Black Cats young prospects can be Premier players YOUNG CAT: Adam Reed. Picture by Corrina Atkinson Published on Wednesday 25 July 2012 13:47 MARTIN O’Neill believes Sunderland’s young prospects have what it takes to become fully-fledged Premier League players. But he says that whether or not they do so, is entirely down to them. The Sunderland manager took a youthful squad to South Korea after deciding to rest six international players and losing others to injury. In all, 10 members of the 23-man squad who flew out to take part in the Peace Cup, could be classed as rookies. Jordan Pickford, Ben Wilson, Billy Knott, Louis Laing, John Egan, Ryan Noble, Adam Reed, Craig Lynch, Blair Adams and Roarie Deacon all made the trip. And eight out of the 10 were involved at some stage in the two games played 12,000 miles away. But all of them impressed the manager who was able to get a closer look at the club’s younger players in relaxed circumstances. He told SportMail: “I’ve enjoyed watching the young players train and play and it was great to get the opportunity to do so. “I’ve been with them for quite a few months now, since Christmas-time, and it was nice to be in that environment over in South Korea, particularly with them working with the first team. “I always had it in my mind that the Peace Cup would be a chance to see some of the younger players and the players who didn’t get to play that much football last season and, in the event, it proved to be exactly that. “I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen and in terms of them going on be Premier League players, I don’t see why not for many of them. “I’ve always been under the belief that if you’re good enough, you’ll eventually come through if you’ve got the willpower and desire. “And I don’t see why that should be any different with this young bunch of players.”

O’Neill to give Sunderland prospects a chance in Peace Cup in Korea PEACE CUP TRIP: Adam Reed Published on Monday 16 July 2012 12:30 MARTIN O’Neill will give youth a chance this week. And fringe players too, including Hartlepool-born midfielder Adam Reed, will get an opportunity to catch his eye as the Cats contest the Peace Cup in Korea.
The Sunderland boss flew out from the North East today without many of his natural first team squad on board. And that has put an emphasis on the young prospects and those hoping to stake their claims for next season. “I said before the end of the season that the Peace Cup would be an opportunity for a lot of players to get more involvement than they had done previously,” O’Neill told SportMail. “And it has turned out, we’re taking a very youthful squad out there and they will get a chance to show what they can do. “One or two of the young lads might not get to play in the games but that shouldn’t matter too much – the fact is that the trip and the experience will benefit them and they’ll have the chance to work closely with the first team.” Sunderland will be without rested internationals John O’Shea, James McClean, Keiren Westwood, Seb Larsson, Stephane Sessegnon and Ahmed Elmohamady. Ji Dong-won will miss the competition in his home country because of his call up to the Olympic football squad while Phil Bardsley and Matt Kilgallon withdrew at the weekend with injuries. That will give great opportunities to the likes of Billy Knott, Louis Laing, John Egan, Craig Lynch, Adam Reed, Ryan Noble, Roarie Deacon, Jordan Pickford and Blair Adams, who trained with the first-team squad last week and headed out with the rest of the tour party today.

26/11/2012 20:54, Report by Adam Marshall U21s: United 2 Sunderland 2
Three goals inside two minutes and 45 seconds illuminated United's 2-2 draw with Sunderland in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League.
Marnick Vermijl and Ryan Tunnicliffe got on the scoresheet as Warren Joyce's team twice had to come from behind but qualification for the Elite phase of the competition remains in the balance despite moving into second place in the table.
The Reds suffered a pre-match blow when Davide Petrucci was forced to withdraw from the line-up and the soggy surface played its part in ensuring the first half was extremely disappointing.
Jordan Pickford had a nervous moment when spilling a Charni Ekangamene shot but he clutched it safely at the second attempt and it was the Black Cats who drew first blood on 10 minutes. Roarie Deacon cut in from the left to feed an unmarked Craig Lynch, who capitalised on the space to bury a low drive beyond Sam Johnstone.
Tunnicliffe's run led to Pickford pushing the ball away from his near post with difficulty and the keeper dealt well with Federico Macheda after the Italian displayed neat control. Adam Mitchell almost picked out Adam Reed after a Vermijl slip before United finally burst into life around the 33-minute mark.
Tom Lawrence beautifully picked out Bebe but the winger could only swerve his finish into the side-netting while, seconds later, Tunnicliffe volleyed against a post with a side-foot effort after Lawrence fed Bebe again and Macheda was unable to make a proper connection in the middle.
The second half was to provide more entertainment even though it started slowly with Michele Fornasier's important block after Deacon outstripped Frederic Veseli the only noteworthy incident until the game went goal crazy as the hour approached.
Vermijl, advanced from his left-back role, beating several defenders, and unleashed a stunning strike past Pickford for a superb solo effort, only for the visitors to instantly regain the lead. Johnstone saved Reed's initial header but could not gather the ball on the greasy surface and the Sunderland skipper pounced to smuggle it into the net.
Undeterred, United levelled again with substitute Angelo Henriquez's incisive pass allowing Larnell Cole to nudge into Tunnicliffe's pass and the midfielder claimed his first goal of the season with a sweet finish.
Pickford made a superb save to deny Tunnicliffe a second after he latched onto a Henriquez through ball but the Wearsiders looked just as likely to grab a winner as Johnstone made smart saves to keep out a Mitchell free-kick and a miskick by Macheda from a corner.
United: Johnstone; Veseli, Fornasier, Thorpe, Vermijl; Bebe, Ekangamene, Cole, Tunnicliffe, Lawrence (Henriquez 60); Macheda. Subs not used: Sutherland, James, McCullough.

