Booters face Timor in must-win game
BACOLOD CITY — Even though he’s only 20 years old, Philippine goalie Michael Louie Casas already has had his share of heartaches. He’s not about to let one more keep him down for long.
That’s why it is with a renewed amount of enthusiasm Casas is now looking forward to the Filipinos’ game against Timor Leste Tuesday in the Asean Football Championhip’s final qualifying round at the Panaad Sports Complex here.
"Babawi tayo," vowed the 20-year-old marketing student at perennial NCAA champion San Beda.
"We need to win against Timor to stay alive in the tournament at siguradong ibubuhos namin ang lahat para manalo tayo," he added.
A win will bounce the Nationals back from a 1-2 loss to Laos in the Asean Football Federation event last Sunday and keep them on track of their target of finishing among the top two in the five-team meet.
For its part, Timor lost defender Eduardo Pereira to a red card late in the first half and ultimately absorbed a 2-3 beating from Brunei later Sunday.
The Filipinos grittily battled the Laotians, highest-ranked here, to a scoreless tie in the first 47 minutes before conceding two successive goals.
Casas said it is the first goal, what should be an out-swinging kick from right-footed Sisomphone Sathongyot from the right corner that turned in and broke the ice that rankles at him and the entire RP squad, causing all of them to lose focus and concede a point-blank goal from veteran striker Visay Phaphouvanin a minute later.
"Fluke lang talaga ‘yung corner kick. Naghihintay na nga ako nang palabas, biglang pumasok," Casas reminisced with a shake of the head.
After regaining their bearings, the Filipinos dominated the match from thereon, but could only net a goal from Fil-Briton Chris Greatwich in the 62nd minute.
That’s why RP coach Aris Caslib could not hammer home the importance of Tuesday’s game against Timor enough.
"Our priority right now is to get the three points (for a win) over Timor," said Caslib.
