What a match that was.
The Philippines went in to this match having lost their previous two encounters with the home side. And to top it all off, the Laotians had the support of hundreds of their home supporters bringing with them drums and other instruments they used to cheer their team on.
It seemed to have helped their national side perform as early on in the match Laos dominated possession and were on the attack. The Filipinos won the ball at several instances but were not allowed to hold on to the ball for a long time by the hosts. A one-on-one situation between a Laotian striker and keeper Neil Etheridge nearly put the home side in front early on, but Etheridge's heroic interception saved the home side...for then at least, as in the 27th minute an unmarked Laotian attacker was able to breach the Philippine defense, backpass the ball to his teammate who rolled the ball in slowly. Etheridge went the wrong way and a Rob Gier clearance was too late as the ball had crossed barely a foot off the line. It was 1-0 to the Laotians.
Being a goal down seemed to have hurt the Azkals' morale as another brilliant combination of passing gave space for a Laotian attacker to make a shot but went over the bar. There was more cause to fear for the Filipinos though, in the 32nd minute Emelio Caligdong went down and signaled for a substitution. He was brought out of the pitch for David Basa.
The ensuing free-kick gave the Azkals a glimmer of hope, James sent a curling free-kick into the Laos box which gave an open chance for Araneta but his shot was off target.
A couple more free-kicks were taken by James Younghusband and Ray Jonsson before the referee signaled for half-time. The Filipinos knew they needed to improve their ball possession and their passing if they wanted to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The second half started with an indirect free-kick to the home side. After which, in the 49th minute Phil Younghusband was fouled right in front of the Laos box. However, his direct free-kick went over the bar.
There were tell-tale signs that the match was going physical as well, Anton del Rosario went off the pitch to have a gouged eye treated.
In the 57th minute, the Azkals were showing signs that they were awake when a free-kick by James Younghusband created two shots that were both cleared off the line by Laotian defenders. The keeper had well been beaten and the Filipinos were unlucky not to have scored.
A push on a Laotian player by Manuel Ott earned him a yellow card a free-kick to the hosts. The next five minutes were all about midfield passing. In the 67th minute however, a shot that deflected off a Laotian defender forced their keeper to make a reflex save. This was the closest so far that the Azkals had come to scoring.
There was a glimmer of hope for the Azkals in the 75th minute, as a push on Phil Younghusband gave the Philippines a penalty. This was well taken by Phil as he made it Laos 2 - 1 Philippines.
Needing just one goal to equalize, the Azkals looked more aggressive and were now on the attack. Ian Araneta fired a cracker of a shot outside the box to force the Laos keeper once again to make a sensational save. The keeper leaped so high and so sudden that he crashed hard on the ground right after. The game had to be paused in order to give him treatment.
Regulation time ended with more close chances for both teams, but the Filipinos broke Laotian hearts as in the 3rd minute of stoppage time, a well taken free-kick by goalkeeper Neil Etheridge into the Laos box was met by James Younghusband who headed the ball in! He made it Philippines 2-2 Laos.
