I was wondering when somebody will come around to start a column on this subject. It is a popular theme on other forums. Here is the first edition started by JP Manahan of soccercentral. Good job JP.
Philippine Footballers Abroad - The Recap (August 1-7)
by John Paul Manahan on August 9, 2011
Stephan Schrock for Greuther Furth
This is a weekly post devoted to following up on all the overseas-based footballers who have played for the Philippines. Like what the title stated, this is a recap of games of a team that has a Filipino in the lineup. And again, for him to be included in the lineup, he has to have capped for the Philippines, or has been locked to play for us (as with the case of Dennis Cagara). So, if you are looking for David Alaba, Jonathan De Guzman and Alphonse Areola, you will not find him here (and in the case of Areola, not yet, anyway)
Neil Etheridge - Fulham
Fulham played in UEFA Europa League qualifying against RNK Split last Thursday, which they won 2-0. Neil was named as the backup keeper to Australian International Mark Schwarzer over newly signed Hungarian Csaba Somogyi, but did not play. Fulham is scheduled to play against FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the Europa League playoff round, which is a home-and-away competition scheduled on August 18 and 25. They also will be opening the 2011-12 Barclays Premier League season against Aston Villa at Craven Cottage this Saturday.
Rob Gier - Ascot United
The English FA just announced that the Hellenic League Premier Division club will be kicking off the 2011/12 FA Cup season on August 19 as the home team against fellow football pyramid minnows Wembley FC of the Combined Counties League. Their first league match will take place this Saturday against Abingdon Town. However, the club is coming into that game fresh from consecutive friendly defeats against Knaphill (last Tuesday) and Ashford Town FC (last Thursday). No information was available if Rob was included in the roster on both games.
Ray Jonsson - Grindavik
Grindavik played in two games this week, one on the road against Valur last Wednesday and one at home against Breidablik last Sunday. Both resulted in 1-1 draws. Ray named as a substitute on both games, but only came in on the Breidablik game, replacing Orri Freyr HjaltalÃn in the 76th minute. He has already played in eight games for the club, which is struggling at tenth on the Úrvalsdeild, or the Icelandic Premier League. They are, however, five points clear of the relegation zone.
Manny Ott - FC Ingolstadt II
The newly promoted side this past Saturday just lost their debut match in the Regionalliga Süd this season, losing 3-0 to Waldhof Mannheim. However, the midfielder was not included in the lineup. The club is currently in the fourth tier of the German Football Pyramid. Their next match is scheduled for August 20 against Freiburg II.
Patrick Hinrichsen - SV Darmstadt 98 II
The midfielder was not included on the lineup that played in the first matchday of the Verbandsliga Hessen-Süd, losing 1-0 to SG Bruchköbel. The club is currently in the sixth tier of the German Football Pyramid.
Stephan Schröck - SpVgg Greuther Fürth
Stephan started in their 1-0 win over Dynamo Dresden this past Saturday, making an impact with three goal scoring attempts and assisting on four more, albeit unsuccessfully. He played for 84 minutes before Christian Rahn replaced him to finish the match. They are currently tied for fourth in the second division of the Bundesliga, one point behind the leaders after Matchday 3, and they are scheduled to face Paderborn this Saturday. You can see the highlights from this match in the clip below:
Jerry Lucena - AGF
One half of the Fil-Danes was in list of substitutes in AGF's 3-1 loss to SønderjyskE in the Danish Superliga. Unfortunately, he remained on the bench for the full game. He did play the full 90 in the game before that, a 2-2 draw against OB. The club is currently mired in the bottom half of the league with four points after four matches.
Dennis Cagara - Lyngby
The other half of the Fil-Danes only played 31 minutes in Lyngby's 2-1 loss to Midtjylland last Sunday. He sustained a thigh injury that necessitated a substitution to prevent further aggravation. Dennis also indicated that he is also seeking alternative treatment and hopes to be ready for the next game, which is this Sunday against Horsens. The club is currently in the relegation zone at eleventh with three points. (Note: link is in Danish, so kindly have your translator handy)
Paul Mulders - ADO Den Haag
Paul was named as a substitute on both games that the Dutch club played this week, a 1-0 UEFA Europa League qualifier win against Omonia Nicosia last Thursday and a scoreless draw against Vitesse this past Sunday to kick off the 2011/12 Eredivisie. He came in to replace Ahmed Amni in the 32nd minute against the Cypriot club and in the 69th minute for Charlton Vicento on the other game. Unfortunately, the win was as far as they can go in Europe, as they lost 3-1 on aggregate. They will next face Groningen this Sunday.
