Davao kids in PH teamBy Charles Raymond A. Maxey Sunday, May 29, 2011 TWO young footballers from Davao City have been named to the Philippines U13 boys football team, which will compete in the Asean Football Confederation (AFC) Festival of Football from June 1 to 7 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Darius Joseph Ramos Diamante and Javier Romero-Salas, both of the Ateneo de Davao University, were the only players from the Davao Region taken in by the national team. The PH boy booters will be playing nine other countries in the week-long tournament. Both 13 years old, Diamante and Romero-Salaws didn't just earned slots to the national squad, they were also picked captains of the young booters bound for international competition. Diamante was picked skipper of the first team and Romero-Salas was named captain of the second team. Joy Ramos Diamante, Jed's mother, said Philippine Football Federation (PFF) officials made the announcement of the two Davao players' inclusion to the PH team last Saturday in Cebu where the players participated in a clinic conducted by some members of the Philippines Azkals at the Aboitiz Field. Diamante and Romero-Salas had undergone training with other U13 players from others parts of the country since April 25 before they officially secured slots to the national team. Both players have been teammates since the time they played in the U6 tournaments. Jed, as Diamante is called, has two brothers who were also named to the PH U14 team--Gio and Gelo. Diamante, who started playing soccer whe he was still five years old under coach Christian Eya, graduated from Grade 6 as salutatorian. Both Diamante and Romero-Salas qualified to the PH U13 team when they were selected by coach Bing Colina during the PFF Mindanao finals held at the Deca Homes in Davao City. Both players have been teammates in Palarong Pambansa tournaments as well in a series of as competitions in Europe. Link: www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/sports/2011/05/29/davao-kids-ph-team-158198

7 Cebuanos make it to PH U-13 teamCebu Daily News 7:05 am | Monday, May 30th, 2011 SEVEN Cebuanos made it to the final 22-man lineup of the Philippine Under-13 (RP U13) tagged the Little Azkals, who are leaving today for Malaysia via Manila for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U13 Festival of Football from June 1 to 7. The seven are Major Dean Ebarle (defender) of the Abellana National School (ANS); Mario Lorenzo Ceniza (midfield) of Springdale; Moiselle Angelo Alforque (midfield) and Vincent Lobitos (midfield) of the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC); Kintaro Miyagi (defender) of Bright Academy; Lawrence Colina (defender) of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF); and Lorenzo Genco (midfield). Genco, a former student of the Cebu Learning Center (CLC) and a former member of the Cebu Elite Team arrived last week to join the training camp. Genco, who is half-Italian, half-Filipino, followed his brother Carmelo to study in Italy and attend a football academy this year to further hone his football skills. The youngest in the group, Genco, who goes to Tommaso Natale Football Academy, said he found it strange to be undergoing the training camp after his rigid training in Italy. “It is more lax here, the coaches in Italy are very strict,” Genco said. Genco’s inclusion in the team was earlier questioned by some parents of the Cebu Elite Under-13 group and the Cebu football community because he has not played in the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Festival of Football held in various regions over the summer. Coach Oliver Colina defended his selection, saying it was his discretion as head coach of the team. He also said that not all members of the national team played in the PFF Festival of Football. Cebu Football Association (CFA) Richard Montayre and head of the PFF grassroots and youth development committee defended Colina’s selection. According to Montayre, Genco may have attended the training camp for a short while, however, we cannot also discount the fact that the training he has had in Italy is way advance than what we have here. He said that they wanted to send a good team to an international tournament and not a team of politicians. He added this is one of the reasons why we opt to get Filipinos who are abroad to man our teams—because of their advance training. “If we are going to follow their reasoning then perhaps half of the Azkals should also not play in the national team,” said Montayre. They may not be here in the country but they are Filipinos and have every right to be part of the team. Link: newsinfo.inquirer.net/10454/7-cebuanos-make-it-to-ph-u-13-team

