www.spin.ph/football/news/philippine-volcanoes-national-team-mens-womens-rugby-sea-games-preparationsPHILIPPINE rugby said it has assembled its strongest pool of players in two years, vowing to win a medal and not be a mere token presence in the Southeast Asian Games next month in Singapore. “We are not coming just to participate in the games. We are aiming to bring home a medal and give glory to the Philippines,” said Volcanoes captain Jake Letts. Letts is joined in the player pool by fellow veterans Justin Coveney, Gareth Holgate and Matt Saunders who have all seen action in the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2013 and the 2014 Asian Games. The pool also includes new players who have experience in previous Asian Sevens tournaments. From the 18-man pool will come the final 12 that will see action in the SEA Games set June 6 and 7 at Choa Chu Kang Stadium. “This is the strongest 18 members selected since our debut in the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens,” added Letts. “Our squad has the depth and experience to do very well in this tournament. However in Sevens Rugby, anything can happen. We will by no means be expecting any easy games. Every game will be tough and we aren’t taking anything for granted. It is sure to be a very competitive tournament, but we are all looking forward to the challenge of capturing a gold medal for our country.” Philippine rugby officials noted that among the top contenders is host Singapore, which has invested substantially in rugby and has put up a semi-professional program for its Rugby Sevens athletes. “Of course all teams are aiming for gold. But at the end of the day, we know we should focus on our strengths as a team and play to the best of our abilities. It will all come down to who wants it more,” said Letts. While the men’s team competed in the 2005 and 2007 SEA Games, the 2015 Singapore Games will be the first for the Lady Volcanoes. Coached by Shirley Russell, a former member of the Australia national women’s rugby team, the Lady Volcanoes’ training routine includes two sessions a day, at least six times per week, which the team hopes will pay off in Singapore. “We are fitter, faster, and stronger now. The team underwent an intensive training program under the Philippine Olympic Committee which consisted of strength and conditioning, sports vision, nutrition training and even sports psychology,” said Lady Volcanoes captain Acee San Juan. “We also underwent Rugby Sevens-specific and National Team training camps leading up to this tournament. The support we get from our coaching and management staff plus the system that we have in place now is bringing out the best in us.” Read more at www.spin.ph/football/news/philippine-volcanoes-national-team-mens-womens-rugby-sea-games-preparations#LUqymXEZJ1CJVVvt.99

The Philippine Volcanoes underlined their serious championship aspirations by sweeping their first 3 matches on Saturday, June 6, in the preliminaries of the rugby sevens of the 28th Singapore Southeast Asian Games at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium here. The Filipinos opened their campaign by humbling defending champion Thailand, 24-10, subdued host Singapore, 17-0, then capped their day by clobbering Cambodia, 55-0, to move within two games of advancing to the finals the next day. “We’re in good position and I believe we can win our two matches the next day,” said team manager Matt Cullen, referring to their last two matches against against Laos and Malaysia at 10 a.m. and 1:20 p.m., respectively, tomorrow. He saw no problems against the Laotians, who drew the Cambodians, 14-14, but said that the Malaysians “are physical and could give us a tough fight. Still I believe our boys will prevail.” Cullen pointed out that they were virtually facing the same the squad they beat twice in separate tournaments abroad last year. Cullen said his main concern was the weather after a heavy downpour delayed the competition for about an hour. “The pitch was slippery and wet, and rugby sevens is a fast-paced game and we play better on dry conditions,” the coach said. Cullen said he was still anticipating that their rivals for the title would be the Singaporeans, who had only one loss against two wins after thumping the Malaysian, 14-5, and whipping the Cambodians, 36-0. He expects the hometown fans to pack the 4,000-capacity arena to support their squad “but my players are used to playing in bigger stadiums and play in front of a crowd of 40,000 so it would not matter to us.” On the other hand, the PH women’s rugby squad split their matches, prevailing over Laos, 17-0, and falling to Thailand, 0-36. - Rappler.com www.rappler.com/sports/philippines/95507-volcanoes-dominate-sea-games-rugby

Volcanoes out to lure more Filipinos into rugby sevensSINGAPORE—The Philippine men’s rugby sevens team is hoping that its success at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games here will prop up the Filipinos’ interest in the sport. Popularly known back home as the Volcanoes, the newly crowned kings of the biennial Games expressed optimism that rugby sevens will catch on among Filipinos because of its similarity to their favorite pastime, basketball. “Rugby sevens requires speed, agility, coordination and teamwork,” said Philippine Rugby Football Union director Matt Cullen Monday, the morning after the men’s team swept the competition for the gold medal. The Volcanoes bagged the silver when rugby sevens was last held in the 2007 SEA Games in Nakhon Rathchasima, Thailand. The women’s team, seeing action for the first time, settled for the bronze. The Volcanoes are looking at qualifying for the Olympics, but first, they wanted the seven-a-side event to gain ground at home. Cullen said they have organized club competitions involving rugby sevens groups in Metro Manila, Pampanga, Laguna, Cagayan de Oro, Albay, Davao and Cebu. “We are working on having television coverage for our tournaments,” said Cullen. The U16 Volcanoes won the Cup Division championships, defeating Malaysia in the final, 3-0, after sweeping the preliminaries. Josh Aho and Reed Santos shone for the U16 side and coach Paul Retzlaff was pleased to see the squad play solid defense, noting the team conceded only two tries in six games. “Defense wins championships and the Junior Volcanoes proved this,” said Retzlaff. The Philippine U14 squad beat Thailand in the Plate Final, 19-10, with Keanu Faynot scoring two tries and Rand Santos kicking 3 conversions. The U14 Volcanoes wound up with four wins, a loss and a draw. “Both the National U14 and U16 showed they can match it with the best teams in South East Asia… This was our first time to play in this tournament and we have certainly left a mark by winning in both divisions,” said Philippnie Rugby Football Union Director of Rugby Matt Cullen. The tournament featured teams from Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong.
