Revised Suzuki Cup schedule set in April with home-and-away formatTHE Asean Football Federation announced that the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 will be played from April 11 to May 8 next year with the intention of holding a home-and-away format during the new schedule of the tournament. The AFF said it will hold the home-and-away format only if the health situation in the region improves for the safety of the players, coaches, and fans. AFF president Major General Khiev Sameth said the dates were also determined to accommodate domestic league schedules. “We are delighted with the positive support that we have had from our Member Associations and that we have been able to find a suitable window next year to hold our most highly anticipated tournament,” said Sameth. “While we are well aware that the fight against the global pandemic is not over, we are cautiously optimistic for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 to take place in its full format as we hope to deliver the best of Asean in the tournament next year,” he added. The AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 was postponed due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation. It was supposed to be held November 23 to December 31. “The AFF also hopes that the announcement of the 2021 tournament dates will provide some clarity in planning for our commercial partners, including sponsors and media broadcasters, at a time of uncertainty. AFF and our Member Associations would like to express gratitude to all our fans, players, coaches, officials, media and other partners for their unwavering support and commitment despite these challenging times, and look forward to the AFF Suzuki Cup unifying the whole of South East Asia when we are able to come together again,” said Sameth. The AFF Suzuki Cup is the most prestigious football competition in Southeast Asia. It was in the same competition where the Philippine Azkals gained foothold in the region following their impressive semifinal finish in 2010. www.spin.ph/football/fifa/aff-suzuki-cup-moved-to-2021-april-may-a795-20200925?ref=feed_1_section

Football: Azkals eye calling up development team for Suzuki Cup 2021 It is possible that several, if not all, members of the Azkals Development Team could be called for active duty when the country sees action in the rescheduled ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup in April. Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta Jr. said the ADT side could be fielded in Southeast Asia’s men’s football championship, “because the Suzuki Cup falls on non-FIFA playing dates. Our professional players might not be available because the clubs won’t release them. “So this is the team we will prepare for April.” The AFF Suzuki Cup was earlier set for November 23 to December 31, 2020, but was postponed by the regional football body to April 11 to May 8, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, retaining the biennial event’s home-and-away format for the second edition in a row. The AFF has not yet announced when the draw for the group stages will be done. On the other hand, national team manager Dan Palami said that the Philippines lineup could be composed of “Azkal players by clubs and ADT players who are ready, plus local-based players from other clubs who are performing well.” National team liaison officer Ace Bright, who now serves as the general manager of United City FC, said some of the Azkals playing in the Thai League 1 could be available for the Suzuki Cup “since the competition will end in March.” Among the players in Thailand are goalkeepers Michael Falkesgaard, Patrick Deyto, defenders Daisuke Sato, Luke Woodland, Martin Steuble and Alvaro Silva, midfielders Iain Ramsay and striker Patrick Reichelt. Araneta said he was anxious of the national squad’s Suzuki Cup build-up since the national government’s Inter-Agency Task Force in charge of the virus crisis has yet to say when it will approve the training of national teams. “So we are still awaiting the go-signal from the IATF when we will be able to get our national team back in training,” the PFF chief said. Palami shared Araneta’s sentiments, saying: “It all depends on the IATF approval when our national team can begin training.” He added that just as in the past, “we will also consider training abroad but it will all depend on which country is accessible for travel.” With Cooper calling the shots, the ADT acquitted itself well in the compact Philippines Football League 2020, dropping its first two matches before racking up three straight wins to place third overall in the six-team round robin series. The ADT absorbed close 0-1 decisions to eventual PFL champion United City and runner-up Kaya-Iloilo FC, respectively, before shutting out clubs Mendiola (2-0), Maharlika Manila (5-0) and Stallion-Laguna (2-0) in succession. After the competition, Cooper, who will also call the shots for the Azkals, said that from his standpoint among those who were ready to step up to the next level are converted defender Mar Diano, midfielder Lance Ocampo and versatile co-skipper Jarvey Gayoso. Anthony Pinthus, who was on loan to UCFC and was adjudged the PFL’s top keeper, will also be back in harness for the ADT squad, added Bright. Since the country’s breakthrough semifinal appearance in the 2010 Suzuki Cup, Filipino footballers have reached the semis of Southeast Asia’s premier men’s tournament four times. The only time the Azkals failed to make it to the Final 4 was when the country hosted the tournament in 2016 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan, dropping out of contention in the four-team tournament with one loss and two draws. With the new home-and-away format introduced in the 2018 edition, the Filipinos were back in the semis again, losing twice to eventual Suzuki Cup champion Vietnam by the same scores of 1-2 and 2-4 on aggregate. news.abs-cbn.com/sports/12/04/20/football-azkals-eye-calling-up-development-team-for-suzuki-cup-2021

AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 rescheduled for December 2021 The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) has today announced that its flagship tournament, the AFF Suzuki Cup – which was originally scheduled for November 2020, will now take place in December 2021. This decision reflects the continued priority of AFF which is the health and safety of everyone, and has also been made to provide greater certainty to all of the event’s stakeholders, including the AFF Member Associations, teams, players and officials, commercial partners and fans. He added, “Looking at the crowded football schedule for 2021, including both international as well as domestic events which have been held over from 2020, also makes hosting our tournament in December an ideal time. The new dates, starting on 5th December and running into 1st January 2022, will provide the best opportunity for the event to be staged in its full format with home and away fixtures in both the group and knockout stages, and with stadiums filled with fans to encourage and celebrate their teams.” Originally re-scheduled to take place during April-May next year, the AFF Suzuki Cup is the largest and most prestigious football tournament in South East Asia and is set to see the national ‘A’ teams of the region competing for the Championship title. The AFF will continue to work closely with the various Member Associations and partners to provide further updates on the 2021 tournament as soon they are available. www.aseanfootball.org/v3/aff-suzuki-cup-2020-rescheduled-for-december-2021/

Philippines in Group A for AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 Tuesday, September 21, 2021 The Philippine Men’s National Team’s were drawn in Group A to familiar oppositions in the 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup following the official draw ceremony held today 21 September 2021 in Singapore. The Azkals were drawn together with five-time champions Thailand, four-time winners Singapore, Myanmar, and the winner of the Qualifying Round between Brunei Darussalam and Timor-Leste in Group A. Group B features defending champions Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Laos. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout semi-finals. The tournament is scheduled for 05 December 2021 until 01 January 2022. The Philippines will be competing in their 12th AFF Suzuki Cup having been four-time semifinalists from 2010-2014 and again in 2018. PFF president Mariano Araneta, Jr. and general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes attended the virtual draw ceremony together with other AFF officials. “We wish the Philippine Men’s National Team all the best in the upcoming AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 later this year,” said Araneta. “It will be an interesting competition being held in the midst of the pandemic. Nonetheless, we request all Filipino football fans to rally around our team in its bid to be champion of Southeast Asia’s most prestigious football competition, which had a television audience of almost 200 million during the 2018 edition of the AFF Suzuki Cup.” pff.org.ph/2021/09/21/philippines-in-group-a-for-aff-suzuki-cup-2020/

