They're currently in their slump. Singaporean football is in its generational sorry state. Gone are the days when there's an Aleksandar Duric and a successful league to get strength from. Six years ago, they were often able to score against post-2010 ASEAN minnows at least 3 goals to nil even in youth levels. We have to understand that much of their successes in the AFF Suzuki Cup were in part because of naturalized players. Naturalized players like Duric, Casmir, Qiu Li, Fahruddin etc delivered for Singapore until 2012. Of that batch Bennett remains and still there are foreigners and foreign-born being chosen to enter their NT. Lately, FAS has been mulling on giving caps to Song Ui-yong (Korean) and Sirina Camara (French) of Home United and Canadian Jordan Webb (Tampines). They've also tapped several heritage players like Chris Van Huizen and Ben Davis a young midfielder who plays for Fulham. But despite fresh talents, there has been no breakout star(s) still. No Duric to save those winnable games. The team plays too much defense (they conceded 9 goals, the second least in their group). Veterans Shahril Ishak and Khairul Amri, two of the remaining offensive players of their last three AFF Suzuki Cup campaign are in the twilight of their careers. It also doesn't help that their domestic league isn't doing well. Malaysia, on the other hand has all the players and the prowess but has been suffering from management issues. Since the Crown Prince of Johor took over FAM, the NT has still yet to record a win. Add to that, there are clubs vs NT issues and there has been complaints that FAM is giving more call ups to players of Johor Darul Tazim (which is owned by the Crown Prince himself). In the qualifiers, Malaysia was in a relatively strong group with North Korea, Lebanon, and Hong Kong. Malaysia was good attacking-wise having several of the quickest wide players in SEA. They scored in every match (except in the away-game versus Hong Kong). Defensively they were dismal, letting in 15 goals, the second worst performance of an ASEAN team in the qualifiers (Cambodia conceded two more). Their solitary point came from a draw against Hong Kong. To be fair, there were good moments in the home-and-away fair against Lebanon but strangely, Malaysian defense often conceded in extra time. ^ thanks for the answer bro btw, was the suspension of indonesia fortuitous for us or their presence wouldn't really matter to our campaign? There's maybe a 1 in 5 chance that Indonesia could have landed in our group if they were not suspended prior. But I think we can beat them. Actually, we're a bit lucky in the draw. Imagine if we were grouped with Lebanon, North Korea, and Hong Kong.

hopefully the luck continuous to the AFC Asian Cup 2019 draw: a grouping with the Host, Kyrgyzstan or Palestine, India or Vietnam would be a very good draw...

My thoughts in this:
1. First, I want to congratulate the team for this big achievement for PHL Football. With this win, this will help bring back the interest of Filipinos in the sport.
2. During the game, there are more sponsors than their games before. Hope there will be more corporate assistance and sponsorships to the team and to the PHL Football.
3. Now that we have a big task ahead, expect for a crucial decision on the Azkals regarding Coach Dooley's contract, friendly matches and more.
4. For the long run, we need to step up our grassroots program. With this, this will help ignite more people to play the game. Azkals players will soon hang up their boots but I hope our next generation of players will be at par or above par of our recent players. I hope we won't go the situation of Malaysian and Singapore Football today.
5. 2018 could be a year for PHL Football. Remember 2018 is Year of the Dog and you know our team's moniker.
6. I really hope we'll have a good year in PHL football considering there is AFF Suzuki Cup this year. I hope they'll erase and turn the tables from the 2016 edition. The Suzuki Cup is also a great preparation for Asian Cup.

I like TD and we should thank him for all the Azkals achievements during his tenure. Thanks TD!!!
But I believe now is the right time for another coach of a higher calibre with more experience. This is to enrich the team with new insights, tactics, etc in addition to the attitude, tactics, etc. that TD brought to the team. If Dooley stays, maybe other teams can easily decipher our tactics by just going through all the games coached by TD during the past 4 years. Hopefully, PFF has enough funds to do this. If PFF does not have funds to hire a coach with significantly higher calibre, we'd better keep TD than just experiment with someone of similar calibre. The Suzuki Cup would be a good preparation with this new coach before the Asian Cup.

Congratulations Azkals!
Another milestone. They just keep coming and it's good to see them coming.
Saw the highlights. My first impression is that I've seen this team better before in organization and passing. At least there's some consistency in that the level of play doesn't drop off dramatically from game to game.
Looking forward to seeing them play against the big boys in Asia. Time to once again put on that Azkal mentality and fight their way into relevance against all the pedigree and history of the other Asia teams.
Congratulations! Enjoy the win. Relish the moment.

Just wondering why Patino was not fielded in both the Fiji tune up and the Tajikistan game. In both games, the team needs a creative and reliable striker and Bahadoran is far from that. In both cases, Misagh started in the game leaving Patino on the bench. Was it a case of match fitness or something else? I am just concerned that if Dooley continue to set aside Patino, our most reliable and experienced striker might eventually loose interest and quit the team similar to shrock and Cagara.
