Football school for kids set to open this summer To provide young football enthusiasts an environmentto learn and enjoy the sport, a football school for kids will open this summer at the Ayala Football Field in Talisay City.Luan Verder, one of the founders of the Explorers Football School, said the school is an offshoot of the growing popularity of football in the country stirred by the Philippine national men’s team, the Azkals. “Thanks to the Azkals, Negrenses have paid more attention to the sport in recent years and have become interested in making football as part of their children’s lives,” Verder said. While most of the football programs in the province are mainly for varsity players as provided by the schools, The Explorers Football School will cater to beginners and skilled alike, she added. As a coach-participant in the Asian Football Confederation C-License Course for Youth Football Coaching, coach Verder said they are planning to create football programs for children of all ages, starting with kids ages 3.5 to under 10 years old -- the “golden age” for learning the sport. Level 1 of the training is the Fun Phase for kids 3.5 to under 7 years old, and will focus on developing motor skills, dexterity, balance and coordination. Students will be introduced to basic football techniques through fun games and simple drills, Verder said. The second level will be the Foundation Phase for kids under 10 years old and will focus on developing basic football techniques with students being taught through small sided games, skill-building drills or exercises, and scrimmages. “The emphasis of Level 2 is placed on understanding the rules and etiquette of the game and development of teamwork,” coach Verder, who used to play for the Negros Occidental Women’s Football and University of St. La Salle as team captain, said. Assisting her in establishing the Explorer’s Football School is Canadian football coach Gordon Neilson, a former starting defender for Trinity Western University, Canada, and coach of Canmore, Alberta Canada Soccer Association Under-7 Youth. Neilson has also played for Surrey FC in the British Columbia Premier League from 1988 to 1991. Through the Explorers Football School, Verder and Neilson will offer fun, structured and well-organized youth football programs that are progressive and customized according to the children’s performance level. Verder said they will provide a dynamic learning environment for kids to learn the game of football, and at the same time, create life-long memories for a group of young athletes and their parents. “Our goal is not just to produce quality football players but also to set the tone for a lifetime of athletic enjoyment – to produce a generation of kids who love sports and are good sports,” Verder said.*NAB Link:http://visayandailystar.com/2012/February/22/sportnews1.htm

Gawad Kalinga, PFF launch enhanced grassroots football program
Reuben Terrado, InterAKTV · Thursday, January 5, 2012 · 11:39 pm The Philippine Football Federation has inked a partnership with Gawad Kalinga to further enhance its grassroots development program for underprivileged Filipino youth. Dubbed as “GK SipaG”, the program will get a big boost as it will also receive support from the Asian Football Federation, which will donate $25,000 a year to Gawad Kalinga. The GK SipaG program is an offshoot to Gawad Kalinga’s current efforts, which will be improved with the help of the PFF. A total of 500 kids, aged six to 16, from Gawad Kalinga sites in Baseco, Smokey Mountain, Taguig, Sitio Ruby, Pasig, Mandaluyong and Quezon City will undergo weekly values formation and football training. “We really like to work with them because of their track record,” said PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta during Thursday’s launch at the Amici Restaurant in Greenhills. “It’s a start of creating a grassroots development program for the youth.” Kevin Goco, volunteer head of GK SipaG, said that PFF and AFC’s help will get a big shot in the arm as it will get more kids to participate in the program. “This is a values formation program and it happens to be football. We are pleased that the PFF is recognizing our grassroots development program,” said Goco in the same press launch. The program is also in conjunction with several private and non-government groups including the Hanry V. Moran Foundation. Gawad Kalinga’s program has proven that it works as it already has a discovery strutting his wares in collegiate football. Alex Tayamora, a resident of the GK Sitio Ruby, was 12 years old when he joined the program. Now, he is on a football scholarship at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde proving that a true student-athlete can be discovered in such areas. Marlon Maro is the technical director of the GK Sipag and happens to be Tayamora’s coach at CSB. “He is playing in CSB not because I was the technical director of the program but because he met the academic requirements of the school,” Maro said. During the launch, Tayamora vowed to pursue his studies while playing football so that he can help his family. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/gawad-kalinga-pff-launch-enhanced-grassroots-football-program Looks like this program is moving forward: GK SipaG is in need of volunteer coaches. Here's a video report from ABS-CBN's TV Patrol about a matchup between Loyola and Kaya's U-10 team at the Turf@BGC. The two clubs, along with the others in the UFL, had been forming their youth academies during the past few months. Some members of the national team, who are on break, did their coaching job as part of the academies, including the YH brothers for Loyola, and Aly B and Anton delRo for Kaya. Notice that this report fully mentions UFL clubs! A great move to see considering rival network TV5 covers the UFL! The ironic thing is that I haven't seen that network cover the league and its games that much in their news coverage! (P.S. What's more, Dyan Castillejo's son Matthew is with Kaya! “We enjoy hanging out with these kids, we enjoy them having a laugh. We really hope they go on to have a future in the sport,” ani James Younghusband. “If they work, if they play well and if they have a good attitude, then they can earn a living through football,” sabi naman ni Phil. Mas maaga magsimula sa football mas maganda para maging natural ang mga galaw. “We want to get them more interested in the sport rather than teach them the technical stuff,” sabi ni Anton del Rosario. Hi there, I am from Iloilo City, specifically in Mandurriao. Although I am working here in Mandaluyong, Metro, Manila, I would be happy to see if there are football training camp for kiddies 5-and-up somewhere in Iloilo City; La Paz maybe or Mandurriao plaza... Please advise me ASAP if there will be a schedule for that... Thanks...

Azkals coach, players grace EIS footballTHE EUROPEAN International School (EIS) recently staged the EIS Football Cup as part of the year-long celebration of its 20th anniversary. EIS is home to the École Franéaise de Manille (EFM) and the German European School Manila (GESM). Teams from various schools and football clubs participated in three age categories: Boys 13, Boys 11 and Boys 8. All teams have the option of adding girls to their lineups. Young local and international footballers from Alabang Football School, De La Salle Zobel, Green Barons FC, Makati Football School, Manila-Japanese FC, Manresa School and Nomads Football Club gathered for this event. This one-day tournament was made even more special by the presence of Azkals head coach Michael Weiss and players Chieffy Caligdong, Patrick Reichelt, Carli de Murga and Misagh Bahadoran who gamely posed and signed autographs for the young athletes. Weiss, a parent at the GESM, intimates, "I am very happy with how Filipinos embraced football and the development that it has gone through in the recent past. Being invited by the EIS just proves that we are indeed on the right track. We want to be able to inspire the youth to follow their football dream. Who knows, they could be the next Azkals." "EIS is very proud to have staged this tournament. Football is very popular in Europe and it is no different at our school…," added Ethel Concepcion, marketing director for GESM. www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Sports&title=Azkals-coach%2C-players-grace-EIS-football&id=51339
