If I were GMA 7, I'd go offer the UFL a TV deal. It's not the Azkals, but a number of Azkals ply their trade there. Besides, ABS-CBN has an exclusive on the national team, they might as well take a risk and invest in the UFL. By taking that step, they help highlight and make football more available to the people. Help create further momentum and generate wider interest.
Considering that Smart Communications put in a lot of money to help set up a league, then let ABC5 jump in and cover those games too. They are both Manny Pangilinan companies.
They should also consider doing local coverage of regional and provincial meets and tourneys also, catered for the local audience. It may not be big, but it's a market nonetheless. This way, instead of waiting for the market to grow big enough for them to jump in, they themselves help grow that market they are after. It's a chicken and egg scenario so I say to these networks, go and take the plunge.

As we know, wala tayong matinong local sports channel that shows local sports. We have Balls and star sports, but largely mga foreign sports ang nilalabas dito. Weird isn't it? I've been love to watch local sports leagues, like URCC and UFL very much.

As an interim captain for the upcoming 1st Leg against Kuwait, it's sensible for him not to disclose what the real game plan of Coach Weiss (assume Coach Weiss already had one and already discussed it with the team) in front of our media. simple yet unassumming remarks like "we will give our 101%" will suffice Media's vanity for sensationalizing things.

It appears that Francis Santiago himself got a little irritated to one of the readers of his article "Azkals still Lack Killer's Instinct" (http://mb.com.ph/articles/325405/azkals-still-lack-killers-instinct) that he himself actually replied to one of the comments on his article:
CommentsWed, 07/06/2011 - 19:08 FRANCIS SANTIAGO
In my story I said: "Weiss, though, BELIEVES the team could have scored more goals had it not been for some ‘selfish plays’ by some players."
It means that coach Weiss told that to me.
To satisfy your cravings, here is the direct quote from coach Weiss: Do you think the team could have scored more goals? “Absolutely. Absolutely. If you see Araneta selfish…”
I don’t want to name names in my story that’s why the sentence went general in nature. I want to protect the player. Eh mapilit ka.
Like Dhon Buenavista, you forced me to spill out the beans.
The selfish player Weiss is referring to is IAN ARANETA. ==============
Wed, 07/06/2011 - 18:01 FRANCIS SANTIAGO To xLordiex
By Francis Santiago
My intention was to make the sentence general in nature. I wanted to protect the name of the player. But if you want to know him, here's the direct statement by coach Weiss.
"Chieffy and Phil are the most outstanding players for me in the match. Still, we can be much better if we leave alone selfish dribbling from the strikers. Without mentioning names it's really obvious," said Weiss.
Do you think the team could have scored more goals?
Weiss said: "Absolutely. Absolutely. I mean if you see Araneta selfish..."
So Chieffy is not who Weiss referred to as ballhog but Ian.

the quote that was included in the article said some players, meaning not only one. that direct quote was included because there were no names stated. the direct quote that wasn't included because he specified a name was the author's way of saving that player from being humiliated. pero dahil sa comments ng readers nilabas niya na ang quotes na di niya pinalabas sa article. as we can see weiss said players. sa unpublished quote he mentioned araneta kasi his ballhog was sunod2x. pero it doesn't mean di niya nakikita ang pambwaballhog ng ibang players like chippy and phil.its just that pinapalampas niya kasi those players are able to make up for it afterwards. chippy's saving grace from being totally in weiss radar is because after naka quota na siya tumigil na siya sa pambwaballhog at pinapasa na ang bola. kay phil naman yung pambwaballhog like di pinapasa kay jyh na open is totally different kaya araneta wherein phil still has a chance to score while yung kay araneta walang-wala talaga. then later on weiss added we can't afford those mistakes, so if he meant ian only does it mean solved na tayo sa mistakes na mga yun against kuwait?it doesn't stop from ian. weiss was saying he wanted unselfish plays, look for the open man. ian and cippy's case is due to the intense desire to show that they are as good as the fil-fors even if costs our team because the gameplan isn't followed.we could afford those mistakes and wasting chances against srilanka because their attack isn't that grest. but do those mistakes and waste your chance against kuwait and our team will pay dearly for it. phil's case is about lack of trust sa kanyang kapatid.i know dumaan na tayo sa ganyan kahit sa basketball din na we'd rather shhot the ball or force our way in rather than pass the ball to our brother.ba't ko nsabi na ganyan ang case kay phil?kasi pag si jyh ang open, di niya pinapasa.pero pag si guirado ang open, pinapasa niya.

