vcurams.vcu.edu/ms/05bios/burkey.htm6'2" forward/midfield who graduated from Virginia Commonwealth Univ in 2007, described in his university profile as Great athlete, strong and fast ... Very fit and powerful ... Will be tough on defenses. Used to play in the Premier Developmental League level(4th tier in the US) with several Virginia based teams. He now plays for the Aegean Hawks, which he joined in 2008 where he is listed as a forward. Aegean Hawks is part of the USASA, a purely amateur organization that groups several regional and ethnic leagues, that is at the bottom level(5th tier) of the US Soccer Pyramid. At least they get to participate in the US Open Cup where they have been relatively successful at their level in the past. Certainly not very impressive by US standards. He is probably being looked at as a candidate in the target forward mold, where he will be competing with former national player Chad Gould(England) and current trialist Gustav Sjoberg(Sweden) who are also both in the lower tiers of their respective countries. He was discovered after participating in the trials in Daly City, California and invited to attend the camp this month. He is also currently part of the coaching staff of the HP Elite and Beyond Academy. The PFF should ask him to do some clinics in Manila as he has help train hundreds of students at his academy.

I agree that PFF should ask Nate to help with the training.

vintagefutbolclub.com/azkalsunited.tumblr.com/post/5793647620/in-the-words-of-nate-burkeyDate: May 24 2011 Almost a month ago I was sitting on a roof in Georgetown with two of my best friends Khoi B Phan and Brandon Fisher just talking about life. Excited but not exactly knowing what my near future held, I said “I want to live a life that no one has.” since then I decided to quit my job and booked a one way ticket to my homeland…the Philippines. Business class courtesy of my mom’s frequent flyer milage. Over five years ago my junior college coach Dave Sexton told me I should get in touch with the Philippine National football team. At the time I had no idea this team even existed. He told me there was an English-Filipino player he knew was playing for the country and that I should look into it. Five years later and several emails with multiple contacts I have finally arrived. Coming here I had two opportunities to play in the Philippines. One with Kaya FC who play in the UFL of the Philippines and the other with the Philippine National team “Azkals.” When I first arrived I played in a 6v6 tournament which was basically my try out for Kaya FC. After the first game scoring two late goals to win the game 3-1 the player manager told me I can definitely play for Kaya in the upcoming season. Excited with this news, I still had my main goal to accomplish to make the Azkals. I have been with team for the past two weeks training some days twice a day for our world cup qualifying match vs Sri Lanka on June 28th. So far the training has been mostly physical with some playing here and there. Overall I have done well and the coaching staff seems to like me. The only critic I have heard is I am to shy at times. Being home in the Philippines playing the game I love has been a dream come true. It’s something I have always wanted to do and now that I have this opportunity I plan to take full advantage of it. Everyone here has been so welcoming and kind. The game has grown tremendously and it seems it’s growing to be the number one sport in the country. With the Azkals recent success the fan base has grown enormously. There are Azkal fans pretty much everywhere we go and they all show so much support for the team. My plan is to stay here and play the game that I love so much and to hopefully represent my native country in a World Cup qualifying match. I have nothing but love and support from family and friends here and from back in the USA. I try my best to remain grounded and humble, and to stay focussed on what’s ahead. With the help from God who continues to answer my prayers I am doing what I have always wanted to do. And with the help of listening to my favorite band from back home SOJA, I am able to feel at peace and inspired to accomplish goals in life. Until next time… (Source: vintagefutbolclub.com) Just wanted to add with Nate Burkey and Jason Sabio joining the team Kaya FC will be a force to reckon with in the next season along with Anton, Yannick and Aly.

www.alextimes.com/news/2011/jun/14/former-titan-takes-his-talents-to-manila/I didn't post the article as jimsar said, some publications in the us are very aggressive about others copying their stuff. Just click on it. It seems that nate burkey is making a career change. He has given up his jobs in the US in order to pursue his dream of plaiying football professionally and with the national team here in the Philippines.

Is that why Weiss picked him even though he is not that good?

I think the German manager Michael Weiss included Nate Burkey in his side not only by sheer skills, experience but knowledge of the game as well. Like fellow Fil - American Jason Sabio, he is also involved in coaching football to younger kids.

www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/soccer-insider/post/2014-world-cup-qualifying-is-underway-and-philippines-hero-is-american-nate-burkey-from-alexandria/2011/06/29/AGtkshrH_blog.html2014 World Cup qualifying is underway, and Philippines hero is American Nate Burkey from Alexandria By Steven Goff Less than a year since Spain’s crowning achievement in South Africa, qualifying for the 2014 World Cup has begun in CONCACAF and Asia. Although these preliminary matches involve teams with little hope of reaching the final tournament in Brazil, the pursuit provides a wealth of story lines, such as Montserrat, a Caribbean island that was nearly obliterated by a volcano, playing its home leg against Belize in front of 100 spectators in Trinidad and Tobago. And then there is the Philippines, which earned a 1-1 draw at Sri Lanka on Wednesday on a 50th-minute header by an American forward, Nate Burkey. Burkey, 26, is from Alexandria, Va. He played at T.C. Williams High School, Louisburg (N.C.) College and Virginia Commonwealth University. After tryouts in Belgium and Bulgaria, he played in Washington area amateur leagues while teaching at Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy, a public charter school in Northeast D.C. For more..... His mother has Filipino roots, which made him eligible to represent the country on the international level. With family assistance, he reached out to the federation, joined semipro Kaya FC and was named to the national squad ahead of training sessions and tuneup matches. The Azkals (street dogs) have never qualified for the World Cup or Asian Cup and are currently No. 29 of 46 in FIFA’s Asian rankings and No. 159 of 207 in the world. (They’ve never risen above 150th.) They didn’t enter the 2006 or 2010 World Cup qualifying tournament. As one of the weakest teams in the region, Philippines was among 16 Asian sides required to play in the first stage. Following the away draw with Sri Lanka, in which Burkey entered in the 40th minute and departed in the 76th, the Azkals are preparing for the return leg Sunday in Manila. The survivor will advance to the 30-team second round and play Kuwait in a two-leg series in late July. __________________________ We must be doing something right if we get news of our players on the online edition of the Washington Post, the US capitol's preeminent paper. I have read Steven Goff's Soccer Insider articles in the past to find out news on the US soccer scene, but I never thought I would read about the Azkals or any of our players. Amazing.

I think he can play as a defender?
He looks a bit like Aly also.

So playing for Kaya FC is playing professional football? Hmm when did the UFL teams start to pay big bucks to the players?

OK, quick question. What do Nate Burkey, David Nugent and Francis Jeffers have in common?

Dunno why some put this kid down. He did score a goal when we needed it, and yes being in the right place at the right time is a skill in itself I think(about his goal). He seems to be passionate about playing the game and definitely has the size to compete. Average speed can be compensated for by skill and on field awareness. I think this kid is serviceable as a reserve player and is young enough that he most likely is still learning and improving. I have the same feeling for the kid Sabio. Not starter material (yet) but definitely an asset. Until they F up badly in a game, Ill think positive until then.

Who is putting him down? If you mean me, that wasnt my intention. I only asked when the UFL did become a professional league.
I bet Burkey will get alot of playing time in the upcoming tournaments, like the Long Teng Cup. He needs more international exposure, and its the perfect timing to get some experience against Macau and Chinese Taipei. Sabio definetly needs more experience as well.
