Q&A with Guam football coach Gary WhiteRyan Fenix, special to InterAKTV · Monday, June 11, 2012 · 5:27 pm Before the Guam national men’s football team takes on the Azkals for an Independence Day friendly match in Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City, InterAKTV had a chance to have a brief email interview with coach Gary White. He shared some very interesting comments on their preparations for the Azkals game and expresses confidence in getting a good result against the higher ranked Philippine team. What are your expectations coming into the game against the Philippines? To prepare and utilize this experience to see which players have the aptitude and desire to start in my 11 for our East Asian Football Championships in July. To show the region our style of play and trademark. Also to introduce our improvements against strong opposition. To showcase our talented young players to the professional teams, there scouts better be ready as there will be competition for the signatures of many of our players. I expect the match to be a real test for my young squad to see who steps up and wants to be counted. How will you prepare to play against a Philippine side that is hungry for a win (after two draws), tactically and mentally? The Azkals hunger does not affect my thoughts and any hunger they may have for a win is nowhere near close the famine our team has, to showcase our style, development and players. You have a very young team, with captain Jason Cunliffe being the most senior at 28 years old, is this correct? There are also Christian Scweizer and Dylan Naputi who are only 17! With the youth players coming in, would you say the future is looking bright for Guam football, which was only affiliated with FIFA in 1996? Yes, our average age is 21, as we have restructured the entire national team program since my appointment. We feel if the players are good enough, they are old enough. No player has been selected due to their age, they have been selected due to their impact. We may not be as old as some other national associations but we are better placed for success than most due to our executives’ vision and the impact they have had regionally and internationally especially our president. The infrastructure that is currently in place and the vision for future development in Guam is what attracted me to the GFA. It seems as if there are some Guam players with Filipino lineage. Can you introduce us to them? Many of our players have a connection to the Philippines, but you can see them in action on the 12th. What do you know about Philippine football and the Azkals? Has [Kaya FC player] Jonah Romero given you the lowdown on the strengths and weaknesses of the Azkals? We are aware of the sudden huge upswing in with national team and respect it, we also know the game is loved in your country. As with any professional program we have done our research and produced detailed dossiers and scouting analysis on your team and the key players in preparation for this game. Recently, Guam’s national team launched its new identifying nickname, you are now known as “Matao”. Can you give us a brief backgrounder as to its meaning and why it was chosen? Matao, in the local language Chamorro, refers to the highest class of indigenous people in ancient Chamorro society. The island’s top warriors, chiefs, fishermen, and later, iron workers were generally from the Matao. Matao was chosen for the Guam men’s national team because it suggests strength, pride, nobility, and leadership, a few ideals and values representative of the team. Any message to the Filipinos and the Guamanians that will be watching? Firstly , THANK YOU for this opportunity to perform for you on such an important day in your country and for assisting in our country’s football development by playing this FIFA international friendly against us. Very special thanks to all those with the PFF as without your cooperation and support none of this would be possible. We are truly grateful. Enjoy the individual performances of our young team and our team’s style of play. You can say you saw our youngsters in action before they were famous. The game on paper may look like there is much disparity in the levels from our age , experience and national pool of players, but thankfully the game is decided on the field not on paper. Don’t under estimate the power of belief and desire mixed with direction leadership and opportunity. Again, Maraming Salamat Po, and Happy Independence Day! www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/qa-with-guam-football-coach-gary-white

Azkals eye convincing win vs GuamBy Olmin Leyba (philstar.com) Updated June 11, 2012 01:36 PM Comments (0) View comments MANILA, Philippines – After two straight draws against ASEAN rivals, the Philippine Azkals (149th) are hard-pressed to score a convincing triumph against a Guam side (194th) that comes into tomorrow’s Fifa international friendly in Bacolod City as a heavy underdog. "I think we need to win big against Guam to justify the strength of the team we have,” Azkals ace striker Phil Younghusband said during yesterday's press conference in Bacolod. The Azkals will parade nearly a full-strength team with Europe-based stalwarts like Dennis Cagara, Jerry Lucena, Denis Wolf, Neil Etheridge, and Paul Mulders on hand once more to hook up with Phl-based aces like Phil and James Younghusband. The team, with a cast that's probably one of the strongest assembled, reels from a 2-2 stalemate with Indonesia last Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Football. Earlier, playing without Etheridge (suspension) and the Younghusbands (prior commitment), the Azkals fought Malaysia to a scoreless draw at the Tigers' turf. “We will try to attack early, put them under pressure without neglecting our defensive duties,” said coach Michael Weiss. The Younghusbands and Etheridge, who all came in as subs in the Indonesia fixture, are expected to start against the Guam Matao, who will have a familiar face in its roster in Kaya midfielder Jonahan Romero. Highly-touted Fil-Danish Cagara and Lucena, who last week suited up less than 24 hours after arriving in Manila, are also fancied to be in the First 11 for the hosts that will miss co-skipper Chieffy Caligdong due to his red card in the last outing. Phl XI will have an extra motivation in playing at the Panaad pitch, the birthplace of the Azkalsmania. “It means a lot to be in Bacolod where it all started. It makes us very proud and gives us a lot of confidence,” said James Younghusband. The Pinoy booters had the Panaad as their home field against Mongolia for their playoff match in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers last year. Caligdong and Phil Younghusband struck before an ecstatic 20,000 fans in a 2-0 win that served as cushion to a 3-2 triumph on goal aggregate, sending the Azkals to the main qualifying stage. The Azkals eventually hurdled the qualifiers, made the main tourney for the first time ever and eventually won a milestone bronze. www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=816207&publicationSubCategoryId=200