Azkals gear up for AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 Twenty seven players make up the Azkals lineup for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 set in Singapore beginning December 5. The Azkals have been grouped with Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar and Timor Leste in the competition that will run until January 1, 2022. Singapore will be the Azkals’ first assignment on December 8, followed by matches against Timor Leste (December 11), Thailand (December 14) and Myanmar (December 18). Except the match against Myanmar, which will be played at Bishan Stadium, all of the Azkals’ games are slated at the National Stadium. Captain Stephan Schrock leads the squad that also includes a handful of veteran campaigners like vice-captain Patrick Reichelt, Mike Ott, Martin Steuble, Angel Guirado and Kenshiro Daniels. Making their return to the squad after missing out on the Fifa World Cup and AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers last June are Amani Aguinaldo, Kevin Ingreso, Iain Ramsay and Daisuke Sato. Defender Jeff Tabinas, who made his debut against China in the qualifiers, has also been recalled along with Mar Vincent Diano and goalkeepers Bernd Schipmann and Kevin Ray Mendoza. Having represented the country in the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup qualifiers last October in Singapore, Oliver Bias, Justin Baas, Dennis Chung, Oskari Kekkonen, Sandro Reyes, Christian Rontini and goalkeeper Quincy Kameraad are also in the squad. Naturalized striker Bienvenido Marañon has been called up for his first tournament for the Azkals, just like Sweden-based defender Jesper Nyholm. Amin Nazari, Matthew Custodio and Harry Foll. Unfortunately, with the AFF Suzuki Cup held outside the FIFA window, the Azkals will also miss some big names like Gerrit Holtmann, Patrick Strauss, Raphael Obermair, Michael Kempter and Neil Etheridge, who are all tied up with their respective clubs. “This is a very prestigious tournament,” said Azkals coach Scott Cooper. “We have a history of doing well and going to the semifinals, but we need to do more than that. “We have to look at the last Suzuki Cup (in 2018) and that half of that schedule, was in the FIFA calendar. For this tournament, we have so many players unavailable and most of them were unable to be released by their clubs. We don’t have that luxury as other countries so we’re hoping that organizers look at the calendar in the future.” Azkals team manager Dan Palami admits the buildup to the tournament has been far from ideal with players based in different parts of the world and still playing for their clubs with less than two weeks before the actual tournament. Compounding the situation are the injuries to some key players. “We have to deal with the situation,” said Palami. “I think now more than ever, the team will have to summon the never-say-die spirit that Filipinos are known for.” Other players who were unable to secure a release from their clubs are Josh Grommen, Patrick Deyto and Randy Schneider. The Azkals also suffered a huge blow with the late withdrawal of several players due to injuries. Among them are Jarvey Gayoso, Manny Ott, Carlie De Murga, brothers Michael and Matthew Baldissimo, Sebastian Rasmussen and Adrian Ugelvik. Javier Patiño and Michael Falkesgaard have also retired from national team duties. “It’s extremely difficult hence we have to temper our expectations,” said Cooper. “We have a nice squad and we have a new addition in Jesper Nyholm, whose season is finally finished, so we can bring him in and there’s couple of new faces coming in.” Nonetheless, Cooper said the Azkals still need to be ambitious and “represent ourselves well.” “We have a good squad, we must be positive and go on and show what we can do.” theazkals.com/news/azkals-gear-up-for-aff-suzuki-cup-2020/?fbclid=IwAR2183OXtWnr5SHn4jQhGIzY6kH-0RwRWy6iiBHGosdTgz1ijqaI4UiFCHM

A lot of first team players missing due to team commitments and injuries particularly since the Suzuki Cup is outside the FIFA calendar.
It is good to hear Jesper Nyholm and Bienvenido Maranon making their Azkals debut though and that Vancouver Whitecaps Michael Baldissimo is still under consideration despite initially declining a previous invitation as he was expecting to receive a call up to the Canadian national team to the Gold Cup where he was part of the preliminary roster. He didn't make the final cut though.
Nyholm and Jefferson Tabinas should make a solid pairing at centerback and we finally get a proven goalscorer at forward with Maranon.

When the Philippine Azkals step on the pitch against Singapore on December 8 against host nation Singapore at its National Stadium, to kick off their 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup campaign, they will do so without key players. The likes of Jarvey Gayoso, Manny Ott, Carli De Murga, Michael and Matthew Baldissmo, Sebastian Rasmussen, and Adrian Ugelvik all find themselves unable to play for coach Scott Cooper in the biggest tournament in the ASEAN region due to injuries. “It’s extremely difficult hence we have to temper our expectations,” said Cooper. “We have a nice squad and we have a new addition in Jesper Nyholm, whose season is finally finished, so we can bring him in. And there’s a couple of new faces coming in. “We have a good squad. We must be positive and go on and show what we can do.” Just this week, De Murga and Ott suffered difficult setbacks while playing for their clubs Terengganu and Melaka United, respectively, in the semi-finals of the 2021 Malaysia Cup. De Murga was stretchered off the pitch near the 80th minute of the first leg of Terengganu’s clash against Johor Darul Ta’zim Football Club last Monday. This followed a clash with the latter’s Brazilian forward Bergson Da Silva. Reports stated that De Murga was immediately sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital after some “breathing issues” but is said to be recovering as of the moment. The unfortunate situation was notable as it was JDT’s medical team that rushed to the pitch quickly to tend to De Murga. #ReadMore Ceres-La Salle overcomes Young Lions in extra time Singapore Cup triumph JDT eventually won the tie 4-1 on aggregate. On a similar note, Ott represented Melaka United last night in its second-leg rubber match versus Kuala Lumpur City. The 29-year-old suffered a hamstring injury in his endeavor to help Melaka enter the final. Then his side folded, 3-5, on penalties with an aggregate score of 2-2. Another victim of the hamstring injury, Gayoso, is currently recovering from it after being on the receiving end during the Azkals Development Team’s semifinal clash versus Stallion Laguna in the 2021 Copa Paulino Alcantara. Amidst all the setbacks, the team is looking forward to the challenge ahead. The dream of making it to the finals of the Suzuki Cup remains. Still, it is up to the current pool of players to summon that fabled Filipino sporting attitude. “We have to deal with the situation,” said long-time team manager Dan Palami. “I think now more than ever, the team will have to summon the never-say-die spirit that Filipinos are known for.” tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/manny-ott-carli-de-murga-suffer-injuries-in-malaysia/226017