Little Azkals chalk up a win in MalaysiaCebu Daily News 7:50 am | Sunday, June 5th, 2011 THE PHILIPPINE Under -13 tagged the Little Azkals managed one win, two draws and three losses so far as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U13 Festival of Football in Malaysia paused for a skills test yesterday. During the first day of the festival last Thursday, the Little Azkals fought Laos to a scoreless draw and powerhouse team Indonesia to a 2-all draw before bowing to Singapore, 1-2. The Friday matches did not start so well for the Little Azkals as they suffered a 0-3 loss against Vietnam and an 0-4 loss against Thailand. However, they made up for it by blanking Cambodia, 3-0. Head coach Oliver Colina said that the team has been inconsistent, which is why they won some and lost some against strong teams and bigger players. “We just play hard and our playing sometimes is not consistent. Some of the kids are also intimidated with the sizes of the different teams. Their U13 players here are taller,” Colina said. Despite this, the team has taken the notice of the coach from Indonesia, who had said that the Philippine team is strong. He added that the advantage of the teams who have won against them is their understanding of the game. The second format of the tournament will start today. newsinfo.inquirer.net/12450/little-azkals-rout-cambodia-4-0Little Azkals rout Cambodia, 4-0By Mars Alison Cebu Daily News The Philippine Under-13 team tagged the Little Azkals added another win to their tally in yesterday’s resumption of matches of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U13 Festival of Football in Malaysia. The Little Azkals once again shutout Cambodia, 4-0, yesterday morning with its first goal scored just three minutes into the match courtesy of Jeremiah Borlongan of the Cagayan de Oro Misamis oriental Football Association. The Filipino booters continued their attack with Davao’s Darios Jed Diamante adding a goal in the 15th minute of the game. Springdale’s Lorenzo Ceniza completed a hat-trick for the Little Azkals 11 minutes before the second half. The Little Azkals did not let up in the second half and wrapped up the match with another goal courtesy of Javier Romero Salas of Davao in the 46th minute. Head coach Oliver Colina attributed the win to the fact that team has now adjusted and is starting to pick up their game. However, Colina said the Little Azkals have not yet shown their full potential. He said this might be because the team is not comfortable playing under the scorching heat of the sun. It was a different story in the afternoon, as the Little Azkals match against Singapore was abandoned with the score pegged at 0-all due to heavy rain and lightning. All coaches are having a meeting as of presstime to decide on whether or not to continue the match. Today, the Philippines will go up against Malaysia in the morning and Laos in the afternoon.

Little Azkals finish AFC stint with 3-2 win over LaosCebu Daily News 7:10 am | Tuesday, June 7th, 2011 THE PHILIPPINE Under 13 team ended their campaign in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U13 Festival of Football in Malaysia with three wins, three draws and four losses. After suffering a 0-4 shutout against host team Malaysia yesterday morning, the Little Azkals returned to the pitch in the afternoon, edging Laos, 3-2, in their final match of the festival. The Little Azkals waxed hot from the start with Jeremiah Borlongan of the Cagayan de Oro Misamis Oriental FA finding the back of the net with a goal made 30 yards from the center just four minutes into the match. Two minutes into the second half, Laos scored the equalizer and the score remained at 1-all until Davao’s Javier Romero Salas received the ball inside the penalty box and kicked it in with his left foot to pull the Philippines a point ahead. In the 52nd minute, Anton Yared of the Negros Oriental Football Association (NORFA) put the Philippines far ahead after heading in a corner kick with just eight minutes left in the match. Laos did not give up by staving the Philippines lead to one with a goal just two minutes later. However, the Little