A dream start for the Philippines.
A well-hyped East Timor side were on the wrong end of a 5-0 beating in Friday night's Suzuki Cup qualifiers' opening game. The former Portuguese colony took control of the match early on, threatening goalkeeper Neil Etheridge with their presence inside the Philippines' box. A shot well wide was the last of their offence.
After a well-delivered goal kick, the Azkals managed to find their feet and threaten the Timorese with their own attacks. Anton del Rosario fired a shot wide to pressure Timor Leste even more. The breakthrough finally came when the Timorese keeper failed to catch the ball properly and it fell right in front of Emelio Caligdong, his open shot was blocked by two defenders but Ian Araneta hit the deflection with a diving header to put the Azkals up front, 1-0.
The goal broke Timor's concentration and demoralized them and it showed a few moments later when clumsy defending gave the Philippines a penalty. Striker Phil Younghusband took the spot kick and made no mistake, 2-0 to the Azkals! Timor's misfortunes didn't end there, barely five minutes after a foul won the Philippines a free-kick from just outside the Timorese box taken by James Younghusband. A brilliant and accurate cross met the head of Anton del Rosario to make it 3-0 to the Azkals!
It was raining goals for the Philippines then, and it wasn't the end! Right before half-time, Chieffy Caligdong's back pass was crossed by Phil Younghusband, the Timorese keeper tried to catch it but it met the head of Ian Araneta already allowing him to score his second and the Philippines' fourth! It was 4-0 Azkals.
HALF TIME SCORELINE: East Timor 0 - 4 Philippines
Second half starts. East Timor showed their attacking prowess again just like early in the first half. There were several chances taken by the Timorese, but solid defending from the Philippines denied them a goal. On the other hand, the Philippines' goal-scoring didn't seem to end as Ian Araneta completes his hat-trick from another header! It was 5-0 Azkals then, it seemed like Timor Leste had no chance of winning anymore.
Phil Younghusband was the first one to be subbed off in the match, most likely to be rested for Sunday's encounter with Laos, veteran striker Yanti Barsales made his way onto the pitch.
A bad tackle from Jason de Jong resulted in him picking up a yellow card, East Timor were awarded a free-kick.
From then on, the Philippines began showing signs of becoming complacent. East Timor found several chances to score, their most threatening one: a brilliant through ball fed to the striker gave him a one-on-one situation with Neil Etheridge. Thanks to the keeper's experience with English Premier League team, Fulham FC, he maneuvered a block to foil the striker's attempt and skipper Aly Borromeo cleared the ball away. James Younghusband was eventually subbed off for Joebel Bermejo and later on Manny Ott exited the pitch for Nestorio Margarse Jr.
The match ended with Rob Gier picking up a booking for dissent and three more East Timor players picked up a single yellow each.