Aren't we speculating here. You cannot call it outright pambaballhog just because some made a shot instead of making an extra pass to an open man who has more goal-scoring opportunity. It's can either be a mistake, or a lack of communication or lack of peripheral awareness which all happens in any team sport.
What Weiss didn't like, in my opinion, is Ian's ball-hogging. His inaccurate/poor shots and indecisive moves manifested his eagerness to score a goal for himself, hence playing selfish, on several occassions:
1.) 64:12 to 64:15 minute - Chieffy was on a breakaway while Ian is tail-gating closely behind Chieffy. Chieffy was fouled inside the penalty box however Ian skipped over Chieffy and took that shot which was block. The referee should have awarded us the penalty but was overruled because Ian continued to attack and took the shot. Although for me, I can forgive Ian for this since striker instinct might have kicked in on that moment (yun nga lang I wished he is a clinical and excellent finisher, then sana goal na uli natin kaso hindi eh..) but notice Darren Hartmann's comment: " If Ian should have stop running....".
2.) 81:42 minute - He should have crossed it to James Y instead of making that very poor shot. Clearly a selfish play.
3.) 85:35 to 8:40 minute - Ian ballhog moments. He forced his way through a wall of Sri Lankan defenders only to get dispossessed.
Clearly, Francis Santiago already stated who Weiss is pertaining to as the selfish aka ballhog player. And according to Weiss it's not Chieffy but Ian.
See? So before spouting any derigatory, personal attack on someone be sure you get the fact straight and dig into the real juice of the story. Unfair naman kasi dun sa tao tinitira mo.
For that matter, as proper forum courtesy/etiquette we should refrain from posting derigatory statements, racist statement, "ad hominens", or any personal attacks on someone which deteriorates the quality of a thread.

They all (Ian, Chieffy, Phil, Angel and JYH) have their own shares of "pang-bwaballhog", but the most obvious and ruined Coach's game-plan was Ian.
I am purely speculating but taking context from Chieffy's interview, he was a bit protective about the homegrown playing time, specifically Ian. Judging from the reactions of the players (specially JYH), they are really complaining about Ian's eagerness to goal neglecting to pass (since before he scored against Bangladesh). Maybe that's the reason why Weiss chose Nate to come-in first before Araneta on the first leg.

Perhaps Coach should tell the players to stop practicing "ballhog", football is about team work otherwise he will not 'em play. Being a striker is not always the guy who will be scoring. Ian reminds me of Kobe Bryant of the past (#8) but Kobe changed now and so his no. (#24).

I don't like it that name of the player was divulged. Francis Santiago, in my opinion, did the right thing by not mentionaing the player, thereby 'protecting' him from being pillorized in public. Until the revelation, everything was just haka-haka. I always believed that some things simply need to stay within the team. Let those things be discussed in the locker room, and should stay in the locker room. Unless .... it was intentional from Coach, I assume as a means to 'teach' someone a lesson? But then again, haka-haka ko din yan. I hope no bad thing comes out of it, rather, everyone gets to learn. PEOPLE, the Azkals is not the same old Azkals that no one cares about ... so everyone need to start being politically correct??? My 2 cents ...

(12:20) You'll see here when JYH and PYH run for the ball and few seconds later JYH dismayed and gave the ball to PYH.
Is PYH is the deisgnated penalty kicker for the Azkals?

Im also a bit concerned how the media is hyping up Chieffy Caligdong. Hes not that good to begin with and both of his goals were lucky. He cannot even score a goal in the AFC Challenge Cup where he was most ballhog. Hes only toned down now because of a closed door reprimand by the coach.
Its bad that young football aspirants will want to emulate Chieffy. They should emulate work horses like James Younghusband and Angel Guirado. Look up to them, not at Chieffy.
Lets see him try to get one past the keeper against Kuwait. And if he really thinks hes good, why doesnt he go to Europe and try out with 3rd division teams.
