MANILA, Philippines – Top English football club Manchester United, in partnership with Clear, is launching a soccer camp in the Philippines in an effort to help promote the sport in the country and inspire the next generation of Filipino football players.
Unilever vice president for personal care Gina Lorenzana and Manchester United managing director for Asia Pacific Jamie Reigle made the announcement on Monday.
“This 2014, Clear and Manchester United will launch the first-ever Clear-Manchester United Football Camp, where the 32 most promising young amateur players will be trained in the Manchester United Soccer School,” Lorenzana said in a statement.
“Clear and Manchester United share a common philosophy in football development, and I am excited by the extensive program of activity that we will be delivering together,” said Reigle. “Our shared commitment to inspiring today’s youth through football not only enhances physical well-being but promotes social development too.”
According to Clear brand manager Drew Copuyoc, try-outs will be launched in Metro Manila, Iloilo, Cebu and Davao in late March, with the top 32 amateur footballers getting a chance to train at the Manchester United Football Camp, which will take place on April 25 to 27 in Metro Manila.
The coaches for April’s football camp have yet to be named, but Reigle assured that they will be highly trained coaches who can teach young Filipino footballers to play the “Manchester United way.”
“There’s a full curriculum in terms of skills, tactics, preparations and diet,” he said. “The curriculum is set by the Manchester United (first team) coaches, and the official coaches coming to the Philippines have been trained in that philosophy.”
“It’s fair to say that it’s a fairly intense program,” he added. “They’ll be taught about tactics, they’ll talk about how Manchester United prepares for the games, both in physical in terms of the training and the mental, and the health side in terms of what they have to eat.”
“But there will be a lot of fun as well. It’s fairly structured, but this isn’t a boot camp. It’s meant to really inspire (the participants).”
For now, the camp will only be open to male players, who can register at the official website (www.cleardreammatch.com.ph) starting February 1.
The schedule of the tryouts will be as follows: March 22 (Cebu), March 23 (Iloilo), March 29 (Davao), and March 30 (Metro Manila).
Lorenzana said the partnership with Manchester United brings Clear and Unilever closer to its goal of bringing football at part with basketball in terms of popularity in the Philippines.
“Clear has made … propagating the sport of footballs its no. 1 social mission, and we are committed to making sure that this sport grows very big in this country,” she said. “This is our dream, for Philippine football to be as big as basketball, to be as popular.”
“Clear and Manchester United is a partnership that will help propagate Philippine football, and we’re very committed to have a whole host of activities within 2014 to propagate the sport that we love,” Lorenzana added.
