A rare Rob Gier pic in Ascot United kit Less than a middling team, is how one can describe Rob Gier's Ascot United last season. It survived a bad campaign season and is ready to begin climbing the table for the 2012/13 season. It is important to note that Rob was away from the team for more than half a season either from supporting the Azkals in its FIFA friendly games, the AFC Challenge Cup campaign where he effectively was the Captain of the team and led the Philippines to its highest ever major tournament results(a 3rd place finish as an underdog team all the way), or because of injury, suffered in the Los Angeles Galaxy vs Azkals exhibition game. "Rob was to this team what Aly Borromeo was to the 2010 squad -- steady in the back, solid in his defense, and the rightful team captain of this squad. He is and was easily the most consistent player for the group stages. I'd like to say that maybe one day, Rob Gier would be the perfect coach for the Philippine Men's Football National Team. He understands the team's needs, composition, and problems. He's got the tactical nous and is a solid motivator. It is a plus that he has his head screwed on right. Furthermore, everyone on the team respects him and that isn't hard to come by. I know Robbo would not encourage these talks as he has his own concerns back in England but I am just saying this. Who knows? Maybe one day." bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/2012/12/choosing-azkals-best-performer-in-group.htmlI have read that Rob has been spending his time watching opponents videos and sending copies of this to his teammates giving observations on opposing players and team strategies. He has also done a fine job of motivating our team and has helped organized the defence that has been the difference in this competition. He is one of the reasons our team is so united and focused on the goal of winning this competition. His time is running out as a player and he definitely wants to experience as much success as possible in the time left. He is such a natural leader with an exceptional work ethic and motivational skills that I think he will make a fine coach someday possibly even with the national team if he put his mind to it.

He has the charisma to get your attention and communicates you what he needs from you without being demanding and bossy... excellent set of character there, i should say.

takernz: You can be a playing coach in football. Chris Greatwich is an example during his time in the US. I heard Rob will play non-league football in England after the January transfer window. I don't even think he is considering for the UFL because of his family and business duties there. Is he heading for retirement?

I just hope when international players like Gier when they retire from Philippines, PFF should make tributes and recognition to these players who sacrificed a lot contributing strides in Philippine football without monetary returns.... I believed Ray Jonsson who was among the first Fil-foreign Azkal to volunteer to play for Philippines... He seemed to be retired from international football and I am hoping he was not dropped like a potato....

Skipper Rob Gier hints at international retirement following another Azkals AFF Cup semis exit From: Karlo Sacamos December 13, 2014, 05:15 pm ANOTHER Azkals skipper could be retiring from international play. After former captain Chieffy Caligdong retired from national duty last month, successor Rob Gier has hinted at retirement — at least in the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup — following a third straight stint in the biennial tournament. “I never say never, but it’s two years down the line,” said the veteran center-back, who turns 34 next month. “I’m not announcing anything yet, but I think it’s probably unlikely that I’ll play a Suzuki Cup again.” He did not see action in the first group stage match against Laos, but Gier came in as a sub for the injured Juani Guirado against Indonesia, before starting against Vietnam and in the two semifinal meetings against Thailand. “I think it’s about time to let some of the younger lads have a go at this tournament,” said the Filipino-British Gier, who has represented the country since 2009. Gier believes 19-year-old backline partner Amani Aguinaldo can fill the void, and fellow teenage defender in left-back Daisuke Sato can learn from their latest setback. “We’ve got a lot of youngsters. Hopefully these experiences will be good for them,” Gier said. “Amani and Sato can potentially have another five Suzuki Cups to learn from and get that elusive victory.” For now, he just wants to forget about football as he returns to his native England and spend the holiday season with his family. “I don’t want to think about 2015 yet. I just want to go home, see my babies and enjoy Christmas.” Read more at: www.spin.ph/football/azkals/news/azkals-skipper-rob-gier-hints-retirement-international-playFollow Us: @spinph on Twitter | spin.philippines on Facebook

Sana umabot man lang sya sa 100th cap. He's in 63 caps at the moment, maliit nalang ang kulang. Also, to PFF make it special naman. If someone retires in a national team. Make a memorable video highlights of that player. Yung kay chieffy kasi, he just received a "small, teeny tiny" award na parang pang "best employee of the month" lang. Have a trophy, na ma appreciate naman nung player before he retires.
