R. Gier (Ascot United FC)ASCOT UNITED 3 - Reading Town 0
A fine and deserved win for the Yellamen with a scoreline that was possibly not quite as comfortable as it looked, two of the goals coming in the last few minutes of the game. This was always going to be a tight game; Reading Town have been picking up points in the league recently and have clearly found a bit of form as they had some good chances in the first half, their midfield was quick to the ball and they worked it well from wide positions looking for the ever dangerous Lewis up front. The Yellamen had chances of their own, headers from Yeates and Bennett went over the bar following fine deliveries from Saunders and it was another header that finally broke the deadlock, Justin Clayton marking his debut with a goal in the 39th minute that allowed the Yellamen a one nil lead at half time. The second half was more comfortable, good pressure and calm defending; Clayton does look to be a really good signing. Bennett and Knight were a constant threat, Knight’s cheeky flick at the near post going just wide, Bennett with a lovely turn and shot that rattled off the bar, Saunders continually pushing the players forward to deny Reading Town the space to come out and Waddieh just all over the park making really timely tackles. This all paid off late on, Brooks picked up the ball in the centre circle, a slightly heavy touch took the ball away from him but he recovered to unleash a shot from all off 45 yards that caught the keeper off his line and all but finish off the game. Most thought that would be the end of it, fully expecting the lads to shut up shop and settle for the win and a place in the last 64 of the Vase, but Bennett had other thoughts, battling hard and sliding home the third from a tight angle in time added on. The Yellamen can now look forward to the draw for the third round on Monday but with a league game against Reading next Saturday will know from this game that they can’t be complacent. Before that though there is the visit of Thame United on Tuesday, another tough game following on quickly from the recent 2 – 2 draw. Team: Grace, Hancock, Yeates, Clayton, Boddy, Boon (Brooks), Lamb (Warren), Waddieh, Saunders, Knight, Bennett. Subs not used: Smith, Gritt, Mitchenson.
