Azkals skipper reinforces U-22 in breakthrough bid By Olmin Leyba MANILA, Philippines — Azkals skipper Stephan Schrock may reinforce the Philippine Under-22 team that’s gunning for breakthrough on home soil in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in November. SEAG football competitions allow a maximum of two overaged players and the Fil-German dynamo has offered his services to the U-22 squad targetting its first-ever Final Four appearance. “We’ll check who would complement the players who are there but ‘Schroecky’ has expressed his intention to be a part of that U-22 team as an overaged player,” said Azkals team manager Dan Palami, who’s been tasked to prepare the team for the Nov. 26-Dec. 10 SEAG bootfest. From the Azkals crew that battled China to a gutsy 0-0 draw in the Fifa World Cup and AFC Asian Cup Joint Qualifiers come three U-22 players in Fil-Dutch Justin Baas, Fil-Scottish Yrick Gallantes, and Fil-Norwegian Edison Suerti, who are all expected to play big roles for Team Philippines. “We have 30 players in the (U-22) pool now, including foreign-based and three players with the seniors team (Baas, Gallantes and Suerti),” said Palami. The hosts’ road to SEAG relevance got a boost when they avoided landing in the Group of Death during the recent draw. The Filipinos got drawn with Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Timor Leste in Group A, leaving defending champion Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore and Brunei in a death battle in the other group. “We’ve never reached the semifinal round so that’s the target right now. And I think the draw somehow gives us the chance,” said Palami. “But we’re not being complacent, we’ll be preparing as hard and as well as the seniors team (Azkals). We’ve actually run a simultaneous camp with the Azkals and U-22 and we’ve got good results so far,” he added, particularly proud of U-22’s performance in a friendly against an all-African side in Biñan recently. Phl U-22, which has been training since July under Azkals coaches Goran Milojevic and Scott Cooper, is slated to play in the Philippine Football League’s Cup tournament. “We’ll be competing in the Cup, that will be part of the preparations; by that time, we’ll have three or four games going to the SEA Games,” he said. www.philstar.com/sports/2019/10/18/1961183/azkals-skipper-reinforces-u-22-breakthrough-bid#7EhSuz00dRlcwbTR.99

Azkals U22 in Copa Alcantara serves as preview for 2019 SEA Games Assembling its most formidable squad yet, The Azkals management released the list in the morning of matchday which showed a good balance of collegiate standouts and professionals both based locally and abroad. The Philippines U22 squad’s opener in the Copa Paulino Alcantara served as a glimpse of what is in store for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) campaign this late November. However, Palami was quick to point out that the list of players comprising the squad for the cup is not yet a confirmation that it will be a hundred percent the same come the biennial meet. “I mean it’s not the final lineup yet. We’ll trim (the list) down to 20. We still have two players coming from the senior team (which will fill the slots for) the over-age players,” shared the Azkals’ boss. During their opener last weekend, it was to note that the team expects additional players (at least two more) overseas-based who coming with the hopes of playing a part in the cup. “Some of the players who are part of this (Copa Alcantara) team are yet to arrive, like Marco Casambre (of Thai club Chainat Hornbill) and Christian Rontini (of Italy’s Sangiovannese 1927).” With a big pool of talents being considered for the final cut in the SEA Games, Dan Palami is expecting an intense battle for spots from the players. “I think everybody can see that (each player) wants to play, that is why they are working hard to be part of the team,” Palami added further. Under-22 assistant coach Ernest Nierras also stated on a separate interview that other players are also still in consideration for the final SEA Games squad, confirming that changes can still occur and nothing is guaranteed when it comes to the spots. One particular player who has been a constant participant in the junior squad, but is not in the U22 lineup this Copa Alcantara is Ceres-Negros’ Dylan De Bruycker. “(De Bruycker) wasn’t released by Ceres for this competition. That’s the only reason.” Coach Nierras further informed that aside from De Bruycker, more players – overseas-based – are still in the process of being considered for the SEA Games squad who were not able to be part of the Copa simply because of their commitments with their respective clubs. “There are still five players (based overseas) who are not here (that are being eyed). “We are gonna field the best team that we can put together (for the Southeast Asian Games).” 5thminuteofaddedtime.wordpress.com/tag/azkals-u22/

