Timor Leste started their campaign in the AFF Vietcombank Under-19 Championship on the right note when they edged the Philippines 2-1 in the opening game of Group A here this afternoon at the Hang Day Stadium. Midfielder G. Monteiro gave Timor the best of start when he fired in a rebound after just ten minutes before striker H. Wilson added the second goal of the game in the 37th minute. “It was good to pick up the full points from the first game but there’s still a lot of work to be done,” said Timor Leste coach Shigeo Yamazaki after the match. “We have to improve in the midfield if we want to make the next round.” The Philippines were a little slow off the block and by the time the two Timor goals were scored, they finally sprang into action after the breather. Mark Winhoffer was a handful each time he goes forward and after some persistence, the Philippines finally pulled a goal back in the 75th minute through Jordan Jarvis from the edge of the Timor box. “We recovered a little late in the second half although generally we played well in spite of some mistakes here and there,” said Philippines coach Dan Padernal. www.aseanfootball.org/v2/2016/09/aff-vietcombank-u19-timor-start-well/

11 May 2017 Local talents impress nat’l men’s U19 coach By JACK BIANTAN NATIONAL U19 football coach Mari Aberasturi was impressed by the talents of local footballers in Northern Mindanao, even as he recommends more competitive matches for them to improve. Aberasturi, also the head coach of the National University football program, conducted trials for the national men’s U19 football team at the West Rdige Sports Park in Barangay Carmen, Cagayan de Oro. Some 61 players from Cagayan de Oro, Lanao del Sur, Bukidnon, Butuan, and Zamboanga showed up for the trials conducted with the help of Mindanao’s top football coach Percy Guarin. “Certainly Northern Mindanao is a rich source of football talents. I have identified many players who could play for the national team,” he said. Aberasturi, however, refused to name them yet as he still has to conduct trials in Davao City on Thursday, May 11. He also scheduled trials in Cebu, Bacolod, Luzon and Metro Manila. The national coach said that for players to improve their skills and competitiveness, they would need at least 40 matches a year. “That is why I am pushing for local clubs or FA’s (f ootball associations) to organize an eleven-a-side competition for teams from Northern Mindanao to keep players in shape and for them to learn and improve so that they can play professional football in the Philippines Football League (PFL) someday,” he said. Local FA Mocagesco president Percy Guarin is initially talking to several clubs from Butuan, Iligan, Valencia, Malaybalay and Cagayan de Oro to make this tournament happens. Aberasturi, an Asian Football Confedaration Class A coach, also said that these players who showed up for the trials are the future of Philippine football. “Let’s see in less than five years now, some of them will be playing in the PFL already or in the national team. It will only depend on how much hard work will they do to improve themselves,” he added. Aberasturi has eyed at least five players who can play in the national U19 from the Cagayan de Oro trials but refused to name them. He will select 35 players from Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Bacolod, Cebu, Luzon, and Metro Manila trials. The 35 players will then join the training pool which will hold camp before they will be trimmed down to 24 players for the AFF U18 2017 Championship on September 4 to 18 in Myanmar and the AFC U19 Championship 2018 qualifiers set on November 4to 8 in Cambodia. Read before the game that Coach Mari Aberasturi knows only one style, counterattacking style using long balls. Sure enough that was the system used while Brunei kept the ball on the ground. It is confusing to the players if one national youth team plays a certain style while others play a different style. The PFF should be more consistent and adopt only one system that works best with our physique and stature. That way the players develop playing a certain way all the way from the youngest national team to the senior men's team.

U19 NATIONAL TEAM PREPARES FOR TOUGH AFF TOURNAMENT Once again, some of the Philippines’ finest young footballers will be tested in the crucible of international competition. The Philippines U19 men’s national football team is taking on South East Asia’s best in the ASEAN Football Federation U19 men’s championship this July in the towns of Gresik and Sidoarjo near Surabaya, Indonesia. The Pinoys are bracketed in Group A, along with five other teams. The Philippines begin their campaign against Singapore on July 1. Two days later they face Vietnam. Then on the 5th the Philippines tangles with Indonesia. July 7 will see the boys against Thailand, with the last group match on July 9 versus Laos. Reiji Hirata from Japan is the head coach, filling in for Nhiboy Pedimonte who suffered an injury in a friendly football tournament and is unable to lead the team. The youth football consultant is assisted by former national team players Roxy Dorlas and Timo Orcullo. The goalkeeper coach is Anton Albao and also helping out the side is Laguna FA’s Kit Salanguit. No doubt there is true world-class quality in a side selected from all over the Philippines. UAAP Rookie Of The Year Fidel Tacardon, a Claretian who helped UP win the title this year, will be a handful in attack. Alongside him will be Gio Pabualan from Bukidnon. The FEU juniors standout scored a remarkable 35-yard goal in the UAAP Juniors final as the Tams beat DLS-Z in the final. Pabualan, who will begin his collegiate career next year, is also a gifted free-kick taker. Another player to watch out for is JR Suba from San Beda high school. The Tarlac native is a prolific goalscorer who helped lead the Lions to the NCAA juniors title over La Salle Greenhills. Suba also won the Golden Boot award in the Palarong Pambansa in Vigan, representing CALABARZON. There are a pair of Barotacnons flying the flag for the province of Iloilo. Martini Rey, a tall and skilled central midfielder is highly regarded, while Jed Bode was part of the runner-up squad in the UAAP Juniors for DLSZ. read more about it here: bobguerreroph.wordpress.com/2018/06/28/u19-national-team-prepares-for-tough-aff-tournament/