Four goal show for U21s
Published: 03 December, 2012 by Kate Smith
Black Cats get better of Stoke City.
Sunderland U21s 4 Stoke City 1
Sunderland’s under-21 side were resounding winners when Stoke City made the trip to Wearside.
Titus Bramble had a shot deflected over the line to open the scoring for the home side in the first half, before second half goals from Adam Reed, Ji Dong-won and Fraizer Campbell were enough to seal the three points for Kevin Ball’s side.
Ball had named a strong squad for the clash with the Potters, with senior players James McFadden, Bramble and Campbell all handed starts.
It was a quiet opening 45 minutes, other than the own goal that put Sunderland in front, with neither goalkeeper being tested.
Both sides upped the tempo in the wintry north eastern conditions following the break with Sunderland doubling their lead when skipper Adam Reed converted from the spot after Campbell was brought down inside the area.
Korean striker Ji Dong-won was next to get his name on the score sheet with an effort from close range.
Before fellow front man Campbell gave City stopper Daniel Bachmann no chance as fired the ball into the back of the net to make it 4-0.
Moments before the final whistle Sunderland were denied a clean sheet as Potters’ striker Karim Rossi nabbed a consolation goal for the visitors.
Sunderland: Wilson, Marrs, Ferguson, Reed, Bramble, Oliver, Mitchell, Gorrin, Dong-won, Campbell, McFadden Subs: Laidler, Pickford, Harrison, Joyce, Deacon
Stoke City: Bachmann, Keane, Clarkson, Dawson, Heneghan, Parry, Williams, Richardson, Alabi, Rossi, Musungu Subs: Nardiello, Eve, Thomas, Glasgow, Campbell

Sunderland midfielder Reed clinches Pompey loan Adam Reed Published on Thursday 24 January 2013 18:21 by Graeme Anderson YOUNG Sunderland midfielder Adam Reed has joined League One side Portsmouth on loan. The Hartlepool-born 21-year-old will be eligible to play in Pompey’s next game – which is against Hartlepool United at Fratton Park this Saturday. Reed will be with the south coast side for an initial month-long spell, although his stay could be extended to the end of the season if it goes well. It is a big move for a player who has been with Sunderland’s Academy since the age of eight. He has been on Sunderland’s bench several times but never featured in a first-team game. He does, though, have Football League experience to call upon, having made 12 appearances during a loan spell at Brentford between February and May 2011. He was then loaned out to both Bradford and Leyton Orient in 2011-12, playing 15 games in total. The Echo revealed earlier this week that Sunderland were in the midst of a clear-out of young players including Blair Adams, James Armstrong and Reed, while the Sunderland futures of Craig Lynch and Ryan Noble were uncertain.

Portsmouth needs all the help it can get.
Unfortunate that he didn't make it to the reserves team, but then again he is young and this is a great chance to show what he can do. Wishing Adam Reed the best!

Weekend loan preview Published: 22 February, 2013 by Ashley Houghton We take a look at where loan stars are headed. Connor Wickham’s Sheffield Wednesday welcome Crystal Palace to Hillsborough as the Owls look to extend their Championship unbeaten run to seven. Wickham started his first game for Wednesday in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Birmingham and will be looking to grab his first goal for the Yorkshire side on Saturday. Ahmed Elmohamady will be looking to continue his impressive run of form for Hull City as the Tigers aim to close the gap on Championship leaders Cardiff to two points. Hull have won their last three and Elmohamady has played a vital part with two goals in his last three games. Elsewhere, Ji Dong-Won’s Augsburg face a crucial relegation six-pointer against Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga. Defeat for Ji’s side would see them fall four points behind their nearest relegation rivals. Meanwhile, Adam Reed’s Portsmouth travel to Oldham Athletic and Johnny Maddison will be hoping to feature for Crawley as the Red Devils travel to Leyton Orient in League One. Billy Knott is a doubt for Woking after picking up a hamstring injury in last Saturday’s defeat to Newport County. The Cardinals are at Southport this weekend.

