Okay, folks. Let the deliberations begin. I say the Azkals need a change in coach. Dooley has been good and he has delivered the team to one of the major goals -- participation in the Asian Cup. Let him end his stay on a high note. During his tenure there have been ups and downs. For the most part he achieved expectations. Definitely a huge upgrade from the previous coach Weiss.
If his contract is not extended, any names out there?
Greatwich? Not enough experience.
McMenemy? No. I have fond memories of 2010, but the team needs someone more high profile.
Wenger? High profile, but even if he leaves Arsenal it won't be until the end of the Premiership season. Not available.
Maybe reach out to the DFB again?
Maybe the FA can help out by funding a coach?

For me,I hope the next coach should have "World Cup" experience. Someone who has been at helm with senior national team/s who has been at the world cup. Not necessarily German.

How about that Thailand NT coach Winfried Schäfer? But he is with Esteghlal at the moment and I am not sure if he is significantly of a higher calibre than Dooley.
If PFF hires a new one, should be of much higher calibre than Dooley. Otherwise, let's stick with TD as he has enormous experience playing at the top level, both club and country. I also like how TD keeps on giving opportunities to much younger and upcoming players and he is not afraid of inserting them in the lineup even in critical matches if he thinks the player is the right one (e.g. Amani during the 2014 Challenge Cup). I also like how he seems not tolerating prima donna mentality - focusing on the team as a whole and not giving too much freedom/privilege or special treatment to star players.

Have you lost your mind? Make the Asian Cup, and the reward is to get sacked? Dooley has done more for the Azkals than any Gaffer in history. Clubs are taking the Azkals SERIOUSLY now. There was a time when a match against the Philippines was not if the Azkals lost, but by how much they lost by. You need to understand that the PFF and the Azkals (and Malditas, for that matter) are still very much in the incubation stage. There is no real Youth program to speak of. The PFL is sputtering, especially after Meralco Sparks collapse. Most of these players were NEVER on the radar for the National sides of the country they were born in (and I am not talking about being a Youth International, either). What Dooley has done with a virtual Bad News Bears-type of team was miraculous. How Dooley is not being considered for the vacant USMNT job is mind boggling in the face of what he has done with the Azkals. If Dooley takes this team to the Round of 16 in Dubai in 2019, they should build a Monument to Dooley in Rizal Park. Fire Dooley? Whatever you are smoking, you need to stop.

I think you guys should continue this discussion when the decision is made and not before.
At the time Dooley was hired, there were more accomplished coaches who expressed interest in the job including Coach Winfred Schafer, but they couldn't afford their financial demands.
Since he took over though, Coach Dooley has proven himself a better coach(adding a lot of structure and organization in the Azkals play) than his predecessor Coach Weiss, but his tournament record has been decidedly mixed(not being able to advance beyond the group stage of the AFF Championship despite the team having done so the past 2 tournaments and despite hosting the tournament and losing the AFC Challenge Cup Final and the chance to advance to the previous Asian Cup are black marks on his record).
His player management and selection abilities have also been questioned, with him excluding(deserving or not) some of the Azkal's most experienced players(Schrock, Cagara, and even Etheridge for a brief time etc.) due to personality conflicts. His reliance on youth at the expense of experience at critical moments of major tournaments sometimes makes you scratch your head and in my opinion is partially responsible for the failures mentioned above.
You have to balance that with the positive things he has done like leading the team to the 2019 Asian Cup(although you could argue that they could have clinched the slot a game earlier against a weaker team like Nepal instead of leaving it to the final game in the group stage against a stronger Tajikistan team, to assure themselves of progression to the Asian Cup finals) and his development of many young players on the national team.
The current Azkals team manager might also be stepping down(acc. to some press reports) and the new one might have other ideas on who the head coach should be. Finances play a big part in this kind of decisions.
But he also might come back so we should wait until a decision has been made before describing him in the past tense.

Dooley's contract on the line Azkals head coach Thomas Dooley's contract expired on Saturday, March 31. His contract renewal is currently being deliberated as Palami and the Philippine Football Federation are in the process of evaluating his performance as a head coach since Monday, April 2. On paper, Dooley had many accomplishments with the Azkals, including leading the team to a historic Asian Cup berth. However, the evaluation by the PFF will include the players' insights on how capable the American-German will be in Asian Cup level. "There are a lot of reasons why he should be extended. We've had our best performance under his tenure. Ang kailangan nalang namin tignan is what are the conditions and we will be talking to players as well and titignan namin kung how the players [will] respond to him at the level of Asian Cup," said Palami. Due to many plans ahead and time constraints, the decision on Dooley's contract will come in a month according to Palami. "We have to make it a decision quick because we have to schedule friendlies, maybe give it a month or so." www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/football/199462-philippine-azkals-new-recruits-bayanihan-initiatives-palami

