TALAGANG HINDI MAGANDANG PAKINGGAN ANG PALAYAW NA "AZKALS"!Malakas ang dating kung binansagang "HARIBON", ang pambansang ibon ng Pilipinas. First the sipaang bola(futbol) now haribon (agila) ?

Sige, tawagin mo ang koponan "Haribon" at tatawagin pa rin namin silang "AZKALS".

Hey everyone! Happy New Year! I'm for "Azkals", always have been, but I can understand the point of those who disagree with it. I don't know, I like the idea of a pack of growling street dogs fighting the good fight on the pitch. I even see how it can apply to the team being a TEAM instead of a singular majestic entity like an eagle, rooster, tiger, or lion. They're a pack, a group of brothers from the streets. There's a toughness to it I like. And it's undeniably unique. If someone mentioned the lions or tigers I wouldn't have a clue which national team you may be referring to because I'm sure there are more than one. But Azkals? Pinoy, pare. That's just me, of course, but it seems the world is catching on.

Caz, I think every Pinoy in every corner of the world, when he/she hears the word Askal, will know its a Filipino term. When he/she hears/read the word Azkal in a news report, her/his curiosity will be aroused.
Yep, the world is catching up. And there's a feature video by Fulham on Neil Etheridge, when the commentator calls the team Azkals. And it was shot in 2008, before of all this!

Azkal is now synonymous to the RP Football team so let's just stick to it. They have already been branded and marketed as such so let's stick with it. Let's not be Filipino on this one...disagreeing on such a small thing and instead rally behind the boys and show them the support that they need. Try renaming the team? Good luck!

kaligo, agreed. Hey I remember that Fulham feature! It was right after Neil's first stint with the Azkals for the Challenge Cup qualifiers, right? Too bad we didn't advance, goal difference and all.

Personally I think the name Azkals is one of the best nicknames. Please do not take this post too seriously but here are a few reasons, I hope others can add to the list and can I state none of this is original information and it is in no particular order:
1. It refers partly to the colour the team play in –azure – in a way that a number of other teams do i.e. “the blues” 2. It is a unique mixture of askal with azure 3. It is not strict Tagalog so more Filipino belonging to all Filipinos 4. It refers to a pack or team in the correct parlance not an individual 5. Mongrels are known to fight best as a pack (team) 6. Not many people could claim to be pure blooded Filipinos so the references to mixed lineage is also fitting (same with ost countries if we are honest) 7. Askals are common throughout the Philippines as we wish football to be 8. So-called “pure breed” dogs tend to be more susceptible to genetic weaknesses 9. Pure breeds tend to be more predictable by nature and in football you do not want to be too predictable 10. If you translate it into American-English it would be Mutt which is often an affectionate term 11. Mutts live longer than purebreds and we want our players to have a long career 12. Filipinos and non-Filipinos know the name and to change it now would be like giving a beautiful girl a facelift she does not need! 13. The name is starting to be feared by other national teams :-) (Final couple are little tongue in cheek) 14. A German study found that "Mongrels require less veterinary treatment" and health care in the Philippines is expensive ( R. Beythien, Tierarten- und Hunderassenverteilung, Erkrankungshäufigkeit und prophylaktische Maßnahmen bei den häufigsten Hunderassen am Beispiel einer Tierarztpraxis in Bielefeld in den Jahren 1983-1985 und 1990-1992, 1998, Diss., Tierärztl. Hochschule Hannove). 15. Mutts live longer than purebreds and we want our players to have a long careers (G.J. Patronek, D.J. Walters, L.T. Glickman, Comparative Longevity of Pet Dogs and Humans: Implications for Gerontology Research, J. Geront., BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, 1997, Vol 52A,No.3, B171-B178 quote (p. B173))
Happy New Year Azkals and supporters.

+1 Craig. I never cease to be amazed that there are so many Johnny come lately's who think they are going to change the name. They have a snowballs chance in hell of getting it changed. I'm sure you will make Paul pleased to know that his country has done a study that could prove beneficial to an extended healthy outlook for our players.

Mate that is such a comprehensive list I cant think of anything to add to that. I'm sure your wasted morning won't be wasted on one person (me) as others will find the same amount of fun in the list. Regarding the AZKAL anthem there is a topic here in this forum. But I think it will get bogged down in differences of opinion. Maybe it will take a meet and greet in Bacolod with the locals and visitors to Bacolod to come up with a definite plan. It would mean that it is right on top of the game but Filipinos have the work ethic of getting the job done even if it means burning the midnight oil to do so. When will you be going to Bacolod Craig?
