MANILA, Philippines — A team of homeless young adults will play in the Century Tuna Cup Philippines, a whole-day 7-a-side football tournament, on Sunday, World Cup Pilipinas organizer TJ Besa said.
The 7-a-side competition will be played alongside the final four championship of the month-long 11-a-side Castrol World Cup Pilipinas games at the Liwasang Ipil-Ipil on the Buendia extension side of the CCP Complex.
Among the players of Homeless World Cup are brothers Abdulah and Hammid Pasion who live by the railroad tracks in Sta. Cruz, Manila. Besa said their participation shows that football, often called “the beautiful game,” offers equal opportunity to all players, regardless of social stature and physical height.
“Literally and figuratively, football is able to offer a level playing field for all. The entire event, spearheaded by the Castrol World Cup Pilipinas, is a launching pad and advocacy to create more public football fields,” he said.
“With the gracious nod of the CCP and engineering support of the Army’s 525th Brigade, the 1st football fields at the CCP are now a dream made reality. However, field developments continue as does the search for other parties willing to sustain the mission,” he added.
Besa said the Homeless World Cup team, composed of eight players between 18 and 25 years old, may play against any of other teams that will sign up for the tournament scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 20.
The 7-a-side tournament is a briefer version of a full game of football yet allows more teams to compete within a shorter span of time. Men's and Women's groups are still open for registration. The Century Tuna Cup Pilipinas begins at 8 a.m. this Sunday, June 20 with final matches expected to kickoff at 4 p.m. on the same day.
On the other hand, the month-long WCP will come to an end with final four teams vying for the championship this weekend. The semifinalists include the Philippines, Ivory Coast, Portugal, and Sweden. Semifinals start today at 2 p.m. and final matches are on Sunday starting at 2 p.m.
WCP is a project initiated by UP Diliman-based football club, Sunken Garden United (SGU), and supported by government and private sectors. It is currently the only 11-a-side tournament which features teams representing the world’s football superpowers.
Admission to all games is free for the viewing public and made possible by Castrol, Century Tuna, Milo 3-in-1, Nestea, Mizuno, Nestle Fruit Selection, McDonald’s, SM, Jam 88.3, Wave 89.1, Magic 89.9, 99.5 RT, Max-FM 103.5, and the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines.
