There's a reason why immigration attorneys make a good living. One thing that I don't think has been mentioned at all is the fact that Holland and Indonesia enjoy a unique relationship. Indonesia was a Dutch colony that didn't gain its independence until 1949. My assumption is there MIGHT be some nuances in the laws of both countries that make de facto dual citizenship possible. I have a 1st cousin who lives near Amsterdam who's been married to a Dutchman for close to 40 years. She's always been mistaken as Indonesian, especially in the earlier years. Renouncing ones citizenship in not an easy decision, especially if you have property and business interests in the mix.

That's right jimsar, it's not an easy decision to make. Particularly for those in Western European countries, not only property or business interests are at stake, there are also social benefits and privileges they won't be able to access once they are no longer citizens.
I think one key point we can look at is what do Dutch laws say. Take our country for example, we allow our citizens to reacquire their citizenship after they have been naturalized as a citizen of another country (RA 9225). I've experienced a case where a Filipino reacquired his Filipino citizenship barely two months after being naturalized as an American citizen.
I know some Latin American countries have laws wherein even if you get naturalized as a citizen of another country, they still recognize you as one of their own, as a dual citizen.
As cj said, let's wait and see though in the meantime, Mulder sis currently ineligible.

I didn't think of the "social benefits", indeed they're very important when you become a senior citizen. Some countries provide free medical care, long term care, pensions, etc for seniors.

This is regarding Dutch citizenship Exemptions to the requirement to renounce foreign citizenship
An applicant for naturalisation does not have to give up his current nationality in the following cases: - where the original nationality is automatically lost upon naturalisation as a Dutch subject
- the legislation of the applicant's country does not allow renunciation of nationality. For example, under Greek Law
- the person is married to or the registered partner of a Dutch national.
Look at the first and third bullets. The way I see it, Paul Mulder's mom never lost her Filipino citizenship and therefore Paul is a Filipino citizen. Invite this guy to the camp! We cannot let this guy go. Pull out all the stops to get him. Go Azkals!

It would depend upon each how each country's laws will look at it. Jerry Lucena had difficulty with Denmark's laws not allowing dual citizenship which stated that the act of acquiring another's country's citizenship, even without renouncing his Danish citizenship is grounds for losing his previous citizenship. He was able to find a loophole in the law somehow which allowed him to play for us. As narko said in azkals prospect thread " if Paul Mulder's mother got naturalized as a Dutch citizen by the time Paul was born then Paul isn't eligible for Filipino citizenship. The process of naturalization causes you to lose your citizenship." Hopefully they can argue that since Paul's mother never lost her Filipino citizenship since she never renounced it, she was in effect still a Filipino citizen, and Paul is therefore entitled to dual citizenship at any age. they need to get a good immigration lawyer to argue this for them.

Now we're on to something here. If Paul's mother or their lawyer can effectively claim that the exemption (as found out by xyz) applied at the time of her naturalization as a Dutch citizen, then that would make Paul's mother a dual citizen when Paul was born.
It is our authorities here, especially our Bureau of Immigration that will need to be convinced of this fact. If they accept that situation and recognize that Paul's mother did not lose her Filipino citizenship due to this exemption in the Dutch law, then the next step is simply for Paul's mother or Paul himself to conduct a late registration of his birth at our Embassy in the Netherlands so his Filipino citizenship can be formally recognized. He is a dual citizen and is therefore entitled to have a Philippine passport.
