Calisto quits as Vietnam coachHANOI—Henrique Calisto has resigned as coach of football-mad Vietnam, blaming media pressure on his team's failure at last year's Southeast Asia cup. The Vietnam Football Federation on Wednesday accepted the Portuguese's letter of resignation, said its deputy chairman Nguyen Lan Trung. Calisto, 58, is reportedly set to move to Thailand to coach Muang Thong United, leaving behind a country where the national team has often struggled to meet the high hopes of its passionate fans. "He set forth several reasons for the resignation, but the main reason was media pressure against him and the team. He thought it's not good for the young players and his exit will be better for the national team," Trung told AFP. Calisto became Vietnam coach for the second time in 2008, when his team won the ASEAN Cup, which brings together Southeast Asian nations every two years. He first held the position in 2002 and spent several years after that coaching provincial teams. Vietnam lost their ASEAN crown in December when they were beaten by Malaysia in the semi-finals in a lacklustre performance that sparked disappointment among fans and media. Calisto could not be reached for comment, but according to the Tuoi Tre newspaper, he said he had received no respect despite his 11 years in Vietnamese football. "I experienced much bitterness and difficulty in my football career in Vietnam, but also enjoyed many successes with clubs and the national team. I think this is the right time to say goodbye to Vietnamese football," it quoted him as saying. "I will become the coach for Thailand's Muang Thong United," he added.

McMenemy to coach Vietnam eleven?HENRIQUE Calisto, the coach of Vietnam’s football team when the Philippine Azkals stunned the Vietnamese, 2-0, during last year’s Suzuki Cup, has quit his post two years before his contract officially ends. But instead of heaving a sigh of relief, Azkals team manager Dan Palami cautioned his team from thinking that the Vietnamese will be easy picking when the nationals face them again next year. “We should not look at it as a weakness on their (Vietnam) part. This might even make them stronger,” said Palami in an interview with Manila Standard. Palami said he learned of Callisto’s resignation from former Azkals’ coach Simon McMenemy, who, in turn, was informed of this development through Callisto’s Twitter account. McMenemy, who was replaced by Hans Michael Weiss of Germany as Philippine coach because he does not own a license to coach in the Asian Football Confederation, said Calisto, a Portuguese, will be moving to Thailand to coach Muang Thong United, a professional football team. The 58-year-old Calisto refused to shake hands with then Azkals coach McMenemy when the defending champion Vietnam lost to the Philippines. Callisto’s contract with Vietnam was supposed to end on 2013, but he reportedly decided to quit after Vietnamese soccer officials and coaches criticized him heavily when the Vietnamese lost to the Azkals. “I and my players tried our best, but for many reasons, the team was not successful. But except for the VFF, others didn’t sympathize with me. They criticized and shifted responsibility onto me. I’ve been with Vietnam for more than 10 years and our team won the Southeast Asian championship but after one failure, everyone turns their back on me. That pressure is terrible and I would like to resign,” Calisto said in a published statement. In a related development, McMenemy said Vietnam has offered him a job with its national football team, and added that he may end up either as a team manager or coach of the team. Meanwhile, Suzuki Philippines gave P3.2 million in financial assistance to the Philippine Football Federation to be used specifically for the staging of a national under-23 tournament set to start later this month. The deal was forged Thursday following talks between Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta Jr. and Suzuki Philippines president Satoshi Uchida. In a related development, the PFF has hired Uruguyan-Spanish coach Maor Rozen to handle the national under-19 team which will see action in AFF Championships in Myanmar in September, with Charlie Cojuangco acting as team manager.

The U-20 team was the last coaching position open in the PFF since we are not forming a U-17 to participate in the U-17 AFC qualifiiers. Since Rozen was chosen to fill that position, and Weiss will coach both the men's and U-23 teams, McMenemy is definitely out of the picture here even if he doesn't get the Vietnam coaching position.

Azkals win on 3-2 aggregate score, advance to meet MyanmarThe stingy Azkals defense came into play in the second half as they denied Mongolia any more goals to seal their advance in this pre-qualifying round where they go up against Myanmar next on March 21. At the end of the first half, the Azkals trailed Mongolia's Blue Wolves 1-2 in the 2nd leg of their 2012 AFC Challenge Cup pre-qualifying match in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Despite the freezing temperature, the Azkals - came out smoking as James Younghusband scored at the three-minute mark but the Blue Wolves equalized right back with a goal from Donorov Lumbengarav at the 22nd minute. The Blue Wolves drew their 2nd goal at the 33rd minute when keeper Ed Sacapaño blocked a free kick but Mongolia's Bayasgalan scored on the follow-up.