Hello all!
Quick Q from Canada. Obvious the big news is that Michael Baldisimo has seemingly accepted the Azkals call-up but had to leave due to injury.
Do we know if the Philippines have reached out to the other Canadians who are also eligible? Kadin Chung, Aidan Daniels, and Patrick Metcalfe? There's also the American at Cincinnati Zico Bailey. Seems like these guys would have been prime targets as they're all out of season.

Unless they are MLS starters, they probably need to go thru a tryout process in a friendly before making a tournament roster. They also need to have their Philippine passports ready before being considered for the national team. The Philippines tends to favor Fil Euros pros in callups so Fil Ams and Fil Canadians need to beat them out in tryouts convincingly to make the team particularly since the former tend to get hired by Southeast Asian clubs(which also prefer Fil Euros with professional experience) assuring their continued availability on future callups. The roster for the Suzuki Cup has been submitted already so I doubt though that there will be any additions for that tournament.

Kadin Chung is a standout player for Pacific FC in CanPL, I doubt he would need any sort of tryout game if was interested in the call, would be a starter at right back for The Philippines. He's 23 now, so it could see him maybe making the switch in the next couple years. Metcalfe is also a handy player with bags of potential for Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS, but I reckon he would fancy a shot with the Canadian National Team in the future if he was to continue on in his current development path. Aidan Daniels has had a great season with OKC in the USL Championship, but he was playing with the Canada U-23 this year, so may just not be interested in switching any time soon. Of the 3, I reckon Chung would be the most likely to make the switch.

Seems like these guys would have been prime targets as they're all out of season. I do have a bit of inside info on what's happening on the recruitment side of things. I don't have any news on Kainoa Bailey's brother Zico yet. Matthew Baldisimo and Kadin Chung were supposed to play for the Philippines under-22 team in the SEA Games back in 2019 but their papers didn't make it on time. Fellow Canadian Edris Najm who was playing in the Philippines Football League club Stallion Laguna at that time was also supposed to join but had encountered the same problem as the two. Aidan Daniels is still unknown among the people in the PFF. Scott Cooper has reached out to Patrick Metcalfe last year after seeing him get minutes in the MLS. Right now all the high profile Canadians (Kadin Chung, Baldisimo brothers, and Pat Metcalfe) are committed or on their way to committ to the Azkals. The Americans are pretty unique. The scouts I know have identified two 18 year old Americans who are starting to break out on their respective mother clubs. Those are: - Tyler Wolff (Atlanta United) - Alex Monis (Chicago Fire) The PFF know those two young men already. I don't know if contact is already established. There are also former USA youth national team players on coach Scott Cooper's radar - Lucas Del Rosario (Univ. of North Carolina) and Kaya Ignacio (University of Virginia). 16 year old 6'3 striker Isaiah Chisolm was contacted a few months ago. Filipino-American playing for DC United's academy. The guy recently had his debut for the second team of DCU in the lower division of the US. That's the North America prospect updates for 'ya! (This is the first and last time I'll leak any info here. I don't wanna get pruned by the PFF, at least in a figurative sense. They won't share anymore info to me if they knew).

