Azkals to play Indonesia; tickets on sale tomorrowby rick olivares This might be an international friendly but it is the home game that we never had during the 2010 Suzuki Cup. The Philippine Men’s Football National Team takes on their counterparts from Indonesia on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium at 7:00pm. Indonesia or Merah Putih (“The Red and White”) as they are nicknamed beat the Azkals by the aggregate score of 2-0 in both semifinal legs of the 2010 Suzuki Cup. The Philippines was supposed to play the home match of that home-and-away leg in Panaad, Bacolod, but because of inadequate facilities, the match was played at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Azkals were in the midst of a stirring run that saw them place second in Group B play with one win and two draws. The win, a 2-0 shocker, was against host team Vietnam, and the win, an upset of epic proportions that it made Sports Illustrated’s top football matches of the year, ignited the popularity of football in the Philippines that remains stronger than ever. The Philippines played a strong Indonesia side captained by Bambang Pamungkas that was backstopped by Indo-Dutch Irfan Bachdim and naturalized Uruguayan Cristian Gonzales who scored both goals against the Azkals. The semifinals finish was the best ever by the Philippines in the 14-year history of the biennial Southeast Asian football tournament. Indonesia lost in the finals to Malaysia by an aggregate score of 4-2. The Philippines are expected to be in full force with players like Neil Etheridge and Stephan Shrock available due to the end of the European football season. Based on their 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Indonesia could field a different lineup with goalkeeper Samsidar as captain. Irfan could possibly be the only one from the 2010 Suzuki Cup team who could be in uniform on June 5 as new coach Nil Maizar has opted to go with a more youthful lineup. Indonesia is currently ranked #151 by FIFA while the Philippines is at its highest ranking of #148 as of April 2012. This match might possibly be the only one the two teams could play this year as Indonesia faced the specter of suspension by FIFA due to government interference in the affairs of Persatuan Sepak Bolah Seleruh (or PSSI that is Indonesia’s equivalent of the Philippine Football Federation). FIFA has given the national sports association until June 15 to settle its internal problems or face suspension in all sanctioned matches. Tickets to the June 5 match will be available beginning Friday, May 4, 2012 at all Ticketworld branches. Ticketworld branches can be found in National Bookstore, Robinsons Department Store, Ayala Malls, Trinoma, CCP Box Office, Music Museum, Teatrino Promenade, Eastwood Mall, Resorts World Manila, or the Ticketworld head office in the Madrigal Building along Ayala Avenue, Makati City. Tickets are priced at Php 2500, 1000, 750, 300, and 150. bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/2012/05/azkals-to-play-indonesia-tickets-on.html

Is it affordable? I'd say it still is reasonable. No roster/training pool for the game so far yet? I'm assuming they'd be using the same roster for all our 3 friendlies scheduled this June.

Azkals-Indons match tickets go on sale Friday(philstar.com) Updated May 03, 2012 12:10 PM Comments (0) View comments MANILA, Philippines – Tickets will go on sale starting Friday for the Philippine Azkals’ first home match since their Cinderella run in the AFC Challenge Cup. The Azkals will have the chance to redeem themselves in front of their home crowd which they never had against their Suzuki Cup tormentor Indonesia on June 5 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. Indonesia defeated the Azkals in the 2010 Suzuki Cup semis by the aggregate score of 2-0 wherein Azkals were stripped off a home match due to lack of facilities that met international standards. However, that semifinals stint by the Azkals, which included a huge 2-nil upset of host team Vietnam in the preliminaries, triggered the resurgence of football in the country. The Azkals, fresh from a third place finish in the AFC Challenge Cup and sitting on its highest ranking ever at no. 148, are expected to be in full force with the match falling in the fixed dates of FIFA for international matches and the end of the European football season. Fil-Europeans Neil Etheridge, Stephen Shrock and Denis Wolf, Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucerna are tipped to bolster the squad that will also welcome back Aly Borromeo from injury. They will join forces with mainstays Phil and James Younghusband alongside Chieffy Caligdong and the Guirado brothers – Angel and Juan Luis – in what could be the strongest lineup ever for the Azkals to be assembled. Indonesia, currently ranked no. 151 in the world, could possibly show up with a different lineup since that 2010 Suzuki Cup where they lost to Malaysia Tigers in the finals with a 4-2 aggregate score. Tickets for the friendly match will be available starting Friday on all Ticketworld branches, which can be found in National Bookstore, Robinsons Department Store, Ayala Malls, Trinoma, CCP Box Office, Music Museum, Teatrino Promenade, Eastwood Mall, Resorts World Manila, or the Ticketworld head office in the Madrigal Building along Ayala Avenue, Makati City. Tickets are priced at Php 2500, 1000, 750, 300, and 150. www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=803218&publicationSubCategoryId=200

