I believe so, but really, if JL is a starter with Esbjerg I dont believe a team in the SuperLiga will allow this with its starters. I'm hopeful but don't think it's going to happen. Since there's no mention of it (either from JL or from local scribes/grapevine) looks like it was not worked out, same with Cagara. However, for reference's sake, I checked Esbjerg's schedule for 2012-2013 on soccerway www.soccerway.com/national/denmark/superliga/20122013/regular-season/their last game is on Dec. 12 so he may be available if we reach the semis. interesting to note that JL was with a "newly" promoted team last season and is now moving to another "newly" promoted team. Question is, would he reprise his midfield role with Esbjerg or remain at his current playing position at Right Back.

Esbjerg fB 2-3 Silkeborg IF Saw 2nd half of the game, Jerry played RB. He looked shaky, but then again the whole back line of Esbjerg looked that way. They better improve as the team that beat them was a lower middling team last season and they looked really sharp. Good to know he's back as a starter.

www.spin.ph/football/azkals/news/jerry-lucena-azkals-midfielder-add-suzuki-cup-football-thomas-dooleyHe’s almost never on top of the stat sheets or the headlines, but the change in the offense under Thomas Dooley has given Jerry Lucena the chance to shine while staying deep in the Azkals formation. The holding midfielder’s impact was none more evident than in the Philippine men’s football team’s 4-1 victory over Laos at the start of the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup on Saturday at the My Dinh National Stadium. While Patrick Reichelt, Phil Younghusband, and Simone Rota scored the goals, the 34-year-old Filipino-Danish stalwart shone for the Azkals by pulling the strings from midfield along with Manny Ott. His facilitating manifested in a pinpoint pass that resulted in Younghusband’s header just before halftime. “I like to assist on goals, but I’m also one of the players who should keep the flow of the game and try to find possibilities to attack,” he said. But Lucena, who has scored only once in his more than three years with the national team, has also noticeably become more active on offense, filling the passing lanes and being a threat. Lucena is right where he wants to be, thanks to his growing familiarity with coach Thomas Dooley and vice versa. “I’ve always been a player who likes to be everywhere,” Lucena said. “And I think the position the coach gave me now (allows) me to be in many places. I think the coach knows me now and he finds the place where I’m supposed to be and I can give the team the most.” “The coach has given me a free (hand) to play the game I know it should be played,” the soft-spoken booter added. Dooley put Lucena deep in the field not only for his skills, but because the 5-foot-10 footballer understands the role very well. “He’s an experienced player,” Dooley said of his ward. “He knows what I’ve been saying that football has a lot do with knowledge of the game — Where do I have to be in what situation? Do we have to step up to the passing lane or not? And etc.” “He brings all that to the team and he is a player we need in the midfield,” the German-American mentor added. Reichelt also paid equal tribute to Lucena’s midfield partner in Filipino-German Ott. “I’m completely convinced that Manny Ott is the best center-mid in the UFL and Jerry, with all his experience playing in Europe and playing his whole life in the first division of Denmark, they’re two players who are individually strong, but are also team players.” Read more at: www.spin.ph/football/azkals/news/jerry-lucena-azkals-midfielder-add-suzuki-cup-football-thomas-dooleyFollow Us: @spinph on Twitter | spin.philippines on Facebook

The midfielder also gave his thoughts on the Azkals’ journey in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The Azkals are in second in Group H, tied with DPR Korea on points, but behind due to goal difference. “(The) National Team offers a lot of adventure, and it is something that gives a little extra spice in my world,” added Lucena. “We have a World Cup qualifier, where we are (in) a group of five teams and (it) is running until March next year, and therefore it is also important to me that I can continue to get training at the highest level.” football.com.ph/azkal-jerry-lucena-pens-contract-extension-with-esbjerg-fb/The good thing about Jerry is that he realizes the importance of staying fit and in shape while continuing training with his top tier club, in order to prepare for the WC qualifiers. His club probably prefers that he retire and work as an assistant coach for them, but because he wants to continue his national team adventures, his club has worked out an arrangement with him(probably at a lower pay scale) so that he can play the dual role of a depth player as well as an assistant coach, in order to be able to train with his team. Because he is not a starter, his club usually is willing to release him even for smaller tournaments outside the FIFA mandated schedules, so this arrangement works best for Jerry and the Azkals as well.

It's a good thing he got an extension, with a role as a "player-coach". I think Esbjerg is already preparing him for life after playing football. If it's time for him to retire, I think could be an assistant coach for the azkals. Or a head coach, if he will have so many experience coaching.