18 November 2019 Schrock embraces leader’s role for young Azkals By: Cedelf P. Tupas DUBAI—Team Philippines captain Stephan Schrock didn’t need to hear the conversation among his younger teammates to understand how important his role will be when he reinforces the Under-22 team in the Southeast Asian Games football tournament next week. A few meters where Schrock was having breakfast, Yrick Gallantes was speaking to Under-22 teammates Justin Baas and Edison Suerti on the team’s need for a leader as the Young Azkals set out to land the country’s first medal in the biennial event that starts on Monday at Rizal Memorial Stadium. “I’m very confident I can lead them,” said the 34-year-old Schrock, one of the two overaged players picked by the coaching staff to power the Young Azkals in their biggest challenge yet. “I will try to guide the younger players as much as I can.” Gallantes said Schrock’s inclusion would be a game-changer for the Young Azkals, who take on Cambodia in their first match in Group A on Monday. Two days later, the team will face Myanmar, before tangling with Malaysia, before taking on Timor Leste as its final assignment in the group stage on Dec. 4 at Biñan Football Stadium. “We have some experience as a team in the PFL Cup, but Schrock has the personality and quality that will really help us in tough matches,” said Gallantes. “We need his voice on the pitch.” Five players in the SEA Games lineup are part of the current senior team that will play Syria on Tuesday night at Al Maktoum Bin Rashid Stadium here in the Fifa World Cup and AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers. Defender Marco Casambre, 20, is also part of the senior side and Under-22 team that will be coached by Serbian Goran Milojevic. The SEAG-bound pool had close to 50 players, before the lineup was slowly trimmed to close to 25 members in the Copa Paulino Alcantara Cup, where the Young Azkals won one match over Green Archers, drew against Mendiola and lost to eventual champion Ceres-Negros. We are a team of young players with talent,” said Suerti. “Thanks to our coaches, we are also able to put some structure into the way we play, game management and on the tactical side.” sports.inquirer.net/373957/schrock-embraces-leaders-role-for-young-azkals-breaking?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1574110061

Azkals team for SEA Games revealed By Ivan Stewart Saldajeno, Philippine News Agency on November 22, 2019 MANILA — A good mix of the team that played as a guest club in the Copa Paulino Alcantara and mainstays in the seniors team make up the final lineup of the Philippine men’s football team that will compete in the 30th Southeast Asian Games from Nov. 25-Dec. 10. Anthony Pinthus, who skippered for the Azkals in the ‘Copa’, rising star Jarvey Gayoso, and revelations Yrick Gallantes, Pocholo Bugas, and Chima Uzoka will headline the under-22 core of the Nationals for the SEA Games as confirmed by Assistant Coach Ernie Nierras on Thursday. Joining them are Michael Asong, Edison Suerti, Vince Diano, Jordan Jarvis, Marco Casambre, Finn McDaniel, Troy Limbo, Jerome Marzan, and JR Suba from the U22 Azkals team that played in the Philippines Football League’s cup tournament. Justin Baas, who like Suerti played for the Azkals’ first team during the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, was also called up for the final U22 squad. Also added to the squad were Dylan De Bruycker, who played for Ceres Negros in the Copa instead of the U22 Azkals, Christian Rontini, and Dennis Chung. All the participating teams are allowed to bring in two players older than 22 years old to their lineup, paving the way for the U22 Azkals to recruit Stephan Schrock and Amani Aguinaldo of Ceres Negros as their overaged reinforcements. Schrock, who is the captain of the senior Azkals, is expected to wear the skipper’s armband for the U22 Azkals. To make room for Baas, De Bruycker, Rontini, Chung, Schrock, and Aguinaldo, AJ Arcilla, Poi Saldivar, Ivan Ouano, JB Borlongan, Jovan Marfiga, Dean Ebarle, and Fritz Brigoli, who were all part of the U22 Azkals’ Copa team, were placed in the reserves’ list. www.canadianinquirer.net/2019/11/22/azkals-team-for-sea-games-revealed/?fbclid=IwAR1Rp2T5pKWwtmDht7FKkUuVJLk4-STJcwd5df3ywKPF9e-w8wVynLWPohQ

That is disappointing considering the players they have added and recruited for the team. Perhaps they should have taken up Phil Younghusband's offer to play for the team if they needed a scorer.

the decision to use gayoso as a defender is baffling. sayang, he can potentially score sana for the team. true. that was a head scratcher especially since grierson can be at the back too. his scoring wizardry could have opened up a few avenues early on.