Youngster Adam Reed admits he may have to quit Sunderland SET TO LEAVE? ... Sunderland's Adam Reed. By CHRIS YOUNG Published on Wednesday 13 February 2013 11:01 ADAM Reed admits he may need to leave Sunderland in the summer, regardless of his contract situation with the Black Cats. The Sunderland Under-21’s captain featured for Portsmouth in last night’s League One basement battle with Hartlepool United after joining the stricken south-coast club on an initial month-long loan three weeks ago. Reed’s contract at the Stadium of Light expires at the end of the season, and he is unlikely to be offered a new one, as he reaches the age where he must be registered for Sunderland’s 25-man Premier League squad. But after joining a fourth Football League club on loan, the Hartlepool-born midfielder says he wants to continue playing first-team football, and that may over-ride any contract decision from Sunderland. Reed, who has never made a competitive appearance for the Black Cats, said: “My contract is up in the summer and I’ve been out on loan a lot, so I’ve played quite a few league games now. “But then you go back and you don’t get an opportunity – so it gets a bit frustrating. “I know I will have to look at my future, and I will find out sooner rather than later whether they will offer me a contract or whether I want to find another club and play first-team football. “I’ve been there a long time, and it will be hard to make that decision if I decide to leave. “But every player wants to play first-team football once you’ve had that taste. “There is no better feeling than playing a proper game at 3pm on a Saturday. “To play in front of fans makes it a proper competitive game. It’s hard to go back to playing in the Under-21s when you have had a taste of that. “There is nothing like league football, and if I am meant to play at the highest level, I will get there.” Despite Portsmouth looking likely to be relegated to League Two, Reed insists he is enjoying his spell at the club. “I’ve been on loan at other League One clubs, but this is a massive club – the biggest one I’ve been on loan at.” added Reed, who has previously enjoyed stints with Brentford, Bradford and Leyton Orient. “I don’t mind travelling and playing for clubs if it is the right move for me.” Meanwhile, Reed’s Sunderland Under-21 team-mate Craig Lynch will not be signing on loan for Sheffield United. Lynch spent a week on trial with the League One side earlier this month and featured in an U21 encounter against Huddersfield. But Blades boss Danny Wilson has opted against making a move for the winger.

U21s held at the SoL Published: 11 March, 2013 by Ashley Houghton
Late equaliser cancels out Noble strike.
Sunderland under-21s drew their second consecutive game as Middlesbrough nicked a late point at the Stadium of Light.
Ryan Noble gave the Black Cats the lead just after half-time before Bradley Fewster equalised for Boro 20 minutes from time.
Kevin Ball made four changes to the side that drew with Everton a fortnight ago with first-team players Keiren Westwood, Phil Bardsley, David Vaughan and Adam Reed, who returned from a loan spell at Portsmouth last week, all getting some valuable match action.
Bardsley looked lively throughout the first-half and it was the Scotland international who created the first opening, carrying the ball 20 yards before passing into Noble who set for Craig Lynch who dragged it just wide.
Sunderland were largely dominant throughout and Lynch twice flashed wide after further good play from Bardsley.
Middlesbrough didn’t test Westwood until the last kick of the first-half, and, even then it was a tame 25 yard strike from Luke Williams.
The Black Cats broke the deadlock after just a minute of the second-half, Mikael Mandron closed down a back-pass, colliding with Boro keeper Jayson Leutwiler before Noble latched onto the looping ball to nip home.
Noble went close to doubling the hosts’ advantage ten minutes later but his low 20 yard drive was well saved by Leutwiler.
Boro began to push forward more as the half went on and went close to equalising on the hour, Adam Reech found space at the back post from Andrew Halliday’s cross but blazed over when he should have at least hit the target.
The visitors got their equaliser 20 minutes from time; Fewster beat the Sunderland offside trap and finished well past Westwood.
Middlesbrough may have grabbed a winner late on but Curtis Main’s left footed strike flew over from 20 yards.
Sunderland: Westwood, Bardsley, Ferguson, Vaughan, Harrison, Mangane, Reed, Laidler, Noble, Mandron, Lynch (Mitchell, 78) Subs not used: Marrs, Wilson, Gorrin, Honeyman.
