BACOLOD CITY — Phil Younghusband made a remarkable tournament more memorable by scoring two more goals Monday and leading the Philippines to a cherished goal.
The Fil-Briton’s scoring prowess complemented the entire team’s sterling all-around efforts, leading to a 4-1 victory over Brunei and into the realization of a treasured dream in the Asean Football Championship at the Panaad Stadium here.
With the victory, their third straight following an opening day loss, the Filipinos finished second in the five-team Asean Football Federation event and made it to the tournament proper of the biennial tournament formerly known as the Tiger Cup.
The Philippines wound up with nine points, just behind early qualifier Laos’ 10. Brunei wound up third with its second loss against a win and a draw. Cambodia (two points) and winless Timor Leste formally close out the tournament later in the evening.
There are additional perks for the RP XI.
Never in the post-war era has the Filipino booters won three straight nor scored as many wins. In the same vein, neither have they tallied so many goals for (13) nor limited opponents to just three.
"This is for Philippine football," said national coach Aris Caslib. "The boys should be credited, for they did everything within their powers to realize our dream."
Younghusband is clearly the darling among the RP Team, standing out most in a squad that has six Fil-foreigners who blended well with their homegrown teammates.
"I just wanted to do my part," said the 19-year-old with the matinee idol looks, who jacked his goals total to a tournament-best six by scoring on the 60th minute and just before the match ended.
The Filipinos, who needed just a draw and its one point to advance, actually started out tight, hurrying their shots and being erratic in some plays. But their defense was rock solid, however, giving the Bruneians no clear attempt in the first 30 minutes of the match.
Once the team settled down, however, their fire got more stoked.
Anton del Rosario actually started the rout by scoring on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 25th minute.
After Younghusband’s followup of his own missed header, Emilio ‘Chipi’ Caligdong came off the bench and promptly delivered a leftfooter inside the penalty box to make it 3-0 in the 73rd minute.
The Philippines’ second shutout win in the tournament was averted when Ak Mohammad Kamarul Ariffin swept a right-footer past RP goalie Michael Louie Casas following a disputed hand ball on James Younghusband.