Azkals tightened their defense and the match eventually ended in their favour. Philippine coach Oliver Colina explained that the participating teams were not ranked because the festival was developmental and not a qualifier tournament. Bayawan City teen joins Phil. Team Junior Azkalsby Rachelle M. Nessia DUMAGUETE CITY, June 11 (PIA) -- The next football teenage sensation in the Philippines may very well come from Negros Oriental. Ian Dannelle Eumague, 13, from Bayawan City, Negros Oriental was recently recruited to the Philippine Team Junior Azkals by Oliver Colina, head coach of the Philippine Football Federation Under 13. Colina spotted Eumague's potential as goalkeeper during the Football Federation Under 13 tournament held recently in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental where the youngster played for Bayawan City's St. Agustine Academy high school football team. Eumague is a freshman high school student in said academy. Following the games in San Carlos City, the coach persuaded Eumague to join the Philippine Junior Azkals Team where he could be an asset, according to Bayawan City Information Officer Eli Manlangit. Manlangit said Eumague is now training with the Junior Azkals Team in preparation for their upcoming tournament in Kota Kinnabalu in Malaysia during the Asian Football Confederation Under 13 Boys Festival Football 2011. Under Coach Colina, who is also a Cebuano, the Little Azkals Team will go up against booters from Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Timor Leste and the host country, Malaysia. “Ian Dannelle Eumague could very well serve as a living example for the youth who could tap his potentials to his advantage making himself, his family and his fellow Bayawanon very proud,” said Manlangit. Little Azkals: Up close and personal By Mars G. Alison Cebu Daily News
One of the most successful national football teams in 2011 is the Philippine Under 13 (U13) squad.
Tagged as the Little Azkals, the U13 team gained respect by being the youth team that managed to put up decent wins in a prestigous international event despite formidable odds.
Scouted back in March 2011 from all over the country by head coach Oliver “Bing Bing” Colina and his staff and made to undergo training barely a month in Cebu before being sent to Malaysia, the team exhibited an extraordinary bond and managed to come home with three wins and three draws in 10 matches played in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U13 Festival of Football.
While the team is very proud of its victories over Cambodia—whom they blanked twice—and Laos, the Little Azkals were also commended for forcing powerhouse Indonesia to a 2-all draw.
The team’s achievement was a surprise and even German football expert Eckhard Krautzun credited the squad for being a “very disciplined team.”
The Little Azkals is made up of Major Dean Ebarle of the Abellana National School (ANS); Mario Lorenzo Ceniza of Springdale; Moiselle Angelo Alforque and Vincent Lobitos of the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC); Kintaro Miyagi of Bright Academy; Lawrence Colina of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF); Lorenzo Genco; Yared Anton, Ian Daniel Eamague, Kyric Parao and JHenry Hamdam of the Negros Oriental Football Assocation (NORFA); Mason Trent Vergara of (NOFA) San Carlos City,Negros Occidental; Darios “Jed” Diamante and Javier Romero-Salas of the Davao FA; Sebastian Patangan of the Dipolog FA; Jeremaih Borlongan and Dimitri Lionel Limbo of the Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental FA; Harel Dayan, Josh Albert Miller, John William Abraham, Ray Vincent Sanciangco and Marco Alessandro Casambre of the Rizal Football Association (RIFA).
With the cohesiveness that the team has achieved in the so little time that they have spent together, the Little Azkals is the team earmarked to represent the Philippines in the qualifier for Qatar World Cup 2022 as it is hope to be the first team to undergo a 10-year grassroots program of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).
In a conversation with the Little Azkals, the boys shared how proud and happy they are to represent the country and how they have made football their life without discounting their education.
Tasked as the team captain, Jed leads his teammates in answering the questions while the rest listen.
CDN: Did any of you expect to become a member of the national team? Why?
