Thread is quite long havent made a thorough back read. What do you think guys of de Jong's performance. Is he playing exceptionally well and got the nod of coach Dooley as a regular starter? While James and OJ is spending time at the bench? Not pointing him out but I noticed that de Dong had been commiting mistakes like so many interceptions by the opponent either he is the passer or receiver. I was paying attention to de Jong for the simple fact that I love the defensive side of the game more. Here's a short comment on how I saw his play in the series. De Jong has obviously gained the trust of Dooley. He was dynamic through out the series and seems to have given carte blanche to go on the offensive depending on the situation and the actions of the opponent, notice his handful of shots on goal. He's had many mid range balls to try to catch an opponent off guard. Unfortunately it seemed to me that his mid and longish passes did not connect as much as say, Lucena's would. His number 1 position is DM but especially in earlier games he looked equally comfortable playing as a regular CM, that is to say playing offense and defense in equal measure. Always expect an out of control tackle or ill timed tackle when he plays and if you could watch the series again you'll know what I mean. Perhaps not an impact player but someone that can be counted on as you can tell by how Mcmenemy, Weiss and Dooley has used him. Yup thats what im talking about his mid and long passes needs improvement. Yeah those "signature JDJ" tackles.... made way for that Palestine free kick and cost us the trip down under.

Until now I'm still disappointed much more when I looked at present FIFA ranking of Palestine. These are what Philippines misses when they feel short in Maldives.
1. The chance to compete with the big boys in Asia, the glamour to play on the same pitch against Japanese top players like Keisuke Honda and Shinji Kagawa.
2. The chance of breaching FIFA top 100 rankings.
3. The loss of potential commercial endorsers as the anticipation of going to Australia is nearing. Though they gained some but not the same magnitude if they won the Challenge Cup.
4. The leverage of getting the services of top player like Fil-Aussie Iain Ramsay was greatly diminished
5. Being second place may have awaken the awareness of Filipinos with Azkals but not in same extent if we qualify to Australia. Imagine, if we did there will be a lot video and news clips in Mass Media highlighting their victory. And it will go on until early next year's Asia Cup.
6. In domestic level, it will serve as impetus for UFL to increase their gate attendance and to encourage corporate sponsors.
7. It was the last Challenge Cup so there won't be any next time. While Suzuki Cup is a bigger tournament nothing eclipsed if we won the last Challenge Cup. Winning the Suzuki Cup is far-fetched anyway with the foreseeable entry of Socceroos.
8. Wider TV coverage it couldn't not just 4 UFL matches a week to be aired by ABS CBN but more if we had been successful.

What we need at the moment is a creative striker/forward and top-in-form centerback... I think PYH is on downward form as he is not the same level as two years ago, I doubt he will regain his previous self. Every player has peak time and I think PYH had his in 2010-2012. So for this reason we need an extra hand in front to complement PYH as Reichelt is more effective in right flank not up the pitch. Though Gier and Juani are effective at the back, i think we need to augment this position by enlisting another prospect aside from developing the understudy Amani. Also, it appears both Gier and Juani like PYH are also heading downward form-wise.

From what I've seen in just concluded Challenge Cup among the Azkals who are slipping form are Younghusband brothers, Gier, Mulders, Etheridge, Cagara, DelRo,
Either injured or out of form are Schrock, Juani, Doctora,
In peak form are Rota, Muller, Steuble, Reichelt
In form and up are Sato, Aguinaldo,
Constant are De Jong, Greatwich brothers, Lucena, Porteria, Daniels

We had beaten Palestine two years ago but not this year. Is it because majority of our starters has peaked the same time that year? Barcelona were so successful in 2009-2011 when a their group of players like Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Pique, Dani Alves has reached their peak at the same period.

