Sy group requested to make bigger sports arenaby Eileen A. Mencias SENATOR Juan Miguel Zubiri yesterday told reporters that the government is talking to the Sy Group of Companies to enlarge the closed indoor stadium it is planning to construct near the Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City in preparation for the country’s hosting of the Suzuki Cup in 2012. The Suzuki Cup is a biennial football competition organized by the Asean Football Federation. Last year, the Philippine team, known as the Azkals, made a good showing in the tournament, increasing interest in the sport in the country. Zubiri said they are asking the Sy group to increase the size of its planned indoor stadium so that it can accommodate a football field and 30,000 to 40,000 spectators. The senator said the country needs to spend at least P400 million to improve the Panaad stadium in Negros Occidental and the Rizal stadium to meet international standards and allow the country to host the Suzuki Cup. He said they are already talking to a businessman who he declined to identify to sponsor the repairs for the Panaad stadium but the sponsorship rests on changing the name of the stadium to the name of the corporate sponsor. Are they aware that we are not even hosting the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup? It will be in Thailand and Malaysia, unless the Azkals make it in the playoff stage again...

Hindi ba may naipasa nang batas sa kongreso tungkol sa isang stadium na mga 50,000 ang capacity?
Wala akong alam sa mga batas, pero hindi yun "build a stadium" law... "plan to build a stadium" lang ata yun.

I think they should just make provisions for the capacity of the field to be expanded, right now we can't even fully fill up Rizal, from a business point of view it might not be practical to build such a big stadium, who will watch when the Azkals are not playing?
Aside from the grassroots development, we should try to develop a fanbase for the sport.
For example, you can set up a basketball court anywhere, any man on the street can play basketball. But football? Who's he gonna play with? He probably knows Phil Younghusband, but he probably doesn't know the rules or know how to play football, that's because the sport is inaccessible to him.
My theory is: more people who play equals a bigger possible fanbase and thus the eventual need for bigger stadiums.
If Rizal gets filled even if the Azkals are not playing, that's when we know we're making more progress (but as it is, thank God for the Azkals!)

I thought basketball arena yung tinatayo sa tabi ng MOA. At matatapos na raw yun in time for 2012 UAAP and NCAA season. I don't think kakagatin ng mga Sy yung mga proposed adjustments sa arena na tinatayo. Reason is baka dahil sa mga adjustments na yun, hindi na dun maglaro for this year ang UAAP at NCAA basketball, which is a big loss for them. Also, not many watches football games live at the venue. Except for the recent UFL Cup finals, hindi masyado napuno yung Rizal Football Stadium grandstand.
Also, hindi Philippines magho-host ng Suzuki Cup. Well unless maka-abot ulit sa semis.

HOW YOU CAN FILLED RIZAL IF THE TICKET PRICE IS 3,000-15000 PESOS....WE ARE NOT A FOOTBALL CRAZY NATION BUT IF THEY BUILD A 50,000 SITTER STADIUM AND REDUCE TICKET PRICE TO 50-1000 PESOS...EXPECT A FILLED RIZAL STADIUM......

Also, hindi Philippines magho-host ng Suzuki Cup. Well unless maka-abot ulit sa semis. Its true, but I was thinking. Were facing the defending champions Malaysia this Feb, and If we beat them, How about build us a new Arena then? (Because I think beating the defending champions will justify the chances of the Azkals making the Semis next Suzuki cup)
