Ceres-Negros gains spot in second round of AFC Champions League qualifiers Ceres-Negros secured a place in the second round of the AFC Champions League preliminaries after defeating Myanmar’s Shan United 3-2 Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Senegalese striker Robert Lopez Mendy and Spaniard Bienvenido Maranon gave the Busmen a 2-0 lead in the first half before OJ Porteria scored an insurance goal late to hold off the Myanmar domestic league champions. The Philippines Football League and Copa Paulino Alcantara winners will face Thailand’s Port FC next week in Bangkok with the winner advancing to the playoff round opposite Japan’s Tokyo FC. It was Ceres’ sixth win in as many matches against Shan United in all continental competitions. Lopez Mendy put the Busmen in front five minutes after the opening whistle, scoring off a cross by Pika Minegishi into the middle of the box. Maranon, who scored 40 goals in all competitions last year, doubled the lead before halftime with help from a Porteria cross in the 41st for Ceres. Shan United pulled one back in the 73rd as Zin Min Tun struck a diving header, but Porteria responded six minutes later by finishing Mike Ott’s deflected attempt for a 3-1 Ceres lead. Djedje Maximin Djawa made things a bit interesting for Shan United with a goal three minutes before stoppage time but Ceres was able to hold on for the victory. sports.mb.com.ph/2020/01/15/ceres-negros-gains-spot-in-second-round-of-afc-champions-league-qualifiers/

Schrock game-winner vs Thais moves Ceres on brink of AFC Champions League spot STEPHAN Schrock knocked in the game-winner as Ceres Negros FC beat Port FC, 1-0, on Tuesday night at the PAT Stadium in Bangkok to move one victory away from claiming a historic AFC Champions League spot. With the win, the Busmen goes to the third and final match of the preliminary stage against FC Tokyo next week with a chance to become the first Philippine club to secure a place in the group stage of the AFC Champions League. Schrock scored on a cross in the 51st minute, the ball finding its way to the back of the net after Port FC goalkeeper Worawut Srisupa failed to knock the ball away. The Busmen also endured anxious moments as Port FC desperately sought a game-tying goal before coming away with their second win of the preliminaries. Takashi Odawara also had a fine effort on defense for Ceres, particularly in the second half where he had a key stop on Port striker Sergio Gustavo Arteaga that preserved the one-goal lead. www.spin.ph/football/schrock-game-winner-vs-thais-moves-ceres-on-brink-of-afc-champions-league-spot-a795-20200121?ref=home_feed_1

Vidakovic proud of resilient Ceres Negros Bangkok: Ceres Negros head coach Risto Vidakovic hailed his players’ professionalism as the club from the Philippines booked their place in the Playoff round of the 2020 AFC Champions League with victory over Thailand’s Port FC on Tuesday. Stephan Schrock claimed the only goal of the game when the midfielder’s ball into the penalty area six minutes into the second half was punched over his own line by Port FC goalkeeper Worawut Srisupa and Ceres will now take on Japan’s FC Tokyo for a place in the group phase of this year’s competition. “I think it’s very important for the boys to believe in what we do,” said Vidakovic. “They proved today that they are really professionals, especially tactically. “It’s very difficult to follow the plan when you’re legs are not responding. It’s very hard sometimes, but we’re conscious that we’re just in our second week of training and it’s too early for us. “I think we moved very well, we covered each other and we helped each other on the pitch and now we have to follow this up.” Ceres were outplayed for significant periods of the match by the home side, but with Port FC unable to make the most of their chances – especially as they chased an equaliser in the final 30 minutes of the game – the Filipinos booked their place in the next phase of the competition. The club is returning to the playoffs two years after previously reaching the same round, where they were eliminated by Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian and Vidakovic knows his side face another major challenge against a club that finished as runners-up in last year’s J.League. “It’s going to be another hard game, even harder than this one,” he said. “It’s an experience for the team. “We are always fighting to win, we are tactically working on that but we also have to be realistic and sometimes it’s very hard, especially for the ASEAN countries. “It’s not easy to qualify because you play one game outside against very strong opponents whose budget is maybe seven times higher but for us it’s an experience and we’re going there to compete.” Schrock was delighted with his team’s performance and warned Ceres should not be written off ahead of next week’s game at Tokyo Stadium. “We are very happy and very proud of what we’ve done today,” he said. "It’s not only the goal, it's the way we helped each other. “The legs were gone after 60 or 70 minutes for most of us, but we can be proud of that. We are always capable of producing an upset. We worked for this and we believed in this and congratulations to our team." www.the-afc.com/competitions/afc-champions-league/latest/news/vidakovic-proud-of-resilient-ceres-negros

Looks like Schrock might not be available for Ceres in the next game though because of the accumulation of yellow cards.

Ceres faces daunting task without Schrock vs FC Tokyo for Champions League spot The Busmen will play in the last preliminary stage match against FC Tokyo following two victories, the previous one, a 1-0 win over Port FC last week. Stephan Schrock knocked in the lone goal of the match in the 51st minute. “It’s a big honor to play such a big club. For us, it’s a big bonus to be here. They did something that nobody expected. We beat one big club from Thailand and now, we are here. It’s a good challenge playing FC Tokyo,” said Ceres-Negros FC coach Risto Vidakovic. Vidakovic admitted it will be a tough task to beat FC Tokyo, the second-placers in the J1 League. Schrock will also be missing Tuesday’s match due to accumulated yellow cards including one against Port FC. “We are big underdogs,” Vidakovic said. “We are motivated just to play. It’s a big honor to be here. We have nothing to lose. They are strong, their budget has a big difference. We have to enjoy the atmosphere and play the game.” www.spin.ph/football/ceres-negros-fc-vs-fc-tokyo-afc-champions-league-stephan-schrock-a795-20200127?ref=home_feed_1

