week of June. Palla is expected to arrive at a later date because the Filipino-Austrian defender is getting married on June 6. manilastandardtoday.com/2015/05/25/azkals-schrock-pati-o-returning/

Notable absentees:
James Younghusband Roland Muller Alvaro Silva Mike Ott
I hope they get Chris Greatwich as he is good with doing chemistry, most especially with the English boys and new players. Excited to see how our midfield plays now that we have a stable Central Defensive Mid with Ott and Jerry Lucena. Where will coach Dooley put a Stephan Schrock and a Stephan Palla? This will be very exciting:
If were going to play an agressive attacking we'll put Patino and PYH upfront, supported by a Stephan Schrock at Attacking Mid / (probably) with Iain Ramsay playing the RW. We might see Stephan Palla playing the LW, that would bring Ott and Steuble at DM. Then well see a trio of An experience defenders in Lucena / Gier / Guirado. Note that in our mid, well have utility players that can play both offense and defense, meaning can do counter attacks, you have a Schrock, Steuble and Lucena. Well see Neil regaining his no 1 spot, and man, I'll probably see a fired up Neil trying to convince the Coach who is the number 1 GK. This will be exciting times for Phil Football guys! Please share your thoughts guys!

I'm little concerned about the age of the CB. but Italy won world cup with 2 above 35 CB. haha. Alvaro silva is a good addition but coach decision yan eh. Fantasy line up
ETHERIDGE ROTA GIER GUIRADO SATO (Im sticking with the backline that made it up to AFC Challenge cup) Lucena (the only reliable anchor of the team ?) Woodland SCHROCK ( If Woodland is as as advertised central midfield free roaming si schrock ?) REICHELT YOUNGHUSBAND Ramsay (I like to put steuble but medjo schrocky ang Ramsay) Patino (if he can connect well , he's one of the most dangerous strikers around.

Coach TD knows best for this team but im wondering why no muller on the team? Choosing Daniels and Villanueva over JYH and OJ? Nevertheless, this is a dream team for me and im excited to watch the first game! Another concern is the ticket prices, a bit expensive specially if we want to fill PSS

IMHO I think OJ is better choice than Misagh who hasn't improved given his vast exposure for almost 4yrs. OJ is more threathening he even scored a screamer (the winning lone goal that is) on an int'l friendly vs Myanmar 2yrs ago. He can add more offensive depth from the bench as Reichelt had just recovered from injury. And fitness issue aside il pick James over Dennis Villanueva whos hasn't proved anything yet. The kid is not even a major factor for the Global FC campaign though im not closely following the UFL and Dooley(or Palami? Just kidding) have seen something special in him. But he wasn't even tested yet in an international friendly or a minor tournament like the Peace Cup. With James' height and experience and still in the prime of his career he can give depth to our ageing defense. Rota can move to CB as backup for Gier who recently been a step slower as seen from last year's Suzuki Cup and also to a sometimes struggling youngster Amani. Our group is notches higher than what we're used to compete with in Suzuki Cup and Challenge Cup. They are bigger, faster and more technically sound. About the GK no big deal if Muller cant make it maybe he has health or team issues. I think its high time for Neil to step up as Muller always gets to start but with the recent game versus Bahrain he conceded 2 consecutive goals though he had a great game against the same squad in nil-nil draw 2yrs ago. Neil had his share of penalty saves from stronger teams. A double save against Kuwait (PK taken by top scorer Bader al Mutwa) in a friendly 3yrs ago and another double save from a PK against Hongkong in another friendly 2yrs ago. He also saved a PK from North Korea's top scorer Pak Nam Chol in the 1st game of 2012 AFC Challenge Cup. They can use the youger players with potential like Villanueva and even OJ who wasnt called up to the senior team for the U23 team competing in SEA Games instead. Just my 2cents.

with this lineup, i think Coach TD is on the attacking mode hehehe but with the quality of players he dropped he must make sure Team chemistry will be up and running in a few weeks.. i believe heheheheh

My guess is he'll maximize the bench a lot considering you have quality players from the bench. But based on my experience, lets temper our expectation first on the 4 new guys. Coming from season ending games, I think, theyll have fitness issues.
We still might see the same starting eleven with the inclusion of Schrock, Patino and Etheridge. I dont have any idea yet on the game of Ingreso and Woodland on whether how they will fit in with the team. 2 weeks seems to be a very short time to prepare for a World Cup Qualifier. But for as long as you have players playing on another level like Patino, Schrock, Ramsay and Palla, I think we'll do good. Hopefully we'll beat Bahrain on the first leg and Yemen on the 16th. This will definitely give our boys the needed confidence.
STRATEGY:
For the past year, it has been the midfield who has contributed in our offense and defense. With coach TD saying that he'll put Palla on the mid, kinda tells me we'll do a lot of Attacking and Pressing. Ramsay will probably own that RW with Reichelt coming off the bench to provide energy. The partnership of Ott and Lucena or probably Steuble at the central mid. This will probably the first time we'll see 2 Strikers upfront. Before we only do a Single Striker with an Attacking Mid, but because of our depth and quality at Mid, we'll probably see our attacking potential just like how we play against Cambodia and Turkmenistan 2 yrs ago. Schrock/Lucena/JYH/De Jong supplying PYH and Patino goalscoring passes. As for the defense, CBs will be again entrusted to our 2 pillars on defense, plus our wingbacks, on top of them an Ott or Lucena.
A goal-hungry PYH means a very dangerous Patino. The more PYH attracts defenders, the more opportunity Patino will get. I hope their partnership upfront will give us more goals.

I may not understand the inclusion of Villanueva and Daniels over the likes of JYH and OJ and even Mike Ott or the non-inclusion of Alvaro Silva, but I trust the coach. He must be cooking something new here especially with the addition of the 4 new players..

Same here. Villanueva and Daniels are head-scratchers. If you're following the current UFL campaign, plenty of other players that are doing better than them. But hey, benefit of the doubt.