I like these response given by Coach White of the Guam team:
"As with any professional program we have done our research and produced detailed dossiers and scouting analysis on your team and the key players in preparation for this game."
It sounds like the approach Coach Mourinho was famous for when preparing for an opponent. In contrast I never hear Coach Weiss make responses in the same vein.
Nevertheless, because of their inexperience, I think the Guam team will be overmatched in this game, no matter how well their Coach prepares them.

For some reason, Coach Weiss is having a hard time expressing himself in front of the media. However, we do have the same approach as other teams in which I've personally seen similar documents being reviewed by the players before the match but this is just something that's not being talked about during press con or interviews. In a different note, I saw the new Azkals website and under the article Azkals Squad List against Guam. There's a picture of the possible starting eleven for the match. www.azkalsfootballteam.com/news.php?id=186Is that Aly Borromeo wearing #42? .There's also a guy behind Wolf. Maybe Mulders or de Murga.

It is really comforting to see Aly training with the team. Yeah, that picture wouldn't say so much about the starting XI but man... I surely like to see that line up for the game against Guam.
Goalkeepers: Neil Etheridge Defenders: Robert James Gier, Jason Abbott Sabio, Carlos Alberto Martinez de Murga, Dennis Cagara Midfielders: James Joseph Younghusband, Jerry Lucena, Jason Nicolas Maria De Jong , Jeffrey Christiaens Strikers: Denis Wolf, Philip James Younghusband

Mourinho was famous for going beyond just documents, showing video analysis of the opposing player's favorite moves and tendencies and how to counter them.
I expect a totally different team in the second half, assuming we are well ahead, with Borromeo, Christiaens, Deyto, Clarino, Moy, Reichelt, Araneta and Anto Gonzales being given some playing time.

Yup, that's why Mourinho is Mourinho right? He is the chosen one..
I'm sure that a lot of coaches even Coach Weiss will prepare their players for an upcoming game. They actual watch video recordings of the opposing teams (forgot the tournament but probably the AFC CC). However, the documents provided for the players have brief details on the opposing player's strengths and weaknesses. Of course, a video analysis in more effective than reading it on a piece of paper but our national team takes advantage of whatever resources we have at our disposal. It's probably different when coaching for Chelsea or Real Madrid.
Going back to the topic, we really need a decisive win against Guam. A strong first half will give the opportunity for other players to show what they have. It would have been better for our reserve players to play against high level teams but it is still better than not playing at all.
Another aspect of the friendly that I'm looking at is the attendance and atmosphere in Panaad. I think it is going to be massive.

maybe Aly showed his lack of fitness during their training camp that's why he wasn't called up
do you guys agree if Wolf will play the false 9 role?

maybe Aly showed his lack of fitness during their training camp that's why he wasn't called up do you guys agree if Wolf will play the false 9 role? I presume Aly wants to be in the starting XI or be a sub for at least 60-70 minutes once he returns playing for the NT. I think he was just there just to gain his fitness. Wolf was unimpressive on defense so I don't think he does the false 9 really well. He's better playing beside Phil, not behind him.

okay so we might have a 4-4-2 formation, but it's also possible that Wolf might not start this game if Weiss will use Mulders, Angel and Christiaens. but i wan't a phil-wolf tandem