LITTLE AZKALS: No Harel: Because dati mataba ako. Jhenry: Dati maliit ako. LITTLE AZKALS: Computer! JED: I might have become a nerd because if I hadn’t gotten into football I would not have become physically fit, I would have just been studying and studying. CDN: For how long will you boys be playing football, how committed are you to the sport? LITTLE AZKALS: We will still be football players in the future. DIMITRI: We are very committed, football is our life. CDN: Who are your football idols? LITTLE AZKALS: Our coaching staff (Colina,, Aeyh Fabroada, Eleazar Toledo, Noel Marcaida), Lionel Messi, Xabi Alonso, Stephan Shrock, Thomas Mueller, Chieffy Caligdong, Iker Casillas. CDN: What team/teams would you consider as the toughest that you have gone against with? LITTLE AZKALS: Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. CDN: What do you aspire to become? LITTLE AZKALS: Become an Azkal CDN: What do you find difficult as a team: LITTLE AZKALS: That we are constantly separated from each other and when we don’t get enough sleep during training or matches. CDN: How would you encourage others to play football? LITTLE AZKALS: Show them the benefits of playing the sport. ANTON: Let them play and have fun. CDN: What is your message to others who aspire to become members of the national team? LITTLE AZKALS: Try and try until you succeed, don’t lose hope, don’t stop playing soccer, and work hard. CDN: Do you have a message you wish to convey to everyone? LITTLE AZKALS: Please support the Little Azkals, please like us on Facebook.

Yesterday I had the previliged to hear the sentiments on one of the parents of U14 'Little Azkals' (who were U13 last year) as they are now in a delima on their decision whether to send their sons to Italy or not. The problem started when Richard Montayre the manager of this age group told them last February 2012 that there is 2 million pesos yearly budget for this age group and the Italy trip will be subsidized by these but for the next out of country training will be solicited by parents. But it all changed when they have their final meeting last sunday that each parent should shell out at least P28,000 per player in order for them to be in Italy by mid April excluding the P9,500 pesos processing and visa fee which took some parents to quit their child due to financial constraints as the manager pointed out that AFC U14 festival in Sabah, Malaysia is included in the budget of 2M as well as another camp in Japan in June which give the PFF no choice but to ask for the parents for help. Montayre also presented and send each parents a sponsorship package from P20T - P500T with no specific as to where and when the adds will be placed and terms of condition are vague. The Manager also didn't use any advertising agency in Manila or Cebu to establish a much awareness to the business people and to the masses instead they leave it all to the hands of the parents to materialized. Not only that, the requirements for Italy has been in a staggard mode as every week there comes another document requirements for the parents and player to submit in ASAP that day. In my assessment the PFF should be fair in each age groups budget and not be one sided only where the senior team gets all the accolades because of Dan Palami and the Kasibulan 2019 project which has an 80 million fund from PAGCOR in 7 years.

That's a good point jonny but I think that's not the case for now as only 14 parents agreed to shoulder the P28,000 in going to Italy while the others back down.

It will be a busy summer for the Philippine Under 14 football team also known as the Little Azkals as they prepare for three international exposures in Italy, Malaysia and Japan. The Little Azkals started their training camp at the Don Bosco Boys Home in Liloan last weekend and will end on April 15. First up for the Little Azkals will be the friendly tournaments in Italy, where they will also be having a training camp courtesy of the football academy Scuola Calcio Giacomo Tedesco in Palermo, Italy, through its director general Nicolo Ferrante. They will be leaving on the second week of April and return in May, where they will resume the final phase of training in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-14 Festival of Football in Sabah, Malaysia from May 28 to June 4. Of the 30 chosen to the training camp, only 22 were selected to go to Italy. The rest will return to their respective places but were instructed to continue their training because they still have a chance to be in the official lineup for the Malaysian tournament. After Malaysia, the Little Azkals will be given a three-day rest before returning to training in preparation for an invitational tournament in Japan from June 17 to 24. Colina said that if the Malaysian lineup performs well, the same lineup will be used for Japan. If not, they might replace some of the players from those who were left behind. As part of their intensive training in Liloan, friendly tournaments were also lined up for them against Don Bosco U16, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu U14 and U16, Central Visayas teams of coach Joselito Bono and Glen Ramos, who will be competing in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa in Pangasinan. newsinfo.inquirer.net/171941/busy-schedule-for-little-azkals