When I saw Palestine's new FIFA ranking, I was thinking "that could have been us." The "last" AFC Challenge Cup could have been ours & would have been an awesome momento. But like in any other sport & in any event in life, when things fall apart, it only means something else is being put together in a much better way. Cliche but true :-) So, in the AFC Challenge Cup, we have two opportunities lost: (1) winning the challenge cup & going into the Asian Cup and (2) increasing/maintaining football interest in the country. #1 Winning the challenge cup. We cannot do anything about it anymore. Just charge it to experience. BUT.... I watched Coach Dooley's interview online with Coach Hans & Jing (?). Everything that he said so far made me confident with the team's future. I think that they would do their best to prepare the team for the Suzuki Cup. They mentioned potential friendlies in North America. He said Canada was very interested. A friendly game with US national team would depend on how the US fairs in the world cup. And he also mentioned other countries like Mexico. The staff, I think, is doing well in scouting players locally & internationally. Let's just pray for a bit more luck that the "right" players would come at the "right time" (meaning in time for the Suzuki cup tournament, etc). Hence, we can count the staff doing their best to prepare the team and I think the players are going to be highly committed too. #2 Increasing/maintaining football interest in the country, including getting new sponsors/investors for football: Like I've mentioned before, its unrealistic to just depend on the Azkals in promoting football in the country. Certainly the national team is a main driving force in the resurgence of football in the country but by now we shouldn't just be depending on them. There would always be highs and lows in playing because everyone else is doing their best to win. With that thought in mind, everyone in the football community has to do their part. For example, the UFL needs to further step up their game & in campaigning. Its good that AKTV is airing the games 4 times a week now. But is it enough to increase football audience or attendance in football games? These things can only be answered by TPTB in UFL. PFF: They seem to be going in the right direction in developing grassroots program in the country. We hear & read news about it. They also have support from other football associations. Although the funding portion is still a challenge, especially funding for the national team. Football fans need to be more visible or continue to be visible, including in social media, whether the Azkals are winning or losing. This also attracts endorsers, sponsors, or investors because they can see there is a stable demand for football despite results of the game. Observe how local celebrity fan groups campaign for their favorite celebrities. These celebrities do not stand a chance in making it big (in showbiz) if they don't have a solid fanbase for back-up. We see in the news fan groups sponsoring movie premieres for their favorite actor's movie. They sponsor advertising for movies - traditional media & online. This type of thing gets in the news. I'm not saying that we should follow what they're doing. We could but my point is there are many other ways to support the overall goal of the Azkals or Philippine football. It could probably also attract talented Football players to play for UFL or for the country. Who knows. Football fans are very passionate in supporting the sport so it gives the opportunity to think outside of the box. These are just some ideas. Just throwing it out there.

I disagree with you on this. I think he's still getting better, its just that: 1.) he is coming off an injury, which you can see, affected his fitness. 2.) competition now against opponents 2 years ago are tougher. I mean we are playing tougher team now than 2 years ago. This is not the same palestinian team we beat in 2012. 3.) he is now a marked man. See how defenders marked him whenever he has the ball. At least 2 trying to flank him. Expect our opponents to really marked him, since he's azkals top goal scorer.

After watching the replay of the Final match against Palestine, it became much clearer to me how unnecessary de Jong's tackle from behind really was. There were 2 Azkals directly in front of the Palestinian #7: Sato and Gier, and there were 2 others further out the sides, IIRC it was Rota and Aguinaldo; in short, Muller wasn't exactly dangerously exposed in front of goal. The Palestinian #7 wasn't even poised to shoot from the edge of the box, from his movements and body language he was evidently looking to pass. de Jong once again seems to have forgotten what football coaches say all the time: "if you have to tackle from behind, that means you've already been beaten since your opponent has already gone past you." He really should have just let the back 4 handle the guy since he was no threat at that sequence. Heck, let him shoot from that distance if he wants to!

Football fans are very passionate in supporting the sport so it gives the opportunity to think outside of the box. These are just some ideas. Just throwing it out there. agree on this. football fans can get ideas from how celebrity fans campaign. I've been part of both groups of fans & there is a big gap. Right now, i've noticed that majority of football fans are kinda passive. tend to just wait for the schedule of games & then watch them live(online, tv or in the stadium), a few discussion here & there & buy some merchandise if convenient. that's it. not that those aren't admirable BUT celebrity fan groups are RABID! they have no inhibitions in promoting. way more tech savvy & would use any medium they can think of. they don't just support, they pull; create ways for they idols. no whining when an event isn't broadcasted live because they know someone would video or livestream it (w/ or w/o permission) & upload it for others to watch. Concert & movie tickets are more expensive too but you won't hear a lot of complaints. They're tireless too on social media. If football fans are said to be passionate then I guess celebrity fans are bordering on obsessive & crazy. recent example of this is the Clear Dream match. There are designated accounts who continuously tweets about the event. There is a pattern to those tweets that suggested those words came from one person or two & not from the players themselves. If Carlie de Murga's perfect conversational English wasn't a dead giveaway then the almost generic, "Hey ____, #Team____ would......." was. if it wasn't for the timing, a lot would've praised their effort instead of criticizing them & i bet those handling these accounts are just fans of Phil & James who are doing all of these for free.... well maybe save for some free tickets, a pic or an autograph.