MANILA, PHILIPPINES
United City FC will meet J1 League champion Kawasaki Frontale and Chinese Super League runner-up Guangzhou in its first AFC Champions League group stage stint
Reigning Philippines Football League (PFL) champion United City FC is in for a daunting AFC Champions League debut as it faces Asia's top football clubs.
Southeast Asia's top football club is bunched together with 2020 J1 League champion Kawasaki Frontale and 2020 Chinese Super League runner-up Guangzhou Evergrande in Group I of Asia's top flight club tournament.
Kawasaki, which recently copped its maiden Emperor's Cup title over Gamba Osaka at the start of the year, is led by Japan 2018 World Cup midfielder Ryota Oshima and young guns Kaoru Mitoma and Ao Tanaka.
Since manager Toru Oniki took over as head coach in 2017, he has led the club then-known as Japan football's "silver collector" to 3 top flight league titles, as well as one title each from the Levain Cup (2019), Super Cup (2019) and Emperor’s Cup (2020).
Guangzhou, on the other hand, has been a powerhouse in the Chinese Super League thanks to the lineage of foreign managers that were at helm since 2010.
Before assuming the head coach post for the China national football team in 2016, Italian Marcello Lippi led Guangzhou to the 2013 AFC Champions League title and a four-peat in the Super League.
Brazilian Luis Felipe Scolari made the most impact with a Champions League title right in his first year managing the team in 2015 and 6 major local football titles.
Current coach Fabio Cannavaro took over the club after Lippi for a year in the 2014-2015 season, and returned to top managerial post in 2017.
But the Italian has only won 2 Super League titles and the 2018 Chinese FA Super Cup trophy with the team.
The South China Tigers are reinforced by Brazilian midfielder Paulinho, who is listed as their third captain.
Paulinho, formerly part of Tottenham and Barcelona, was vital in Brazil's 2018 World Cup stint as he scored in the country's 2-0 win over Serbia to seal a berth in the knockout stages.
PFL runner-up Kaya-Iloilo, on the other hand, is drawn together in the ASEAN Zone's Group I with Myanmar's Shan United or Ayeyawady United, Terengganu FC of Malaysia, and Geylang International FC of Singapore.
On Tuesday, January 26, AFC announced that both the Champions League and the cup tournament will played in centralized venues, which have not been decided on.
United City FC will see action from April 21 to May 7, while Kaya-Iloilo will kick off their campaign on June 22 to 28. – Rappler.com

Kaya FC-Iloilo nips Shanghai Port to reach AFC Champions League KAYA FC-Iloilo reached its greatest achievement in the 25-year history of the club, as it booked a seat in the AFC Champions League with a 1-0 win over Shanghai Port on Wednesday at the Pathum Thani Stadium in Bangkok. Audie Menzi scored the lone goal of the match, enough to seal a place in the AFC Champions League and give the club its biggest win since its inception in 1996. The win marked a landmark event for football in the country as Kaya FC joins reigning domestic league champion United City in the first year of Philippine representation in the expanded AFC Champions League competition. Kaya FC is now moving on to the group stage where it will face Thailand champion BG Pathum United on Friday still in Bangkok under a centralized set-up or bubble. The Philippine club will also be facing Viettel FC on Tuesday, and AFC Champions League reigning titlist Ulsan Hyundai FC on July 2. Despite the absence of broadcast arrangements for the match, the victory resonated among the Filipino football fans who followed the match via Kaya’s social media accounts. Menzi scored on a header in the 17th minute, before Kaya’s defense led by goalkeeper Louie Casas held on to force a clean sheet against the Chinese squad who came in as the favorites to win the match. Kaya came in to the match with new additions including head coach Graham Harvey and Jarvey Gayoso, who was fresh from his stint with the Philippine Azkals in the World Cup and Asia Cup qualifiers. Kaya FC only needed a victory to advance after its first round opponent Brisbane Roar withdrew from the competition. www.spin.ph/football/kaya-f...pions-league-a795-20210624?ref=article_feed_1However Shanghai Port did not bring most of their first team players probably because of COVID restrictions. This means though that the Philippines will have 2 representatives(United City FC and Kaya FC) in the newly expanded AFC Champion's League group stage for the first time.

United City settles draw in ACL after conceding second-half goal UNITED City FC conceded a goal in the second half to settle for a 1-1 draw against Beijing FC in its 2021 AFC Champions League opener at the Bunyodkor Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Stephan Schrock scored in the 28th minute, but Beijing FC found an equalizer with Liang Shaowen converting a lovely free kick in the 73rd to salvage a point in their AFC Champions League campaign. UCFC settled for a point, but could have easily been a historic win for Philippine football. Schrock, who was coming off a stint with the Philippine Azkals in the World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers in Sharjah, shot from the left side of the box to the top corner as United City grabbed the upper hand early. Beijing FC equalizer For the most part, United City also controlled the match even until Beijing FC won a free kick after a foul by Jung Da-Hwon. Liang’s shot to the top left corner over United City goalkeeper Anthony Pinthus tied the match as a result of the foul. United City still had chances, the closest at added time when substitute Mark Hartmann hit the crossbar from outside the box. Despite missing out on the win, it was still an auspicious start for United City, which got an outright berth in the ACL for winning the Philippines Football League crown last year. www.spin.ph/football/united-city-fc-settles-draw-in-acl-after-conceding-second-half-goal-a795-20210627?ref=article_feed_1