It's been the coolest, pure adventure, to be part of the five years, and personally it has given me so much. It was like being part of a family, and I regret only that I did not do it sooner, says Jerry Lucena. He completes his contract with EFB for the summer, and that's the end of his career at the top level. I am sorry to hear about this. I think he can still play at the international level and UFL level as well. He was always a player you could depend on in defence. It looks like he is also calling it a day on his professional career and pursuing coaching opportunities after the end of the season. Hopefully he can return to the Philippines as a coach someday once he has accumulated experience in Europe.

This is just a bad news for philippine football. Jerry is one pf those players you can rely on. His presence gives the team calmness in defense. He is a player that the new kids should look up to. PFF should make a proper send off for jerry and rob.

In the midst of a great night football last night this is the dark spot. Sad news to hear. Even saw him play his first cap together with Cagara here in Singapore back in 2011 a friendly against the Red Lions. He sure do deserve a propers send off. And yup he must also be active in Philippine football just a last hurrah at UFL or as a coach.

He and Mulders are my favorite azkals because of their commitment to the team. Sadly they're both retired now.

Lucena interview part 1 as translated in English by Google: Lucena: Height A punk was the 2003/04 season SOCCERSuper League 8th June 2016 10:00 Photo: Lars Rønbøg / Getty Images Super League Esbjerg fB Jerry Lucena The 35-year-old Esbjerg icon Jerry Lucena has set his career and looks with bold.dk here among other things back on the highs and lows and gives his opinion on Esbjerg fB's lack of direction. A number of profiles have put boots on the shelves this summer . bold.dk've talked to some of them about his career and future. Versatile Jerry Lucena has at the age of 35 years decided to set his career this summer. He reached among other things, a total of 334 Premier League matches - of which 216 for Esbjerg and 118 for AGF. If you are stopped at the right time? - Yes, I think so. It has been a perfect transition. I was allowed to play until I was nearly 36 years and the last year I have been allowed to get used to the idea of having to retire, while I have begun training profession. It has been 60-40 in trænergerningens favor, so it has been a really good transition. - I have experienced what I had in my career. Interest in work outside the chalk lines has been very high lately, so I have a great desire to get started. What was his career highlight? - At club level it has been bronze medals in Esbjerg in 2003/04-season. We were number one until five rounds before time and it annoys me, of course, that we did not finish the job, but at the same time I am very proud of how close we were. Obviously the highlight at club level. - It was a very accomplished season and we had a cool team. It was also excellent to help win the Cup final in 2013, but I've just always evaluated the league to be much larger than the cup. - In addition, my time on the Filipino national team also clearly be a major highlight of my career. What has so was his career low? - In 2006, we lost the cup final against Randers and it did really, really hurt. We were friends and should also clearly winning the fight. But unfortunately we played with too many nerves. You never got abroad in your career, but there were opportunities to get out of here? - Yes, it was definitely. But I chose to be in EfB long. I was 27 years before I went to AGF, and I should probably have been the place there or a few years earlier, if I should have been going. It was there my career peaked. - I wanted to get going, but it would be an adventure, and I think not, for example Sweden or Norway were. There were several things in the pipeline and lots of interest, but it was never really quite specific. Luckily, I got my adventure later in the Philippines. What do you concretely do in Esbjerg future? - I'll be assistant around U17- and U19 teams, and I'll act as a mentor for the young players and help them become even more ready for the Superliga-ball. These are the areas I will initially commit me, but in the long term there is no doubt that I would like to have my own youth teams. What are your ambitions for the trainer profession in the even longer term - you have a head coach stored in the stomach ? - So far, my only ambition is to be youth coach in EfB. One should never say never, but, of course, much depends on how crazy I am with coach job. It remains to be seen. There has been no doubt that you are EfB'er with the whole heart. Away from the set, it seems that the first team has been lacking direction lately. Is that how you see it? - It's no doubt. It can all be shown. It has been difficult to see a style and we have to ask ourselves; What EfB DNA? What characterizes us? These are things that the club is working to identify. Past success in EfB has been built on many young players - and many proprietary players. Is that the way you would like to see the club go again? - Yes, there is no doubt that I think we should live our own talents combined with good players from outside. But not as many as in the past. We must use our own good players complemented with profiles from the outside - from around the world. Read on again Thursday in the second part of the interview with Jerry Lucena. Here are Esbjerg icon among other things, about his national team career and a Russian who made him dizzy in Aarhus.