One of the rising stars of the Philippine Azkals has become unavailable for selection in South East Asia’s biggest football competition. Philippines coach Stewart Hall revealed that defender Jefferson Tabinas, who plays for Mito Hollyhock in Japan’s J2 League, will not compete for the country in its quest to reign supreme in the 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup. “Tabinas is not coming at all,” shared Hall. “Obviously, there are problems in the Japan end and he’s not coming. That’s no problem for us. “If I give you the stats, we’re about 27 players short of what we consider to be our strongest squad.” Tabinas’s absence this close to the Suzuki Cup is a blow to the country’s hopes of finally winning the silverware. Veterans from past campaigns such as Carli de Murga, Alvaro Silva, and Luke Woodland are out of the pool, which means the likes of Matthew Custodio, Mar Vincent Diano, Christian Rontini and Yrick Gallantes need to step up quickly if they are called upon by the coaching staff. “We haven’t actually replaced him with a player physically coming in. We’ve got two young center-backs here from the under-23 squad that is working and obviously it’s an opportunity now for one of them,” said Hall. “We haven’t physically replaced him but obviously, we think we can cover him from within the squad.” Interestingly, though, fellow Group A team Thailand is set to have its lineup strengthened by late arrivals attacking midfielder Chanathip Songkrasin and left-back Theerathon Bunmathan who play for the Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo and Yokohama F. Marinos, respectively, in Japan’s J1 League. Both players missed out on Thailand’s win over Timor Leste but are available against Myanmar on Saturday. Additionally, Hall disclosed that there are two more players from the Azkals camp who cannot play against host nation Singapore tomorrow. Defender Jesper Nyholm and midfielder Iain Ramsay will definitely be out of action for the Philippines’ opener. “We have a player (Nyholm) who is flying in tonight and obviously tomorrow is a little bit too last minute dot com if you like so he won’t be considered for this game but he’ll play a part obviously in the other games coming forward,” said the British mentor. “We’re still trying to get Ramsay in and also I’ve been told – there are two more replacements coming in from Germany. At the minute, we’re working with 21 players. It will be nice to have another two or three actually to add to that. But they won’t be here until after tomorrow’s game.” Despite all of these roster challenges and changes, Hall is still happy to work with the cards that he has been dealt with. Ultimately, once the game starts, anything can happen and it is up to the Filipinos to find a way to get that win. “So you can be disrespectful to the players here and say this is a ‘C’ squad or you can say to the players here (that) it’s a fantastic opportunity for everybody so go out and take it. Maximize the chances that you’re gonna get. That’s the way I’d like to look at it.” tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/tabinas-to-miss-azkals-suzuki-cup-campaign/227048

Nazari goal not enough as Azkals fold to Singapore in Suzuki Cup opener The Philippine Azkals suffered a disappointing start to their 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup campaign with a 1-2 defeat at the hands of host nation Singapore, Wednesday evening at the National Stadium. The game came to life at the 62nd minute thanks to Singapore skipper Harris Harun, who was able to head the ball home off a corner. Things then went bad to worse for the Filipinos as winger Faris Ramli converted Zulqarnaen Suzliman’s cross at the 64th minute. Hope then sprung back up for the Azkals just when all looked lost after their quick collapse. Off another corner, midfielder Amin Nazari was able to head the ball towards the back of the net at the 69th minute to provide the Filipinos a chance to salvage something. The Philippines chased the game late in the period while Singapore did everything to protect its lead. Substitute forward Angel Guirado shot wide in the final minutes of regulation and had a header parried away to safety by Singapore’s Hassan Sunny. Beforehand, Azkals stopper Kevin Hansen was a busy man in the first half as the home side continuously bombarded his goal. Forwards Gabriel Quak and Zulfahmi Arifin had their attempts at the Philippines’ goal but the 27-year-old kept them at bay. The Filipinos struggled to muster any kind of offense in the period as the Singaporeans were relatively untroubled. The outcome leaves the Philippines with zero points in Group A. On the other hand, Singapore has one step into the semi-finals with six points thanks to back-to-back wins. The Philippines looks to bounce back on this loss this Saturday when it takes on Timor Leste. The kickoff is scheduled at 5:30 PM at the National Stadium. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/nazari-goal-not-enough-as-azkals-fold-to-singapore-in-suzuki-cup-opener/227130
