For your reference this will be the thread for discussing all Filipino national participants of non-football events of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Football events must be discussed on a separate thread in the Other International Football Teams board. Thank you. --stellarboy

Natalie Coughlin going to 3rd Olympics
1/4 Filipino swimmer Natalie Coughlin recently earned a spot in the USA 2012 Olympic Team. She'll be competing in the 4X100 freestyle relay. This will be her 3rd trip to the Olympics. She'll get a chance to add a medal to her hardware collection of 3 golds, 4 silvers and 4 bronze medals.
Although only a quarter Filipino, she had a healthy dose of Filipino culture as she was born and raised in Vallejo, California, a city of 115,000, where approximately 22% are Filipinos. The small Catholic elementary school where she went from 1st to 8th Grade had about 90% Filipinos at that time. We're rooting for Natalie, as my daughter was a year ahead of her at St. Catherine of Siena elementary school as well as at Cal.
Interesting that she wore a cap with her college logo (Cal) in the Olympic Trials. Cal is a university of about 50,000 students, known to some as home to "hippies", a reputation that's probably not undeserved. One Cal forum blogger tries to counter that reputation with the following signature:
70 Nobel Prizes, 9 Wolf Prizes, 7 Fields Medals, 15 Turing Awards, 45 MacArthur Fellowships, 20 Academy Awards and 11 Pulitzers. 16 chemical elements discovered-more than any other university in the world. 84 national titles in 15 sports including football, basketball, baseball, softball, crew, tennis, swimming, water polo, track and rugby. 235 individual national champions and 100 Olympic medals. There’s only one Cal and it’s in Berkeley.
