Thanks Buddha! I've been reading about this formation ever since(I think it was you) someone posted an SI.com article about it a few months ago. I've also seen it used by Fulham a few times. Once again you've given a truly clear and concise explanation about something of interest to me and maybe to others. To add: I think if we wanted to play defensive, we've got the personnel to play the "double pivot/with defensive posture" correct? But yes, it also seems to me 'time' is needed to play this formation well. Something most NT isn't privy too, like you mentioned. I learned a lot, gracias! Admin, mods How about splitting up the post above to it's own thread? Seems to me it would be a valuable addition to our website?Ok so we won't be too far out of topic, my dream team: probable point of contention:1)Ray Jonsson at DM. Why mid? Because he is a midfielder with Grindavik, has enough speed, is defensive minded. He is reliable and most importantly, he has played with Aly B, del Rosario and C. Greatwich so has a pretty good understanding of their tendencies and capabilities. 2)Angel as reserve for either James Yh and Mulders. Why? To we who have been following Angel, we know he cannot play the whole 90' because of his nagging injuries(or general fitness?), he'll be better used as a '6th man' to coin a basketball term. 3)Phil and James. Would you want to break up this partnership? 4) Chris Greatwich over de Jong and Ott. Veteran whos contribution to the team is well documented. Super subs Ott and de Jong. If only we can find out Juan Luis Guirados quality soon. It's alway good to have options on defense. Ok, now we're not OT Buddha... ;D I like this dream team, my only question is why Schrock at the back4? Isn't it we are going to give up too much quickness, dribbling, penetration and scoring options with Schrock at the back? You know better than me, mine is just conventional view.

Schrock should be on the midfield.. He's been utilized as a midfielder now in his club, also in Fifa12...

Schrock should be on the midfield.. He's been utilized as a midfielder now in his club, also in Fifa12... I posted that Jan 3. I have since changed my mind SS is better somewhere at mid. My reason is because I've always favored establishing a strong defense first and then building from there, I still favor this approach. I'd replace him with delRo rather than Carli though, provided delRo is back in his 2010/early 2011 form.

Regular flat 4-4-2 Lucena at the position he plays at with AGF Chieffy because his speed opens up opportunities. James Yh more of a defender type in my team plus its hard not to include him in the team as he has an innate connection with his brother Phil, box to box + when was the last time James had a bad game? Angel as super sub(we all now he is still not a 90' player from lingering injuries anyway). Ray sub for both L and R back Juani and Sabio, I honestly think Sabio is better now at CB, but Juani has the perfect height to defend high balls in the box against bigger opponents.

Full-strength Azkals still a dream By Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer 10:49 pm | Sunday, March 11th, 2012 KATHMANDU—The Philippines still longs for the day when it will have all the best available talent in the team for a major tournament. It didn’t happen here at the AFC Challenge Cup in this laidback city in the Himalayas. And team manager Dan Palami fears it may not happen soon. The Azkals were scheduled to play against a tough India side last night at the Dashrath Stadium, hoping to keep their semifinal hopes alive after dropping their first assignment against North Korea, 0-2. “Up to now, that has always been the biggest challenge,” said Palami of getting the likes of standouts Stephan Schrock, Jerry Lucena and Dennis Cagara released from their respective foreign clubs to don the country’s colors. “The players are actually willing to play, but the clubs will not let them,” said Palami, who remains hopeful that the Europe-based standouts will suit up for the next major tournament, the Suzuki Cup, late this year. Schrock, who scored a memorable goal in the 1-3 home loss against Kuwait in the World Cup Qualifier, is one of the stars of Greuther Furth in the German second division. The team is in a good position to vie for promotion to the prestigious Bundesliga and also made the semifinals of the German Cup. Lucena is attached with Danish club Aarhus, which told the Philippine Football Federation in early February that they will not release the midfielder for the Challenge Cup. Cagara recently signed with FSV Frankfurt, making his debut for the German second division club last Saturday. Striker Denis Wolf plays in the fourth division in Germany and, although he could have been available for this tournament, he wasn’t able to participate because he didn’t get his Philippine passport before the deadline. Clubs are only inclined to release players for Fifa international dates, and the Challenge Cup does not fall in the calendar. Neil Etheridge of Fulham and Paul Mulders of ADO Den Haag in the Dutch first division were released for the tournament, boosting the Azkals’ artillery. “The significance (of our tournaments) is sometimes lost in the clubs,” said Palami. “But we are taking steps so that they will be able to join tournaments that are actually in the Fifa calendar. “We just have to resort to getting on the good side of the clubs to release players.” Because of this problem, Palami said it is important to form a strong local-based core. “We always have to work on the assumption that they are not coming (for major tournaments),” he said. Another option is to convince Filipino players based abroad to play in the United Football League. Palami signed up Rob Gier and the Spanish trio of Juan Luis Guirado, Angel Guirado and Carli de Murga to his UFL club, Global FC, so it can spend more time training with the national team. “It’s difficult to absorb the costs,” Palami said. “I talked to (UFL chair) Santi (Araneta) about distributing the (European-based) players to different clubs so it would be easier for us to gather the core together.” sports.inquirer.net/37485/full-strength-azkals-still-a-dream

A standard 4-4-2 with the wings overlapping on attacks.. with almost everyone having good 1st ball touches & a creative midfield we could maintain ball possession. A short passing game or long balls can be very deadly. Subs: Muller A. Guirado De Murga Chieffy Bahadoran Angeles

I believe Philippines is going up. Comes 2015 Asian Cup in Australia which hopefully we will qualify, names like Kevin Ingreso, Adam Reed, Luke Woodland and Iain Ramsay will be donning Azkals uniform.

In light of our latest debacle worsened by those suspensions and shallow pool of substitutes, I think it would be better if we list our 1st choice/2nd choice/3rd choice for each position, so it'd be easier for us to know which players can sub for a certain player that is unavailable/injured/suspended/etc.
Example: GK: 1st choice: Neil Etheridge, 2nd choice: Roland Muller, 3rd choice: Extra Rice
Etc., down the line...

Wow, Sabio's a revelation in the backline. If he's around I'd even think about putting Aly in defensive mid. I'm super impressed with Jason the past few months!

I can't wait until they schedule a friendly on a FIFA Match date. We are going to be very deep and very strong. Too bad we don't have an experienced coach to put it all together but whoever we will face during the Independence day exhibitions will have a fight in their hands.

Too bad we don't have an experienced coach to put it all together but whoever we will face during the Independence day exhibitions will have a fight in their hands. I go with you about your current assessment of coach Michael Weiss. Following an assortment of elements, trends and factors in sport for years have given me the rational wisdom that Coach Michael Weiss, yet very knowledgeable about football, is more better a football director than a coach/manager. My hats off to coach Michael Weiss in this AFC Challenge Cup, but I just firmly believe that a coach who has lesser foundation than coach Weiss but has more actual experience on the pitch could have sealed the game for the Azkals. But a word of caution, there are people that blooms quite late, which means that Michael Weiss may just be starting to catch with his full potential, who knows, he might reach his best brilliance in the Suzuki Cup this year.
