This is just an example of being regionalistic, which is one of the bad traits of Filipinos. We often categorize ourselves by using terms as probinsyano , local or homegrown, manilenyo etc. But in the end, this just hampers the growth of a unified nation.
Nevertheless, I will never put Chieffy in the starting eleven against Kuwait if we plan to have a more defensive strategy for the 1st leg. That’s probably one of the reasons why he was benched during last year’s Susuzi Cup.
We need someone that has speed and a more defensive minded player. However, 2nd leg is a different story.

I found this facebook post by Kaya FC www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=244448008899396the line that I like most is "I would rather be Filipino by choice than by right!" But anyway, I can't help but think that maybe we're just overanalysing what Caligdong said.

Chieffy's been captain before. Weiss (and hey, previous Azkals coaches) puts him in the starting 11 for good reason. He knows how to play football and he plays it well. And now he has the captain's armband once more and I believe the team supports that move, otherwise we would have heard something far more concrete and non-speculative by now. We'd be screaming for a better PR officer until everyone in the PFF and Dan Palami's crew's ears would bleed.
While Chieffy's interviewee tact and versatility are probably not his strongest suits, that's not why we love the guy. And I do get the feeling his statement is being overanalyzed.
Also (ahem) there is rule #1 of this forum. I don't know if anyone crossed that line yet as I haven't read the previous posts. But let's support our team, nonetheless, as they probably need it more than ever.

I would rather be Filipino by choice than by right!
indeed it is good hear that....the only problem is some of us "filipino by choice" but the way they show it is western thinking (some of it).....a bit broad to me....hehehehe

My memory is admittedly not-as-good-as-it-used-to-be, but wasn't Chieffy not starting in the last Suzuki Cup because he was recovering from injury?
But yeah, I might be wrong. And while I believe he's a real workhorse on the pitch, there are better defenders. However, his retention in the starting 11 may mean something strategically.

All I can say is it is a good thing we have a foreign coach who can play the best players without favoring a group or a region. Back in the day, national team coaches tended to favor players from their region over others including our players based abroad. We need to field our best team regardless of where they come from.

i'm glad the half-pinoys are being silent with this issue.kasi ayaw nila palakihin ang gulo. eh paano yan if napuno na ang mga yan and phil speaks to the media saying if some of the players think that we half pinoys don't deserve to be in the team then why don't they tell it straight to our face so we right here and now we'll leave this team and country for good.it seems they don't appreciate the fact that we have sacrificed so much to play for pilipinas.being away from our home family and loved ones.they ignored all those just because for them we just aren't pinoy. pag di na makagpigil mga yan, malaking gulo to. Well said!!

Hopefully somebody will post here the whole transcript of Chieffy's interview, but with his statement of being the only "pure pinoy" is really not good to the the ears specially for his foreign based teammates. Wrong choice of words.
I agree with Chicharito that some of us here really belittled Chieffy with their own choices of words and name calling, it aint productive.
and I agree most of you that the team (not only Chieffy) should be more careful with their interviews.
GMA 7 (Soho and Trinidad) should be more professional, it aint helping the football team digging up stories that are already been solved.

i hope pure and half pinoys don't matter anymore. look at the Germany NT. they had so many players that are not really pure German. like Miroslav Klose, both of his parents are Polish, Cacau was born in Brazil and i think he is a pure brazilian too, Lukas Podolski is half Polish-half German, Mario Gomez is a spanish-german and etc. i think by having a pure and a half in a national team is not a problem
