Sven Goran-Eriksson as the new coach??? Incredible! Well, he's 70 years old and that may be a factor, but if he's a fraction of what he was at his height then this is a big coup. Obviously he's not doing this for the money.

Azkals boss to make sure PH will return to continental tournament By: Cedelf P. Tupas - Reporter DUBAI—Whether it’s financial support or emotional attachment, perhaps no other person has invested on the Philippines men’s national team in its quest for international glory than Dan Palami. That’s why the long-time Azkals manager was also quick to take responsibility on the team’s inability to reach the knockout round of the AFC Asian Cup here. The Azkals lost all three matches in their group against higher-ranked foes, but a strong performance in the 1-0 defeat South Korea and a first-ever goal by Stephan Schrock in the competition will be among the positives that can be taken away from their debut in the continental showpiece event. “The thing for me as a manager, I felt that we had actually a chance to get out of the group,” Palami said. “Maybe there were some other things that the management or the coaching staff could have done in order for us to get out of it, but we have to accept the result.” Palami has been bankrolling the squad’s campaign along with the Philippine Football Federation for close to a decade. And a first-ever appearance in the Asian Cup remains the biggest achievement for the country in the sport. “We’re happy and privileged to be part of this tournament, but we want to make sure that this won’t be the last time we join this tournament,” Palami said. “Our Under-22, Under-23 and senior teams will progress even further in the coming years.” Palami hired Swedish coach Sven-Goran Eriksson for the AFF Suzuki Cup and the Asian Cup, and the former England mentor managed to lead the Azkals to two wins, two draws and five defeats. Football director Scott Cooper, who lacked the coaching badges to handle the squad in a major tournament like the Asian Cup but spearheaded the start of the preparations until Eriksson took charge, will remain with the team. “Coach Sven’s engagement ends in this tournament,” Palami said. “Meanwhile, we have our football director Scott Cooper taking the reins in the senior team as well as preparing for Under-22 and Under-23 tournament. It is going to be exciting times in the next months.” The Under-22 side will see action in the Southeast Asian Games that will be hosted by the Philippines late in the year, while the Azkals are set to join the next cycle of World Cup qualifying sports.inquirer.net/335114/breaking-azkals-boss-to-make-sure-ph-will-return-to-continental-tournament#ixzz5d4ESs9Yw

This is what I thought all along. They were going to give the reins to Coach Cooper after this tournament. Nice to hear that they are also planning to have him coach the U22 side to the SEA games.

Good to know PFF has something for this. Probably he is our secret weapon for our future success as he know to train players from youth to their seniority.
I have a feeling that he will be a better coach than SGE. The friendly games vs Bahrain and Oman under his reign proved it. Hope he could now score is pro license to be able to coach in major tournaments for us.

Azkals coach Scott Cooper signs extension sports.inquirer.netMANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Football Federation extended the contract of Azkals coach Scott Cooper to help the team make a push for the 2023 Asian Cup and a chance at the 2026 Fifa World Cup, multiple reports said. Cooper became the Philippine national football team’s head coach in 2018, albeit on an interim basis, but relinquished the post to Sven-Goran Eriksson when the latter held the position for the 2019 Asian Cup. Cooper came back for his second spell as Azkals head coach in January 2019. “When I first came here, I saw the massive potential of the Azkals,” said Cooper. “During this pandemic, we’ve been setting goals and putting plans in place to achieve those goals. I can honestly say that we can still get better and I am committed to lead this team as it continues to make its mark in Asian and world football.” Cooper previously coached teams in Thailand and Indonesia and kept the Philippines in a respectable spot in Group A of the 2022 World Cup Asian Qualifiers. The Philippines (2-1-2) sits at the third spot with seven points of the group behind first place Syria with 15 points (5-0-0) and second seed China (2-1-1) with also seven points. China’s better win-draw-loss record puts it ahead of the Philippines in Group A. Philippine Football Federation Mariano “Nonong” Araneta praised Cooper for his efforts and expects better performances from the Azkals moving forward. “I think the team has improved under him, and we look forward to him taking the team to another level,” said Araneta.
