SIX equally talented teams start their title hunt today, Saturday, in the men's open, while nine other teams compete in the age group competitions as the First Mayor Mauricio Domogan Football tournament kicks off at the Melvin Jones football field.
It will be the first month-long football tournament to be played all weekends of July in the tournament backed by Goshen Land Capitals in cooperation with the Baguio United Football Club.
Competing in the men's side are the national men's open national finals bound BUFC-Goshenland, Philippine Military Academy, Benguet Alumni FC, Benguet State University Varsity, Hard 11 and Baguio City National High School.
Seeing action in the age group competitions will be Melvin Jones Academy, Pinsao FC, New Life, Small World Christian School Foundation, Northwestern University, Soccer Achievers, Brazil, BSU and BCNHS.
Prior to the start of the tournament, there will be an 11-a-side exhibition match featuring Pinsao Football Club and Baguio City National High School in their g-strings for a 20-minute game opening 9 a.m.
"The football cup will be an arena for public school children and other teams to have a competitive football tournament to enhance their character and football skills," said Goshen Land chief executive officer Alex Bangsoy during Monday's tournament.
The age group competitions will include the 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8 under age group categories, while the registration fee is pegged at P1,000 for the men's open. All other categories will be at P500.
Onsite registration will start at 7:30 a.m.
Unknown to many, Baguio produced national-caliber football players even before the Azkals rose to fame several local talents where recruited by scouts from Ateneo, La Salle and other universities in Manila to play for their respective football squads in the UAAP.
Baguio's Cinderella Ladies' Football Team was of course a bright spot in the city's recent football history. Up until now, scouts still come up to Baguio to look for promising football players.
Just this June, the whole high school football team which represented Baguio and the Cordilleras during this year's Palaro was taken in as full scholars at the Lyceum of the Philippines in Manila. They were trained by former Ateneo football players and now coaches Aris Bocalan and Gatan Dalang.