Dooley on the way out?AZKALS coach Thomas Dooley’s contract with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has expired in March 31 this year. He has successful four-year stint having qualified the Azkals for the AFC Asian Cup in UAE in January next year. He has also brought the Azkals to its best FIFA ranking of 111. But the writing is already on the wall. Although I love Dooley to lead the Azkals to the AFF Suzuki Cup which will start in November, and the AFC Asian Cup in the UAE in January, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) gods tell us otherwise. Since his contract has expired, coach Dooley is still waiting for his contract to be extended. However, Azkals manager Dan Palami announced recently that they will announce the Azkals coach by June 14 and among those who are considered is coach Dooley. Wait a minute. If the PFF still wants coach Dooley why not let him sign now not wait for June 14. It means only one thing. The PFF does not want Dooley anymore as simple as that. In spite of leading the Azkals to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup and to their best FIFA ranking in the history of football, the former US national team captain has failed to win anything for the Azkals. He also has a dismal record of 19 wins, 11 draws and 17 loses in his four year reign. Palami has announced that they are considering two other coaches for the job aside from Dooley. Sources in the PFF have revealed the names but we will not announce it yet as they are not confirmed. One coach is a foreigner and is unknown in the Philippine football community while the other one is a retired Azkal based abroad.Who ever is the new coach he will face tough challenges as preparation for AFF Suzuki Cup and the AFC Asian Cup will go full swing. The problem between club and country will once again prop-up. Whoever should be named as coach will sail on the rough seas that is Philippine football before he faces the real foes on the pitch. Retired Azkal based abroad - Could it be Rob Gier? For the foreigner unknown to PHL Football, hmmm looking forward to this. I hope he doesn't have dismal record on previous experience. Hoping he won't be another OJT on our team Coach Dooley - hmmm seems OK for me since he qualified us for Asian Cup. Hope our next tournaments under him won't end like the 2016 Suzuki Cup results.

My opinion: If we can't hire someone of SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER CALIBRE than Dooley due to lack of resources, we might as well just keep Dooley.

I really hope they would not choose Rob Gier. It's a big NO, simply because this is not the perfect time to experiment. I have a lot of respect for him as an azkal/player. But he should gain substantial amount of coaching experience first, before even considering him to be our head coach. Asst. Coach would be "maybe" okay for him.

06 June 2018 Philippine Azkals consider coaching change By Peter Atencio Coach Thomas Dooley is fighting to keep his spot with the Philippine Azkals national men’s team. Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said they also have a British coach who has handled a team in Thailand in their radar. “The challenge is how to prepare the national team. So, we are interviewing coaches,” said Araneta. The Azkals are currently set to begin preparations for the 2018 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup and Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup UAE 2019 once they name their choice of coach this month. And it’s either Dooley will be able to keep his job, or they will fire him in favor of a new one. The decision to evaluate Dooley came after he steered the Azkals to a historic Asian Cup berth a few months ago. Dooley‘s contract ended on March 31, and team officials led by Dan Palami will name a coach by June 14. Araneta said the Azkals are first scheduled for friendlies with clubs in Bahrain and a tuneup with Bahrain national team this September. They are getting ready for big challenges when the Azkals make their Asian Cup debut against Korea Republic on January 7, 2019 at the Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai . Then, they face China on Jan. 11 at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The last match of the group stage will be against Kyrgyz Republic on Jan. 16 January at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai. They secured qualification to the final round last March 27. The Azkals got it with their 2-1 win over Tajikistan at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to win Group F with 12 points. “We dreamt that one day we will have a team in the AFC Asian Cup, and now it has become a reality, said Araneta. manilastandard.net/sports/sports-plus/267354/philippine-azkals-consider-coaching-change.html

SCOTT COOPER who have handled Thailand's top two clubs Buriram and Muangthong in the past. His last managerial role was with another T1 side Police Tero. Cooper has an international managerial experience, having coached the national team of Anguilla in 2009. 2. JASON WITHE won both the TPL trophy and the Thai FA Cup with BEC Tero Sasana but that was way back in 2000. He was assistant to his father Peter Withe a former England international when he coached Thailand from 1998 to 2003. He is currently based in Thailand and Tranfermarkt lists him as the owner of T3 club Deffo FC. 3. DAVID BOOTH has been a veteran of the Southeast Asian football scene. Aside from managing Thai clubs, he has coached the national teams of Myanmar and Laos (twice). 4. GARY STEVENS managed Port FC in 2015. He's currently based in Malaysia. 5. KENNY SHIELS who was with BEC Tero Sasana until 2015 is currently manager of Derry City FC in the League of Ireland (Northern Ireland). UNLIKELY. 6. PETER BUTLER was coach of BEC Tero Sasana in 2011. He is currently managing Persipura Jayapura of Liga 1 (Indonesia) 7. ANDREW ORD was Butler's assistant in BEC Tero Sasana. Ord previously coached the Bangladesh NT (2017-2018). 8. ROBBIE FOWLER, the former Liverpool and Man City forward played as player-coach for Muangthong in 2011. Does not coach anymore. UNIKELY.

I respect Rob and appreciate his contributions to the Azkals. But please not him, not yet.
Not an impressive short list to me. Dooley seems a far better choice.
Hope PFF will not make a big mistake or we will be going backwards.
