Philippines reaches the semifinals after beating Chinese Taipei 75-68.
Ugly win with a lot of missed shots in the first half, but a win nevertheless.

Thanks for the livestream dingodile. I used sportslemon but I ended up falling asleep in the middle of the game because of the time difference here in the US. We always have problems with tall teams like Iran. Hopefully they can obtain better players from the PBA when the Asian championships come around next year in order to improve their chances of advancing to the FIBA World Championships. The other clubs in the PBA need to show a little bit of patriotism and be more cooperative.

Something we could be proud of Philippines to host 2013 FIBA Asia ChampionshipInterAKTV · Thursday, January 10, 2013 · 9:34 pm The Philippines won the rights to host the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship set on August 1 to 13. No less than Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manuel V. Pangilinan made the announcement in a text message circulated Thursday evening. (InterAKTV is part of InterAksyon.com, the news site of TV5, which is chaired by Pangilinan.) FIBA Asia had earlier awarded hosting rights to the event to Lebanon, but tensions in the region forced the regional cage body to look for other options. “Unfortunately, the current situation in the region and the on-going civil war in Syria, which has its indirect effect on the countries in the whole of West Asia, especially on Lebanon, creates doubts about the stability that we might not have, at least, till the fixed dates of our event,” FIBA Asia secretary-general Hagop Khajirian told the FIBA Asia website. “In view of these facts, FIBA Asia Executive Committee decided to change the venue of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship from Beirut-Lebanon to Manila-Philippines.” Last September, Pangilinan led a delegation of SBP officials to make a comprehensive presentation before the FIBA Asia board in Japan to convince the Philippines’ fitness to host the tournament. The cage body, however, decided to go with Lebanon, but noted the Philippines would be next in line should the original choice prove to be unfit. The FIBA Asia Championship serves as qualifier for the 2014 FIBA World Cup. The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team coached by Chot Reyes will represent the country in the competition. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/philippines-to-host-2013-fiba-asia-championship
P.S. - To SMC, RELEASE YOUR PLAYERS! This is an opportunity to showcase PHI Basketball
- Will Nico Salva (the fan XD) play? Probably NOT ;D
- The FIBA Asia Championship is a qualification for 2014 FIBA World Championship to be held in Spain. 3 slots for Asia are up for grabs.
Don't miss the opportunity FIBA has inherited the name "World Cup" from FIFA. The next FIBA World Cup will be held 5 years later, in 2019, to reset the cycle on a different year than the FIFA World Cup. FIBA Asia Championship is a qualifier for the World Cup and the Olympics but on an alternate basis.(edited for clarity --stellarboy)

I sort of expect this move by FIBA. The tensions in Syria and Palestine have imposed a safety threat to travellers and overseas workers there. The DFA have already issued evacuation orders to OFWs working in the area around Syria to avoid casualties.
Now that Manila hosts this event after such a long time, the national team has to set goals - to get to at least third place to gain qualification to the 2014 World Cup (I still prefer to call it the World Championship, though). Now the problem would be how to call up the players, especially from the SMC-led teams? I know there are still tensions and conflicts of interest between the SMC teams and the SBP.
As for Nico Salva, unfortunately, he's not yet drafted to the senior team pool. ;D

Since we are naturalizing foreignn players for the Gilas, why can't we naturalized players with Filipino blood? There should be some in the NBA, I heard Nate Robinson of the Chicago Bulls has supposedly Filipino blood?

^ I don't know about how Filipino Nate Robinson is (aside from the fact na nahuli siyang umihi sa kalye lol). From what I remember, he is only 1/8 Filipino, as one of his great-grandparents is pure Filipino. Not sure if he qualifies as a natural-born Filipino under PH constitution. If not, then I don't think it would be a good idea to naturalize him. Only one slot for naturalized players is allowed per team, and I don't think it's nice to use it on a small guy (he is 5'8'') as the weakness of our team is at the center position. JaVale McGee is open to the idea of being naturalized Filipino. If that doesn't happen, then we still have Marcus Douthit.
Maybe you have heard the rumours that DeMarcus Cousins is part Filipino. And Greg Oden too. Not yet proven though.

There should be some in the NBA, I heard Nate Robinson of the Chicago Bulls has supposedly Filipino blood? we can only naturalize one player. the fil-foreigners in the basketball team are technically filipinos under the constitution. I heard Nate robinson's filipino ancestry is far enough that he doesnt fall into the similar category our fil-for players are in. in other words, he has to be naturalized like douthit. i think we should definitely naturalize centers only. thats gilas' weakest link.

SMART-Gilas drops second assignment to hometown Dubai clubInterAKTV · Sunday, January 13, 2013 The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team stumbled against a tough Al Ahli club and surrendered a 97-82 decision to absorb its first defeat in the 24th Dubai International Basketball Tournament Saturday night at the Al Ahli gym in the United Arab Emirates. The Philippine five simply had now answers for the three imports of Al Ahli, and the players’ lack of seasoning was exposed in the one-sided match. “The team’s immaturity showed tonight. We couldn’t handle playing versus the three ex-NBA vets,” coach Chot Reyes posted on his Twitter account. “That’s part of the learning process. Great experience for our guys.” American imports Leemire Goldwire and LeRoy Hurd led Al Ahli, runner-up in last year’s Dubai tournament, with 24 and 21 points, respectively, while 7-foot-1 center Cheikh Samb collected 18. With the win, Al Ahli now carded 1-1, also the same mark as SMART-Gilas. The host club lost to Sporting Amarex of Jordan, 67-64, in its first assignment. Garvo Lanete and Nino Canaleta led the Philippines with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while naturalized player Marcus Douthit was held to just nine. “Sorry for the loss. I should have been smarter and more of a leader. Never too old to learn,” Douthit wrote on his Twitter account. Douthit had 20 points and 10 rebounds in 79-77 victory against Mouttahed Tripoli of Lebanon. Ah Ahli, one of the top club teams in UAE, took an early 26-18 lead in the first period and went on to grab a 51-32 halftime advantage. Their lead reached to 21, 79-58, entering the final quarter. Smart Gilas 2 cut the lead to 14 but time was not on their side. The Philippines will take on Sporting Amarex on Monday in its final Group B battle in the preliminary stage. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/smart-gilas-drops-second-assignment-to-hometown-dubai-club
