German FA in talks to help Philippine grassroots football development

The German Football Association (DFB) is in talks to help the Philippines develop its grassroots football program, Philippine national football coach Hans Michael Weiss revealed in a recent interview.
Weiss, a German national, said that negotiations are ongoing for the DFB to send and fund a technical consultant to the Philippines who will help develop grassroots football in the country. The DFB already assists the Azkals for training as well as scouting German-born players of Filipino lineage to play for the national team. Filipino-Germans Stephan Schrock and Manny Ott have both made their marks as part of the Azkals.
“We are trying to put everything into a good development program,” said Weiss, noting the surge in interest of young players in the sport.
“If you see the movement two years since the Azkals’ success has come to the country, it’s unbelievable what’s happening in the grassroots level. Young players really want to play football now.”
Last July, the Philippine Football Federation teamed up with the Department of Education for the grassroots program called KASIBULAN, which aims to encourage children all over the country from six to 12 years old to play football.
Weiss added that there needs to be more commercial support for the sport.
“What we need are local investors, and we are now in negotiations with really rich people and big companies to support this grassroots development program for the next five to ten years,” he said.
