Look on the bright side Coach Weiss, Filipinos now care a lot more about football and think they know more than the pros, just like citizens of any football-mad country. To me, what all this backseat driving signifies is that there is passion and interest among the fans and supporters, and that is good for the growth of football.

Well just wanted to mention this article about a US player, Michael Bradley, not taking too kindly to criticism inspite of the fact that US media do not criticize national team players and coaches like traditional football countries do. This is important in light of his father, the US coach Bob Bradley being fired today. Bob in general had to endure questions about nepotism, so he never answers questions about his son and had to develop a thick skin. sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/andrea_canales/07/14/mbradley.incident/index.html?sct=sc_wr_a1Quote : After all, news coverage of the U.S. team, even given their poor results of late, is hardly scathing. While players in other countries are celebrated, yet also hounded and critiqued daily by both fans and journalists alike, with every move analyzed and second-guessed, American players are still largely anonymous in their own country. This relatively lenient attitude applies to the coach as well but the US team's dismal record of late finally along with this contoversy with his son, etc. led to Coach Bradley getting fired. I remember reading some time ago about the coach of the Brazilian national team complaining about how his selection of players for the seleccao is being criticized by everyone, from media to the man in the street. He said that even if Brazil were allowed to field 2-3 different national teams in the tournament, no one will be satisfied as everyone has an opinion about who should be in the team or not.

With regard to criticism: While everyone is entitled to give his/her opinions, I think what's important is that there is a time and place for criticisms. Constructively, it should be given that the respect of the person and his/her position is still there.

The last thing we need is a compliant press that's afflicted with the Sgt Schultz Syndrome (I see nothing, I hear nothing ... ) As fan base sophistication progresses, so will the level of scrutiny. It's all part of the game, like it or not, that's just the way it is worldwide. Philippine media and fans cannot be expected to be different.