Azkals bare line-up for Independence Day showdown with GuamROY MOORE June 11, 2012 10:15pm The Azkals have released their 23-man squad ahead of their friendly with the Guam national football team at the Panaad Stadium, Bacolod on Tuesday. With only a few new faces, it looks like the Philippines are looking to get a dominant win after draws with Malaysia and Indonesia. Who’s in and out? First choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge is included and is likely to start with Roland Müller left out of the lineup. Patrick Deyto was also added as third choice keeper behind Ed Sacapaño. In front of Etehridge, the usual shortage of defenders in the squad list means the same back four which started against Indonesia will probably feature again with Carli De Murga at right back, Rob Gier and Jason Sabio in the center and Dennis Cagara on the left, while Juani Guirado stays in the sideline following the knee injury he picked up against Malaysia. Consistency is probably the most important assignment for the Azkals. In preparation for the Long Teng Cup and the Suzuki Cup, Coach Weiss is expected to keep the back line in place with the boys in blue continuing to make progress defensively. UP coach Anto Gonzlaes is another addition to the squad, but he is the only new face in a packed midfield. Lexton Moy and Jason De Jong will be due for some playing time as they didn’t feature in the previous two friendlies. Up front, fans will see Denis Wolf, Phil Younghusband, Ian Araneta and OJ Clarino, with the likelihood that Weiss will now play two up top. Wolf and Younghusband are the obvious choices as the German head coach seems keen on securing a win, but once a few goals are scored, expect the Smiling Assassin and the Stallion Striker to figure into the fray. Here is the full squad list as announced by the official Azkals website: Goalkeepers: Neil Etheridge, Eduard Sacapano, Patrick Deyto Defenders: Rob Gier, Jason Sabio, Carli de Murga, Roxy Dorlas, Jerry Lucena, Dennis Cagara Midfielders: James Younghusband, Misagh Bahadoran, Angel Guirado, Anto Gonzales, Patrick Reichelt, Jason De Jong, Paul Mulders, Marwin Angeles, Lexton Moy, Jeffrey Christiaens Strikers: Denis Wolf, Philip James Younghusband, Ian Araneta, Mario Javier Clarino GuamGuam is a country of less than 200,000 people. Ranked 194th in the world, they are the clear underdogs aiming to keep the score respectful. Little is known of Guam’s squad and many of the players are either amateurs or semi-professionals. One familiar name is Jonahan Romero, who plays alongside Philippine players Lexton Moy and Jason Sabio for Kaya FC in the UFL. Given Guam’s size and population, the football team isn’t a priority for the country. After 35 years as a member of FIFA, Guam finally recorded its first victory over FIFA opposition in 2009, with a 1-0 victory over Mongolia. Two years later, they got their second victory in a 2-0 win over American Samoa. This will also be Guam’s first friendly of the year. And after the match against the Philippine national squad, the visiting team may also be facing UFL sides Global and Stallions in Manila on the 14th and 16th of June. Opportunity to experiment The friendly against Guam is also a chance for the Azkals management to experiment. Bringing Patrick Deyto and Anto Gonzales in gives the squad a good chance to integrate a couple of promising players into the side. Should Etheridge make it big in England, he will be unavailable for many tournaments, while Roland Müller’s long distance is also a concern for the future. As such, Patrick Deyto may well have the opportunity to prove himself as a solid third choice keeper for future years. Having featured little in previous games, some players also hoping to get more playing time, and now there's a perfect opportunity to give minutes to those players hungry for a game. With many of the Kaholeros making the trip to Bacolod, the Azkals will be well supported so we can expect that the Philippines will have another national victory to celebrate on Independence Day. - AMD, GMA News www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/261522/sports/football/azkals-bare-line-up-for-independence-day-showdown-with-guam

PH Azkals to pull all stops versus Guam todayBy Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer 11:03 pm | Monday, June 11th, 2012 BACOLOD CITY—A dose of overconfidence could spell disaster. On the heels of two straight draws, the Philippine Azkals are expected not to take any chances when they face lower-ranked Guam today at Panaad Stadium here—the last of their three international friendly matches this month. The Azkals go into the 7 p.m. match marking Independence Day as the overwhelming favorite because of their better ranking spiked by their recent run of impressive results. But Guam’s English coach Gary White is unfazed by the Azkals’ credentials, saying they’re ready to go toe-to-toe with a home side aching to finally win after back-to-back draws against Malaysia and Indonesia. “We know who their threats are and we’re not afraid,” said White, an English coach who has had stints handling the national teams of the US Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. White, who only came aboard last February, admitted that his squad, mostly made up of US Division 1 players, is much like the Philippines “five years ago.” Azkals coach Michael Weiss cautioned his side against taking Guam lightly. “We respect them (Guam) and we will treat it like any match we have played,” said Weiss, who considers the match an important component of their preparations for the Suzuki Cup. Phil and James Younghusband are expected to start against Guam, along with Neil Etheridge and Jerry Lucena as the Azkals hope to flash a more fluid attack that had gone missing in the first half against Indonesia. The four came off the bench in the 2-2 draw against Indonesia where the Younghusband brothers scored a goal each to salvage the tie. Denis Wolf could pair up with Phil Younghusband up front, while Paul Mulders remains hopeful to get the start after he was substituted at halftime against Indonesia because of an injury. Guam has a player familiar with the Philippines’ side in Jonathan Romero, who plays club football for Kaya in the United Football League. Romero plays with Azkals Jason Sabio and Lexton Moy at Kaya. sports.inquirer.net/48215/ph-azkals-to-pull-all-stops-versus-guam-today?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
