Since we've been discussing the back four in the PHI-MYA thread, I decided to create a separate thread. After reading Bob Guerrero's article ( ph.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/thepassionatefan/azkals-myanmar-preview-familiar-faces-161454989.html ), I became very curious about Jason Cordova. Bob G describes him as "tall, healthy, young, Internationally-experienced". Would have been a good addition to the team, especially that some of our reliable defenders are either old or based abroad. Since we have a shortage of defenders, why use back four? Why not back three? But I think that would be risky though hehehe. Kayo, what are your insights about our back four? Share them here.

Unabia was part of the training pool before. he has the built and the height of the CB but he is no longer part of the GAU roster. heard that he is currently with Ceres but i haven't seen him playing.
Gould is good in winning the headers but the problem is his poor man-marking. he was a striker in our NT before, scoring 6 goals in 13 appearance if im not mistaken.
there are few good local-based CB's in the UFL. Hugo of GAU is also good but lacks the height, there's also an Air Force CB from Davao who impressed me but i don't know if he can match the physical play of an International game.

Rob Gier and Juani Guirado are not exactly spring chickens. They probably only have a few more years left. It appears Jason de Jong is being groomed as a future CB judging from his being played as a defender whenever none of the reglar back for are available. Could also be the reason why Weiss is fielding other players who are not natural defenders - to find players who would potentially replace Gier and Juani

Why not try Chad Gould or Unabia since he loves experimenting?

I was thinking of JYH to be converted as a defender maybe a RB and carlie could play as a CB just like last year's Peace Cup.

I yearn to see a young back four lineup like this:
de murga - takahashi - sabio - christaens

James Yh played defense in the last "ICare"(whats that tourneys name again?) to include Angel at CDM. As I recal James did pretty well as did Angel, but the opposition was local.
Chad Gould once played as a CD in England lets not forget, but he really doesn't shine when I do watch him play in the UFL. Although I do like his height and overall knowledge of the game. I think Weiss should really try him out as a backup in the roster but he'll probably put Marvin in at CB before Gould(sarcasm).

Who thinks we need a "real" CB in our game rosters rather than a "converted" player? Weiss love going into friendlies and even tournaments with, at most 5 defenders, with 4 of them starters. Who would you pick from the UFL(only) that can possibly back up our starting 2 center backs? They can be young or old but must be someone you can consider a "true" CB.

chad gould was impressive with their last game against loyola. though we know he's a converted CB lately, i think he is consistent with his past few games.

we need younger defenders, especially CBs. fullbacks are never a problem. hope some younger good CB will spring from the u-23 squad. never mind if it's local of fil-foreign as long as he's ready to play.

Naturalize Joaquín Cañas!!! That would be very hard to do, I tell you. In March 2004, A FIFA committee ruling judged that players must be able to demonstrate a "clear connection" to a country that they had not been born in but wished to represent. This ruling explicitly stated that, in such scenarios, the player must have at least one parent or grandparent who was born in that country, or the player must have been resident in that country for at least two years. The residency requirement for players lacking birth or ancestral connections with a specific country was extended from two to five years in May 2008 at FIFA's Congress as part of Blatter's efforts to preserve the integrity of competitions involving national teams. Joaquin is turning 26 this year, 4 more years he will be 30 years old to become eligible. So I think he is out..
