PFF also joining Asian under-22 tournament next yearPublished on Monday, 26 December 2011 16:09 By Cedelf P. Tupas MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) will join one more international tournament next year, adding the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Championship Under-22 qualifiers to an already packed schedule for 2012. No venue or date has been announced yet for the tournament, but PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta Monday confirmed that the federation will be sending a team to the maiden staging of the event. “We want to join as many tournaments as possible,” said Araneta. The main tournament, which will have 16 teams, including the host country, is slated in 2013. Hoping to fill the competition vacuum after the Under-19 level, the AFC plans to make the Under-22 Championship a biennial event with the 2015 tournament doubling as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in 2016. The PFF’s busy schedule for 2012 also includes the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy competition in Brunei, where the country plans to send an Under-21 team in February as well as the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal and the Suzuki Cup for the Azkals. sports.inquirer.net/30045/pff-also-joining-asian-under-22-tournament-next-year

It looks like from this point on, the PFF will join every tournament it is invited to, a big change from the past when it skipped a lot of age group AFC tournaments. With the new sponsorships and TV contracts and the revenue from friendlies hosted, it has allowed the PFF to expand their schedule to the benefit of Philippine football.
I am glad this issue was addressed, since I criticized the PFF last year on several forums including this one, for not joining AFC age group tournaments last year resulting in a few heated replies from one of their officials. I emphasized at that time that the future of Philippine football, is in our youth and by not exposing them to international competition, we are doing them a disservice. I am happy they listened.

PFF should do his best to organise this little tournament . all we need is 3 good venues and with 6 teams it means 5 game days . to house 6 teams and their officials is also not a enormous problem . it would be a good experience for the PFF and could give a lot of support to our players .

For me, this is again a tough group, with majority of them are just neighboring countries from the AFF. Also we have South Korea as the team to beat, and Chinese Taipei that could be the dark horse in the group.
But, I'm optimistic that with our experience during the HBT, we can have hopefully have a decent run. I still believe that Coach Z can well adjust to it now.

They should now start creating the pool of players for this tournament. They maintain our HBT boys, the SEA games boys and also do some scouting in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.. with the UAAP football finished they won't have any problems pulling out some players. A good program, proper blending of players and match fitness of our players could be our key to this.

If they start training immediately, then our chances will be up as to build cohesion and improve the stamina of our players. We sucked during the HBT, the boys have the heart and determination but lacked the physical fitness to back it up.