Indonesia hopes to get back on track vs AzkalsMonday, 14 May 2012 19:12 Rick Olivares / Columnist E-mail Print PDF WHEN the Azkals take on Indonesia in a June 5 friendly at the Rizal Memorial pitch, the match will carry a certain significance. As recently as 2010, Indonesia looked at the Philippines as “road kill” as the Jakarta Globe once infamously described that year’s Suzuki Cup semifinals matchup. While Indonesia dispatched the Azkals with a 2-0 aggregate win, the Philippines have since gained a measure of respect not just in the region but also throughout the world. The current No. 148 ranking by Fifa underscores that. While Indonesia has yet to win Southeast Asia’s most prestigious seniors football tournament, the Philippines is rapidly improving. But the Merah Putih, as Indonesia’s team is nicknamed, is in a state of turmoil and is under threat of suspension by Fifa if the country is unable to resolve its national sports association problems by June 15. Indonesia, a country of 240 million people, has long been recognized as a regional football power but has underperformed in the Suzuki Cup where it has been a losing finalist on three occasions with the 2010 tournament being the most recent disaster. The problems were compounded when a breakaway faction from the Persatuan Sepak Bola Seluruh Indonesia (PSSI) formed the Liga Primer Indonesia that saw the participation of 19 teams and the transfer of some of the Indonesia Premier League stars, including the popular Irfan Bachdim. Making matters worse was the controversial 10-nil loss to Bahrain in February where the gulf state needed a win by eight goals to advance in the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup. Indonesia lost its goalkeeper early on but given the circumstances, the match was placed under investigation as Bahrain needed at least an eight-goal win in order to progress to the fourth and final round of World Cup qualifiers. Indonesia saw its keeper sent off after only two minutes of play and Bahrain was awarded four penalties. In spite of the turmoil, Indonesia, currently ranked No. 151 in the world, is neck deep in preparations for the year-ending Suzuki Cup. The Merah Putih, under interim head coach Nil Maizar, while Santoso serves out his suspension, are scheduled to take part in a pocket tournament in Palestine before playing visiting Inter Milan in Jakarta on May 26. Irfan Bachdim is the only player from the 2010 Suzuki Cup team that played against the Azkals who is expected to make the trip to Manila. Other players such as Cristian Gonzales, who scored the two goals against the Philippines in that Suzuki Cup clash, as well as forwards Bambang Pamungkas, Yongki Aribowo; midfielders Oktovianus Maniani, Tony Sucipto, Ahmad Bustomi, and defenders Muhammad Roby and Benny Wahyudi are still available for call-ups. businessmirror.com.ph/home/sports/27108-indonesia-hopes-to-get-back-on-track-vs-azkals

Fair Play: Are you ready for Indonesia?(This is the draft of my Fair Play column for Sun.Star Cebu on May 26) SO, are you ready for the home match against Indonesia? I know some friends from Cebu are counting the days when they will return to the Rizal Memorial Stadium to cheer on the national team again, and so too, it seems the national team management. Aside from finally having that home game we never got to have in the 2010 Suzuki Cup, we are going to have one of the best lineups for quite some time. A dream team if you will. “We are going to have the best players we never got to have during the Suzuki Cup,” Dan Palami said. Among the players we didn’t have for that Suzuki Cup semifinals were Paul Mulders, who’s proven himself to have quite some ball control skills though he needs a few more practice shooting at the goal, Dennis Cagara, Stephen Shrock, Jerry Lucena among others. Dan mentioned a few of the first 11 options but one thing that he’s really excited about is having Germany-based Manny Ott, who first played for the flag in the AFC U19 qualifiers in 2009, and Stephan Shrock start at midfield and he’s hoping the absence of a language barrier would be a great boost would make them gel better. Captain Aly Borromeo, who has seen some action for Kaya FC in the past few games, may not suit up for Indonesia as team management thinks he’s not ready for the international match and doesn’t want him sidelined, again. Neil Etheridge will be back at goal and will be flying to Manila the day Roland Muller leaves for a vacation somewhere, to avoid a clash of, well, you know. But I don’t think the team has to separate the two, as I’m sure they won’t be immature enough to start a pissing contest and would probably go along with each other. Dan was pretty pissed with Neil’s one-game suspension as he thinks it wasn’t necessary. Neil, who wanted to seat with the fans for the third-place playoff against Palestine, was seated behind Dan and was pretty vocal when calls came against the Philippines. And can you just imagine hearing Neil scream? So, the fourth official got pissed, went to Dan and warned him to tell Neil to stop or he will include him in his match report. “I told him ‘but he’s already suspended and he’s not in the bench,’” he said. “But he’s still in the lineup. Control him or I will include him in the match report,” the official said. So Dan told Neil to pipe it down, and the goalkeeper did, but the darn match official still included Neil in his report, hence earning a one-match suspension and a $3,000-fine. “Had I known that, I would have told Neil to just continue,” he said. Dan also mentioned a couple of new players based abroad, including another striker from Spain, who could be joining the team later this year, but so far, nothing is definite yet.
What he did tell me, though, is that there will be no longer any tryouts for the team. And when one player approached him he wanted to try out for the, he said: “You don’t try out for the team, you get invited for camp,” Dan said. The difference may be subtle, but the message is clear. There are so many players out there willing to play they can be choosy. And the Pinoys who learned their football abroad will go through the same process as the locals, and should wait for an invitation and not expect a direct entry to the team. Unless, of course, you’re a David Alaba or a Stephen Shrock or an Alphonse Areola. By the way, there’s a chance the France-based Areola could suit up for the flag but he knows his best chance to play in the sport’s biggest stage is to wait for a call-up from France. As France’s no. 1 U19 keeper, he’s nearly there, but because of the quirky rules of the international game, he could play for the Philippine Under 23 team and still be eligible for France’s senior squad. cebufootball.blogspot.com/2012/05/fair-play-are-you-ready-for-indonesia.html
- Who's that another Spanish striker?
- Other players abroad aside from above might be the one we've scouted before such as Ingreso etc.
