PFL kicks off Wednesday pfl.org.ph/pfl-statement/The Philippines Football League brought to you by Qatar Airways will kick off on Wednesday, 28 October 2020, at PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite. The league will release a revised schedule of matches on Monday. “We are happy to announce the kickoff of the 2020 PFL season on Wednesday,” said Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta on Sunday night. “This is a big moment for everyone in the football community. We appreciate the collective effort from the PFF, the clubs, and most important, the Games and Amusements Board and the city government of Santa Rosa, Laguna.” The league had initially scheduled its opening last Sunday 25 October, but inclement weather caused by Tropical Depression Quinta and positive Covid-19 test results on some players prompted the postponement of the matches. Following positive results on players from two clubs after RT-PCR tests on 21 October 2020 and their isolation, all players, coaches, and staff underwent antigen tests last Sunday inside the league’s “bubble” in Seda Nuvali in Santa Rosa, Laguna. All had negative results. Antigen tests will be conducted regularly every other day for the two clubs. Pre-match day antigen test will also be conducted for the rest. PFF and league officials appreciate the quick implementation of health protocols in Seda Nuvali and are grateful for the guidance and support of GAB Chairman Baham Mitra and Santa Rosa Mayor Hon. Arlene Arcillas. All clubs will strictly adhere to health and safety protocols prescribed for the league while staying in Seda Nuvali and playing matches at PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite. League coordination with the city government of Sta. Rosa, Laguna and municipal government of Carmona, Cavite will also continue.

07 November 2020 United City FC claims PFL title, blasts Stallion-Laguna MANILA, Philippines — United City FC clinched the Philippines Football League title after blasting Stallion-Laguna, 7-1, Friday night at PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite. UCFC fired five goals in the second half led by Spanish striker Bienvenido Maranon’s second hattrick of the season. UCFC entered the match a win away from capturing the title with a game to spare after Kaya FC Iloilo was held to a draw by Mendiola earlier in the day. “When we knew that Kaya’s game was a draw, we told ourselves that we’re going to seal this [win against Stallion],” said UCFC coach Frank Muescan, whose squad secured a spot in the AFC Champions League for being the newly-minted PFL champion. “Our main objective was to really win this game at all cost.” Mike Ott had a brace, scoring once in each half while Takashi Uddawara and OJ Porteria tallied one goal apiece in the dominant victory that pushed UCFC’s tally to 12 points. UCFC, which conceded its first goal in four matches, will still play Kaya on Monday in the two clubs’ final match of the season. Young Azkals cap off PFL stint with 3rd straight win The Azkals Development Team stuns Stallion Laguna for another 3 points in the bag The Azkals Development Team (ADT) pulled off another upset over title contender squad Stallion Laguna with a 2-0 blanking in the 2020 Philippines Football League (PFL) on Monday, November 9, at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite. The Under-23 national team rose to 2nd behind 2020 PFL champion United City FC with 9 points as the Young Azkals capped off their first top division league stint with 3 straight wins. 19-year-old Yrick Gallantes was the main threat to the established Stallion squad, that dropped another 3 points to remain at 5th place with 1 point. As ADT continues to regroup in the 2nd half, Gallantes produced a counterattack and fired it toward the goal, while Carlo Dorin came from behind to solidify the finish in the 52nd minute. In the 61st minute, Gallantes drew crucial contact in the 6-yard box for a penalty. After Stallion keeper Nelson Gasic fended off Jarvey Gayoso's back-to-back chances, the ADT captain – who was deployed as a central midfielder this time – coolly converted from the line to double the lead. The Laguna-based squad, though, looked like the better team in the first half as Fitch Arboleda fired a cross, but Nathan Alquiros' header hit the side-netting in the 40th minute. In the 86th minute, Stallion attempted to bounce back as Ricardo Sendra attempted to convert a chance with a header, but ADT keeper Quincy Kammerad came up for the deflection. www.rappler.com/sports/football/game-results-azkals-development-team-stallion-laguna-fc-november-9-2020This is good news for the U23 players slated to represent the Philippines in the SEA games and U23 AFC Cup competitions.

PFL cancels 2021 Copa Paulino, moves season opener to July Amidst the difficulties brought about by the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the Philippines Football League sponsored by Qatar Airways was forced to make adjustments in its 2021 calendar. The league announced that the Copa Paulino Alcantara, which was last played in 2019, has been cancelled and the start of the new campaign is postponed to a later date. The league tournament, on the other hand, has marked July 17 as its kick-off date. The PFL had earlier said that it is currently not looking at a bubble format for this season as back in 2020, all games were played at the PFF Training Center in Carmona, Cavite while all players, team staff, and league officials stayed in Seda Hotel in Nuvali, Laguna. “The (Copa Paulino Alcantara) will not push through this year because of the current situation,” said Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta, Jr. “We decided that we will proceed with the league by July 17 when we have the vaccines rolled out already.” The new date was decided upon with many factors in mind including the June FIFA international window and the 2021 AFC Champions League fixtures of United City and Kaya-Iloilo. What this does is it gives the teams a definite date where they can decide on their preparations forward. “We understand the situation the clubs are facing during these challenging times,” stated PFF General Secretary Atty. Ed Gastanes. “With a scheduled kickoff date of July 17, the clubs will be able to plan accordingly for another exciting PFL season.” Despite the sudden change of plans, officials from the PFF and the PFL are still working to help not just the resumption but ensure the growth of the country’s primary football competition. “The players are welcome to be vaccinated as it is a protection for them,” added Araneta. “We’re giving them a choice as PFF will be spending for the vaccines. I’m confident that they will accept these vaccines.” Besides United City and Kaya, member teams include Maharlika-Manila, Stallion-Laguna, and Mendiola ’91. The Azkals DT are a guest team. Looking to join the league this season are Loyola and Laos. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/pfl-cancels-2021-copa-paulino-moves-season-opener-to-july/204515?fbclid=IwAR1XmQeKrWvnwq2HN3BhCtGV3uS0IMU4-D2llsKymFqihx_844JkX2zhufAPlayers have only been able to play professionally for 5 games in nearly 2 years. It is the players that suffer from these enforced lack of activity and lost sources of income and they will be a disadvantage when inter league competition begins.

The Philippines has 0.9% vaccinated. Singapore is around 15% and the US around 30% to 40%, depending on the region. Kenshiro Daniels @kenchurro Every league in the world playing except us True but the PFF has offered free vaccination to all the players, coaches and other employees in the PFL. Unlike other leagues, the PFL is just fine playing their games on just one small stadium(instead of multiple stadiums with big crowds) without a live audience so they can easily do a bubble setup to minimize risks. Of course even those will require government approval to run but they should at least be given the same leeway as those for basketball(PBA, etc.) which in the past year or so were still able to run their leagues(in a limited capacity) without a live audience. I think the major impediment is the cost and practicality of administering a bubble setup since the PFF would have to setup isolated housing and practice facilities and pay for regular Covid testing so they can quarantine employees if they tested positive for the virus.
