Cedelf Tupas tweeted earlier that Coach Weiss made James Younghusband as Central Defender on practices of Azkals.. coach said James has a potential to succeed in that position.
AGREE.. we all saw James defensive skills in the Kuwait match and its quite good.. also James played as a defender back then in Chelsea.. i think he has the height, skills, and experience to be a defender..

There are more available mids compared to fullbacks(especially CB) in the Azkal lineups, so I understand why the coach is doing this. I just don't understand why JYh. He seemed to be one of the more polished outside mids that we have, why not tryout someone who can't break into the line up in the mid position(NateB, etc.). Another thought also comes to mind; Is the coach not sold on Sabio(he's started there before) or anyone else to anchor the CB position in the absence of RobG? Is RobG on the way out? Even more intriguing, is there someone the coach sees who can replace JYh. Who's better than JYh at his old position??
I have to admit though, that I am not there during practices BUT the coach has my confidence, I'm hopeful he does the right thing.
@fadski, I think Angel would be excellent if moved back to his old position. He might be the one if ever this "moving" is done.

If JYH will be on the CB and Ott will not play, this is just what i'm thinking at coach Weiss' formation. ;D 4-4-2 on defense switch to 4-2-3-1 in offense. --------------R.Mueller------------- Carlos-----JYH--------Aly-----Anton Angel-----Jason----Lexton----Chiffy ----------PYH-------Nate--------

dan, Lexton has been playing outside back Stateside and in HK, he might be out of place there. You might have forgotten Misagh, he'd be better at mid methinks, he's also played in some of the internationals so more experience, diba? Unless, you were thinking of Moy as a stay behind defmid, sweeper type? So many possibilities now with all the new recruits and PI based local/foreign players. Great problem to have isn't it!!

Hi Wiking, yah i think so.. dami na nila kase.. ;D Beho maybe right that Nate is a bit raw infront, perhaps will see more of Ian since he was the top goal scorer on last year edition and Nate or Misagh as an attacking midfield.

Playing James at CB is a very interesting experiment. Could be a useful option when Rob is not around and we are loaded with MF options.
JYH does have experience playing at the back but it was at RB which is quite a bit different. His work rate is unquestioned but the key to any good CB is how well he gels and communicates with whoever is next to him. Would be interesting to see if he and Aly compliment each other. One thing is for sure having to CB's that are very comfortable with the ball on their feet and possess great passing/distribution range is a huge asset. That's like having any combination of Pique, Nesta, Carvalho or Rio being partnered together. Obviously Aly and JYH are not at that level nor are all the guys mentioned still in their prime but just dreaming.

Potschke can also play central back and is quite tall. Weiss like his performance at that position in the Nagold Cup. But if James can play central defence as well, and perform adequately defensively especially with his height, that would be awesome. as we can use his ability to provide passes from that position as well as keep possession the ball which is a big advantage at center back. Besides we now have plenty of alternatives in the outside mid positions and Misagh among other alternates, can finally get on the field in their preferred position.

my line-up would be like this.
-----------------R Mueller------------
Barbaso------JYH-------ALI------- Carli?
Angel-------MOY-----M.Hartman---Chiffy
------------PYH-------Bahadoran---------
You can interchange Misa with Angel or MoY with Angel during the game to confuse the oppenent.
Reason why I put them on that position?
1. If you saw Misa playing forward against the MNT, he burned the national team with his runs, even scored a break away. I can also see him as a winger, so you can switch him with Angel during the game.
2. MOY: I think he is solid in the middle, When he gets the ball in the middle he is relaxed good composure and passes the ball to the right person, short and long ball.
3. Hartman: The guy occupies space in the middle, distributes the ball well and can run with the ball.
4. JYH: One thing JYH is, is he works hard on the field Fast unlazy player, strong ang tall. We need that on our back.
5.Barbaso: You may raise you eyebrows on this, but from what I saw from the last 2 Global game. All left wingers of both Kaya and MNT was non existent coz this guy cover that part of the field well. Chieffy barley made any good runs last night. I cannot recall Chieffy making a good cross, Barbaso was allober him. This guy is fast and strong. They should put him back to that spot.
6.Carli; I have a ? sign on that spot coz Im not yet sure who to fill that spot. Not so impressed with Carli last night. That was just one game thou, cant read his game yet.

I think the Hartmann you're talking about is Mark (the one with hair), right? He's better there, but I'm more happy with him at the front. If you're referring to Matthew (the bald guy), I think I prefer him playing defensively.

In regards to Oliver Potschke, can someone please educate me about FIFA ruling on U23 players. OP is 23 already and/but I read somewhere that they can still play for an Under23 team if certain "conditions" are met. Is this true? Too bad OP didnt play in the Azkals game, would love to critic his play. Being an academy grad, he surely would be impressive to watch.
Thanks!

www.malaya.com.ph/sep26/sports6.htmlAzkals face slight changes in defense BY BONG PEDRALVEZ SLOWLY but surely, changes in the national men’s football team are taking place. In the Azkals’ recent workout at the Rizal Memorial pitch, German coach Michael Weiss, within everybody’s hearing, asked: "Tell me, who is the player not playing his normal position?" Out on the pitch, one player was obviously out of his usual spot: regular midfielder James Younghusband, 25, was playing defense at right fullback, a position long held by fellow Fil-Brit Rob Gier. "James seems to be right for the spot. He has speed, good field vision and is also strong," said Weiss of his decision to test the older of the Younghusband brothers at the backline. Football chief Mariano Araneta Jr., who once played for the national side, was one of those who suggested to the German mentor to try a different set-up after noting the slow reaction of the Azkals’ defense during their two-match Asian World Cup qualifying series against Kuwait. "The defense was a step slower to respond to Kuwait’s counterattack so I suggested to coach Michael if we could make some changes in the back row," Araneta said. At 30, Gier could barely keep pace with the relentless Kuwaiti attackers, Araneta observed. That explains why on that slightly overcast afternoon, James, who has played midfield most of his career, found himself in an unfamiliar spot, aligned with team captain Aly Borromeo in anchoring the defense. Watching from the sidelines, a small smile appeared on the usually serious German drillmaster’s face as he watched Younghusband perform on the field, apparently pleased with the tinkering he had done. Like a good soldier, the lanky Azkal resolutely played his role without complaint, although after the workout James said he preferred his old midfield position. ___________________ It looks like not only will James be a permanent fixture at center back, but his pairing with Potschke at that position will provide us a young pairing to take over the spots when Gier and Borromeo eventually retires or are sidelined. This is a great development. When I build a team, I always make it an emphasis to put my best players at the back, on defence. So given a choice bet. using him on defence and midfield, I would put JYH at centerback. It remains to be seen of course if he can hold the fort against international caliber opposition, but I am cautiously optimistic he can do a better job than our current starters because of his speed, height, vision, ability to hold the ball and passing ability. Because he is young, he still has time to learn how to play the centerback position, so any rough spots that eventually crop up can be corrected as he gets more experience.

Depth at the back is major concern because we already have a plethora of options in the middle and at the front. having JYH helps. hopefully, by the time our Kaya FC d'backs retire from int'l football, we already have their replacements on the ready.

Speaking of defenders, can't Weiss(since he is a German) find a player on the mold Matthias Sammer?
A player that can really play defense but if a very strong defense is not warranted, can comfortably play upfield and help on the scoring department?
Or are these type of players extinct? Maybe, Aly B. can fill that position since he had already played at the defensive and offensive end in his club.
