PH Azkals open World Cup qualifying campaign with impressive 2-1 win over Bahrain Posted by: Karlo Sacamos | June 11, 2015 10:07 pm 2 0 0 0 0 image: contents.spin.ph/image/phil-younghusband-bahrain-campos.jpgPhil Younghusband made the opening goal for the Azkals with a cross. Jaime Campos BOCAUE, Bulacan – This Azkals team is for real. Fielding what is regarded as the strongest squad ever assembled, the Philippine men’s football lived up to the hype as it stunned a fancied Bahrain side, 2-0, for an auspicious start to its Fifa World Cup Qualifiers campaign on Thursday night at the Philippine Stadium. The Azkals buckled down defensively to hold the Bahrainis scoreless in the first half, before turning up their offense behind goals by Misagh Bahadoran and Javier Patiño early in the second half to score the shutout victory before a compact, but loud partisan crowd at the 20,000-seat venue. New recruits Stephan Palla and Iain Ramsay were also good as advertised, Phil Younghusband thrived in a midfield role, while returnee Neil Etheridge shone as the last line of defense that not even a late goal by the Bahrainis could dampen the win. “It was team effort today,” Azkals coach Thomas Dooley said. “I’m very happy of the result. We worked so hard and nobody had a bad day.” It was a remarkable result for the Filipino booters, who the Bahrainis had mastered in their previous meetings, the most recent a 2-1 decision in their friendly last March in the Middle East country. “I was always saying that somehow we will pull off surprises in this round and I’m happy that we pulled off one tonight,” said team manager Dan Palami, whose 137th-ranked squad is placed 31 spots below Bahrain in the world rankings. The Azkals have little time to rest as they fly to Qatar on Friday ahead of face their next match in Group H against Yemen on June 16 at the Qatar Sports Club in Doha. One dampener was an early injury to Stephan Schrock as the midfield dynamo came off in the 23rd minute to be replaced by Bahadoran, who repaid Dooley’s faith. The Filipino-Iranian winger provided the spark off the bench five minutes into the second half when he flicked a cross from Younghusband. Nine minutes later, Patiño struck off the rebound from a shot off a left-side corner as the Azkals held the fort from there until Bahrain sneaked in an inconsequential goal four minutes into stoppage time by Abdulwahab Al Malood. image: contents.spin.ph/image/dooley-thomas-jascano.jpgRead more at m.spin.ph/sports/football/news/world-cup-qualifiers-bahrain-misagh-bahadoran-javier-pati#YdVO8GLHrVSK8EGo.99

Just got home from the Philippine Sports Stadium. I had a great time! I have to say, I loved the new venue. There was a disconnect from the real world, in a way, with it being so far. Like I had traveled to Azkalsland. There's nothing like emerging from the interior tunnels into the stands of that place. It seemed modern, immaculately clean, and filled me with pride. Like, finally, we're a footballing nation. The acoustics were much better than RMS, as expected. You could hear the Ultras Filipinas from their spot behind one of the goals quite well without much sonic delay. They even got everyone to clap in unison early on. That was until those blasted drums suddenly boomed everyone senseless. I don't know what faction of booster squad they were but their drums drowned out even their own cheers. It was a shame, really, because it derailed any build-up of chants from the Kaholeros and Ultras Filipinas, especially now that they have a stadium with decent acoustics to work with. Nevertheless, the six thousand who were there were obviously avid fans. People were wearing Philippine kit shirts, parents brought their kids, and yes, Kris Aquino was there with Bimby and she had a grand entrance with her enormous entourage of bodyguards. Still, bless their hearts, they came in Philippine LGR kits. As for the team, to be honest, they frustrated me. At least to me, especially in the first half, the lack of practice time together was very evident. Bahrain seemed far more confident early on. But once the second half rolled along it was becoming more and more clear that the individual talent the Azkals had would prevail over a quickly tiring Bahrain. And that one Bahrain player who faked being hit in the face by Patiño quickly rued his antics as his team had to defend a man down due to his being put aside to be "treated". It was fitting that Javier scored at that point. Toward the end it was clear the Philippines just wanted to maintain possession and run the clock and Bahrain weren't really pressing anymore. But Steuble saw an opening and made a run to the goal but lost possession and Bahrain made a quick counter against a complacent defense and scored. Well, it was still a great night. I would make the trip again in the next home game, this time maybe get there earlier to have time to hang out around the merchandise and concessionaire tents set up outside the stadium. I didn't get to see them this time.

About attendance, it will be a few years before that highway that makes the iglesia compound closer comes to fruition. Also I doubt we will have any problems regarding attendance once the UP Azkals stadium is built. The location of the arena really limited attendance to be honest. That is a lame excuse by world standards. It is common in other countries for fans to drive for hours to reach away games. I have done the same(up to 6 hours). There is just a lack of passion for the game in the Metro Manila region. PSS is only 35 kms north of Manila. I have drive hundreds of miles.

I was wrong with my pre-game prediction that the match will result in a draw... The Azkals has delivered beyond my expectations.... Many people didn't realized how big, how massive this win are... For me this is greatest conquest so far... They did it against a team which nearly qualify in 2006 World Cup finals, against a team which is a perennial Asian Cup participant, against a team which is more than 30 places higher FIFA ranking than them..:: this is the first time i forecasted unfavourably for Azkals, and it went and came out good for PHilippines ... So next game I will be rooting for Yemen

IMO,Its was a massive win for the Azkals!!!Sarap sa mata panoorin. Was expecting same old team that defends and try to counter or hold the ball but no results in the final third but they prove me wrong. It maybe not the perfect game but there is a big improvement especially sa depensa.Neil is very shaky ,parang d ako confident sa kanya but more games for him Im sure he will be ok.Back 3(Lucena,Gier,Sato)Medyo kakabahan ka but they defended well,Sato is the best among the 3.(Steuble,Palla,Ott,PYH)Solid for this 4,I like PYH game mala Cesc Fabregas ang dating.Wingers(Ramsay and Bahadoran)Caused problems to the opponent.Misagh stepped up for Schrock with a nice goal.Well Patino is Patino.Lead the line very well and scored a goal.Clap3x para sa coaching staff at kay coach Dooley with a limited time to prepare para mas ready pa tayu compared to Bahrain.Very nice game to start the World cup qualifiers.Nainjured nga lang c Schrock, hopefully its just minor injury.Well lets see against Yemen. Hopefully more fans will watch in our next home match.Let's Go Azkals!

In this game you can see the effect that Dooley has on the team, playing a structured organized system, passing the ball around and players helping out on defence. Even Misagh has learned to curb his ball hogging ways and now plays team ball. It was too bad that Schrock got injured and Woodland was unable to play, but all that means is that we haven't seen the best that this team can offer. I am looking forward to what the future holds with them and other players in the lineup and with more time to get used to each other's play.

Watching the highlights. The 2nd goal should be Misagh's brace. I thought it was Misagh's brace too with respect to where i was seated. But didn't care too much though i just jumped the hell out of it, it was awesome!
