Acc. to this article in Malaya, Weiss is adopting a more defensive counterattacking approach: WITH new faces yet to be fully integrated into his squad, Philippine Team coach Hans Michael Weiss will aim for a more conservative approach against host Myanmar today as the country kicks off its campaign in the Asian Challenge Cup. "Since we will play on Myanmar’s home ground, we will be have a much more defensive game, much more counterattacking," said Weiss, whose charges tangle with the Burmese at the Myanmar Football Federation Youth Center at 3:30 p.m. (5 p.m. Manila time). ;Dlooks like coach weiss heard you ceagle hehehe, but kidding aside using the counterattacking style in this game is feasible, for wthe azkals will be up against an overwhelming hometown crowd so it's best for us to first defend well & keep the game close for us to have a crack of winning this game ;D

Yes. I am glad to see that Coach Weiss is pragmatic enough to adopt a defensive approach when the situation demands it. Maybe he has been reading our posts. ;D Too bad we can't see the game live.

I do hope the game stays clean tomorrow. I remember one comment from their last meeting that both Myanmar and the Philippines played very fairly with no malice. But of course, that was in Vietnam. Anyways, with this defensive strategy I feel a little better. I wish so bad that we can see these games live.

I kinda agree with the counter-attacking mindset going into this myanmar game. But I think it's totally different to say that we should "park the bus" in this game. Remember, we need 3 points here and not just settle for a draw. It's not like the mongolia series when mongolia parked the bus in bacolod because they know they still have a home game to score their goals. Anyway, let's just hope the Azkals will play a disciplined game, wait for the right chances to attack and have the killer instinct when they do attack. No need to park the bus the whole game. Cut some slack on Coach Weiss guys, I think he know's what he's doing. Heck, even though i'm a huge England fan, I'd rather have a German coach my team. These guys know their football - disciplined, organized and efficient. P.S. This is my first post. It's great to see a lot of supporters here. We may have different opinions, but hey we have the same goals right. Just like that line on the French kits nowadays, "Nos Differences Nous Unissent" (Our Differences Unite Us)

I agree. No need to park the bus at least not in the beginnning. I have been advocating a counterattacking German style not the hyperdefensive Italian catenaccio. Maybe in the 2nd half when we are holding a lead or am a man or two down should we park the bus. And as I have mentioned before, I just wanted Coach Weiss to pay a little more attention to the defence and he seems to have seen the light, so I am happy. In the first 2 games they were definitely not disciplined, organized or efficient. On the contrary ,they were losing their defensive shape. Maybe this time they will adopt that old fashioned German counterattacking style I have advocated. I just wished I could watch the game to see it unfold.

Coach Weiss opts to field makeshift back four with Borromeo playing the holding midfield role . Boromeo to Play Defensive Midfield? With midfield dynamo Jason de Jong missing again in the opening match of the AFC Challenge Cup against the host nation, the team is looking for other options to fill the defensive midfield spot which was their weakness when they lost 2-1 to Mongolia in the 2nd leg of the qualifiers. The team needed someone to fill that gap as they’re losing control of midfield, giving more possession resulting in more chances for the opposition to score. Skipper Aly Borromeo will need to turn to his playmaking skills in challenge to fill the role, combining it with his defensive qualities. We saw Borromeo play midfield regularly with Dan Palami’s Global FC when they won the UFL Cup last season with the skipper voted as the Most Valuable Player. Now with Kaya FC he plays center back, but at times switched to midfield when the team lacks presence upfront. Will he be effective in midfield at international level? We are yet to see. Captain Aly will now be leading from midfield, and will be looking to protect the back four, formed by Roel Gener , Anton del Rosario, Rob Gier, and Ray Jonsson . The Azkals will be given more confidence at the back as Neil Etheridge is back standing between the posts and will be looking to add another to his clean sheet record. source : soccercentral.ph/news/boro-play-defensive-midfield

we'll park the van....you dont have to use a bus against a team that you're evenly matched with.
a van will do.

Doesn't having Etheridge in between the posts qualify as parking the bus I read somewhere about calling Etheridge as Neil "The SEA Bus" Etheridge ;D

Yung isang youtube video with Etheridge practicing, ang title something like that. "The Bus" daw siya. Pero nag-aargue yung mga commenters na hindi masyadong positive ang ibig sabihin daw nun. Hehe. On topic: YES! I was so happy to read that Coach Weiss will be utilizing a more defensive strategy No live match, but I'll breathe a little easier.

So far coach's Weiss record with the squad is W-D-D and no loss, 1-2-0 .

I still believe we should build on our strengths... and that is defensive, counter-attacking football. But each coach has his own philosophy and Weiss's philosophy is based on attack.
However, I applaud his pragmatism as demonstrated by his determination to defend well against Myanmar, which we did.
I believe that hard fought draw was a fair result.
--------To attack or not to attack, that is the question...
There's a quote from one of the best attack-minded coaches ever, Cesar Luis Menotti:
"I maintain that a team is above all an idea and more than an idea it is a commitment, and more than a commitment it is the clear convictions that a coach must transmit to his players to defend that idea. So my concern is that we coaches don't arrogate to ourselves the right to remove from the spectacle the synonym of festival, in favour of a philosophical reading that cannot be sustained, which is to avoid taking risks. And in football there are risks because the only way you can avoid taking risks in any game is by not playing …
"And to those who say that all that matters is winning, I want to warn them that someone always wins. Therefore, in a 30-team championship, there are 29 who must ask themselves: what did I leave at this club, what did I bring to my players, what possibility of growth did I give to my footballers?
"I start from the premise that football is efficacy. I play to win, as much or more than any egoist who thinks he's going to win by other means. I want to win the match. But I don't give in to tactical reasoning as the only way to win, rather I believe that efficacy is not divorced from beauty …"

It is hard to make a proper analysis of the game without watching it unfold. But so far Weiss has shown an ability to make game changing adjustments to the roster. Whatever he said during halftime seems to have fired up the team. His substitution of Araneta seems to have changed the dynamics of the team. Hopefully he can find somebody to replace Ian from the start.
