National, local government support needed to stage FIBA Asia, says MVPInterAKTV · Friday, January 11, 2013 · 9:21 pm The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas would need all the help it can get to stage the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, according to president Manuel V. Pangilinan. The telecommunications mogul described staging the competition, which would include some 800 to 1,000 athletes and officials from 16 countries including the Philippines, as a “logistical nightmare.” The country being awarded the hosting rights only this week, after FIBA Asia decided to transfer the venue from Lebanon, which has been racked by regional tensions. The development leaves the Philippines with less time to organize the event “We need to hit the ground running,” said Pangilinan. (InterAKTV is part of InterAksyon.com, the news site of TV5, which is chaired by Pangilinan.) But several details are already in place for the event. The SM Mall of Asia Arena will serve as the main venue for the competition. Pangilinan said that either Cuneta Astrodome or Ninoy Aquino Stadium will be used as the secondary venue. “We may need to fix it, depending on our choice,” said the telecommunications mogul, who noted that the effort would go beyond a mere private undertaking. “This won’t be easy. We need cooperation from the national government and the local governments of Pasay and Manila,” said Pangilinan. “We have to prepare the hotels, buses, secretariat, interpreters, communication needs of the international media among others.” Pangilinan also revealed that FIBA Asia officials will be billeted at Sofitel, while the SBP is looking at Diamond Hotel for player accomodations. Referees will stay at another hotel. Pangilinan said FIBA Asia secretary-general Hagop Khajirian required a comprehensive media plan for the event. “That’s one of his conditions, to have a full coverage of the FIBA Asia from broadcast, print and internet,” said Pangilinan. The last time the country hosted the Asian Championship was in 1973, which the Philippines also won. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/national-local-government-support-needed-to-stage-fiba-asia-says-mvp

Smart move as top corporate backer's name dropped from Gilas PilipinasBy Snow Badua January 15, 2013, 04:29 pm PROOF that the hosts' campaign in the FIBA-Asia Men’s Basketball Championship is for national cause and above personal and marketing considerations, the Philippine cage team has dropped top corporate backer Smart Communications' name and henceforth is going to be simply known as Gilas Pilipinas. No less than Smart Communications and PLDT chairman Manny V. Pangilinan made the disclosure to Spin.ph on Sunday to drive home his call for unity among basketball stakeholders, team owners, and fans as a way of lending support to the national team in this worthy endeavor. Pangilinan, the chief backer of Gilas Pilipinas in his capacity as president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), said that for the August 1-11 international cage meet, the official jersey of the team will only bear the word `Pilipinas’ in front. The presence of the 'Smart' name in the national team has become a contentious issue both among owners and fans at a time when the SBP and the PBA are trying to get the pro teams' commitment to lend their players to Gilas for the event serving as the Asian qualifier for the 2014 world championships in Spain. “Yung uniform naman ng Philippine team in the tournament ang nakalagay lang dun`Pilipinas’ at `yung pangalan ng players sa likod,” explained Pangilinan. “Walang Smart na nakalagay dun. So others won’t have to worry about it.” PBA media bureau chief Willy Marcial confirmed that an understanding with SBP and the MVP Group had already been reached by the league regarding the sensitive matter. “Yes, nagkaka-intindihan na kami sa SBP at ng MVP group na yun na nga muna ang name… Gilas Pilipinas,” said the ever-accommodating Marcial. Pangilinan added that he welcomes other companies which are planning to sponsor the team in future tournaments. “If they want to sponsor certain events or even the Fiba-Asia, we are open,” said Pangilinan. “If they want to participate (and help out in the sponsorship), open kami. It helps reduce the burden on us.” The SBP chief and team owner of Talk `N Text was quick to write off suggestions from other fellow team owners such as Rain or Shine bosses Raymund Yu and Terry Que to put a small logo of teams which the nationals players are representing in the PBA, in their Gilas jerseys. “That’s a good idea, but Fiba won’t allow that. Just the name of the country, number, and the name of the player,” said Pangilinan, pointing to strict Fiba regulations on sponsorships. www.spin.ph/sports/basketball/news/smart-move-as-top-corporate-backers-name-dropped-from-gilas-pilipinas#.UPZHKkAZfA4.twitter

At the same time, Feng told the PSC that Shanghai Sharks, a Chinese club co-owned by Yao Ming, will push through with its planned visit to Manila in May.
“Chairman Richie Garcia will coordinate with the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) and the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) for exhibition matches against a PBA team and or the Gilas national team,” the PSC exec said. www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/01/19/13/rizal-rehab-gives-way-afc-elims

Accoridng to a horribly translated article posted by a former at interbasket.net, Taiwan will not invite the Philippines to this year's Jones Cup, which means we won't be able to defend our title (which would actually be a good thing for once).
Their government is also calling for a boycott on Philippine-hosted sports events including the FIBA-Asia Championships.
Way to go and shoot yourselves Taiwan. Giving up too much because of blind patriotism, pride and inability to accept the fact that it was your compatriot's fault.

No Jones Cup for Gilas: Taiwan organizers withdraw invitation for Philippine team InterAKTV · Monday, May 27, 2013 · 7:28 pm
Amid tensions between the Philippines and Taiwan, the organizers of the Taipei- based William Jones Cup have withdrawn their invitation to the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, the defending champions of the competition. Philippine national men’s basketball coach Chot Reyes made the announcement on his Twitter account. Just got word from d organizers that we have been un-invited to d Jones Cup. Di matapos-tapos ang problema ng Gilas ha. — Chot Reyes (@coachot) May 27, 2013 The Philippines won the competition last year on the strength of the performance of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel guard LA Tenorio, who won Most Valuable Player honors. Tensions between Taiwan and the Philippines rose after the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman by members of the Philippine Coast Guard earlier this month. Several incidents of attacks on Filipino workers by Taiwanese locals have been reported. Gilas members expressed disappointment over the decision of Jones Cup organizers. No go on Jones Cup…was looking forward to defending our title. But praying some good comes out of this, on and off the court. — Gabe Norwood (@gnorwood5) May 27, 2013 Reyes, for his part, said that the development is a setback in the preparations of the national team, which is training to compete in the FIBA Asia Championship in Manila in August. We now have to find a replacement tournament as d Jones Cup is such an integral part of our preparation. — Chot Reyes (@coachot) May 27, 2013

The boys are now in Lithuania for an intensive work out and scrimmages with some top local clubs and with their U20 team. Bruiser Beau Belga can't seem to get his European Visa even with the endorsement from the Lithuanian consul here in manila.

Fearless forecast: 5th place. I'm not really optimistic with their chances against the Middle Eastern sides.
