Here's hoping his upcoming experiences of playing in the Philippines will change his mind.

I believe the 2nd round is not a FIFA mandated date. Blame the AFC for scheduling WC qualifiers on those days. So the clubs are not obligated to release their players then. Nevertheless, a lot of them are more understanding of their player's desire to play in WC qualifiers so it is still possible he will be released. We will have to wait and see.

He's not the only one, even for the top national teams. This reminds me of what happened to Marcelo and why he wasn't in Brazil's line-up for the Copa America. He told the Federation he was injured and couldn't play in one of the tune-up games which was on the FIFA calendar. Unfortunately, he allegedly (I read this from a yahoo sports blog post so don't know how accurate the info is) e-mailed some friends and boasted that he feigned injury to skip the game as he was too tired from a long season with Real Madrid. Well, he didn't check the addressees on his e-mail before sending it and one of them was the Brazilian National Team Manager!
