Philippines qualifies for the Women's AFC Asian Cup: the stories behind the story For Eva Madarang, it was really supposed to be just a week-long vacation. The footballer from Newberry Park, California, a small town just outside L.A., had a Philippine passport courtesy of her Pinoy father, and a plan: Come to the Philippines and try out for the national team on a lark. Get cut, go home, and complete the transfer from Moorpark Community College to Rogers State University in Oklahoma, where she would continue playing soccer at a higher level. To paraphrase George Peppard's character from that 80's show, A-Team, “we love it when a plan doesn't come together.” Madarang made coach Buda Bautista's squad for AFC Asian Cup qualifiers easily. It was such a surprise to Madarang that she had to buy clothes and other equipment while in Manila, since she didn't plan on staying this long. On the training pitch she was first deployed in her natural position, left back. Then with less than two weeks to go before the AFC Asian Cup qualifying matches in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Madarang was given a go at football's glamor position: Striker. The rest is history. Madarang scored two breathtaking goals in the opening match, a 4-0 rout of the UAE. One was a first-time finish off a center from Sara Castañeda, another a jaw-dropping volley from range. She finished with 4 goals in the 5 matches. (After beating the Emiratis 4-0 the Philippines downed Iraq by the same score, outclassed the Tajiks 8-0, drew Bahrain 1-1 to book their ticket to the next phase, then fell 5-1 to Jordan in the final non-bearing game.) Advertisement Her goals broke the ice for the Philippines on a bitterly cold 8 degree celsius evening in Dushanbe, exacerbated by sheets of rain. The conditions were so frigid that some players and assistant coaches wore their hotel bathrobes on the bench for added warmth. (The hotel was reportedly not best pleased by this.) Madarang's favorite footballer is Ronaldhinho, the Barcelona legend. With that finishing, one can see that she is emulates as much as she idolizes him. www.rappler.com/sports/football/philippines-qualifies-women-afc-asian-cup-stories-behind-story

Eva Madarang sets sight on top Italian league Two Filipina players are now playing in the Italian Serie B after Eva Madarang recently signed with Roma Calcio Femminile. This came shortly after national teammate Cathrine Graversen announced her arrival into the second-tier football league with ASD Calcio Pomigliano. Madarang had a previous spell in England with the Doncaster Rovers Belles where she turned pro after college. She revealed in a recent interview that she made the switch to continue studying. “My parents wanted me to get a master’s degree, a coaching license. “I am going to be playing soccer anyway, so might as well do that,” she explained. Madarang is taking up sports management at the American University of Rome, where its football program led to her recruitment by Roma CF. Not to be confused with its more popular sister team AS Roma, is in the higher division, Roma CF at the moment only has three points on five outings. In the Coppa Italia, they are grouped with the top flight Roma and UPC Tavagnacco, and have already won against the latter. “Coming to Italy and playing out here is fun. Meeting new people, learning different styles of play. It’s fun to learn more about the game than just playing in something that you’re comfortable with,” she added. The 23-year-old national striker remains unfazed by numerous challenges which already include the language barrier; understanding and communicating with teammates; an unfamiliar football style; and moving to a different country in the midst of a global pandemic. Her team is also in a tough spot after suffering a string of losses. Still, Madarang feels determined to turn things around. #ReadMore PWNFT set to do battle at the AFF Women's Championship “A goal of mine would definitely be to obviously do well in the league. I hope I can score some goals and have some assists to help my team move up, and hopefully get promoted to Serie A,” she said. The California-based Pangasinense could still potentially face her national teammate Graversen in a rare match featuring two Filipinas in a league abroad, something the new Rome occupant finds ‘wild’. “It was just interesting to see that Cathrine was here, I had no idea. I was like, whoa, what are the chances.” tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/eva-madarang-sets-sight-on-top-italian-league/196667

Eva Madarang cherishes ‘amazing’ first goal with Roma CF Eva Madarang has capped off her first season with club Roma Calcio Femminile in the best way possible: scoring a maiden goal en route to a big win. When Madarang joined the Italian club in November last year, it was languishing at the bottom of Serie B with only a handful of points. Since then, Madarang and her teammates in Roma have turned it around — even boasting a five-match win streak in early March. With so much at stake for their final game of the season last Sunday, they needed a win to avoid relegation to a much lower division. Prior to the closing weekend, Roma only had a single point advantage over rivals Orobica Bergamo, who were just as determined to stay in Serie B. But Roma rose to the challenge and clinched a crucial victory. It thrashed mid-table club Cesena 4-0 to secure their place in Italy’s second division with 34 points. Among the goalscorers was Madarang, and it also happened to be her first for Roma. “It took me all season to score a goal and this game was super important for us to win, so I felt amazing! “I have had other attempts in the past that were unlucky, so finally having one go in was a great feeling,” gushed the 23-year-old Madarang. The Philippine striker previously admitted it had not been easy, from learning the language and culture to understanding her role on the team. But in the end, she was grateful to accomplish an important feat with her teammates. “We fought our way out of relegation. I’m very proud of the team and how we were able to overcome the challenges that we faced to stay in Serie B. Our team struggled in the beginning, but we were able to find a way to pull through and come together,” Madarang said. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/eva-madarang-cherishes-amazing-first-goal-with-roma-cf/209156
